Somedays you're the windshield, other days...

Well, here's what happened at my house today.

Yeah, thats hail - - a little larger than a quarter and it poured hail for about ten minutes. And here's what happened to my daylilies...

This happened about 3 PM, so the day wasn't a total loss. However, I lost a lot of unbloomed buds and quite a few scapes too. That's the part that makes me sad. However, we really needed the 'rain.' By the way, that was a Wild Irish X Larry Allen Miller seedling. No "Oh gosh, poor you" postings please. Most, if not all, of these plants will be OK, and if there is no rebloom, I'll just have to wait until next year to see them bloom again. You have to expect this every now and then if you live in the South, and I haven't see hail like this in my yard for nearly 20 years. Just wanted to let some of you who have only heard about this kind of weather see what it can do to your daylilies.

On the positive side, we did NOT have a tornado anywhere nearby although watches and even a warning were called, so that's good news!

Being a southern gal, I've seen this a number of times myself Larry. Sometimes Mother Nature just throws you a curve ball, doesn't she? :)
Anyway, love that seedling. It's a real beauty, and I just love those edged reds anyway!!
Glad you didn't have any tornados, and glad you at least got some much needed rain.

wow,it sure tore up that beautiful daylily.It sure is (was) a gorgeous bloom.But,I am very glad you didn't get any tornados there. We had weather like that a few weeks ago,but the hail wasn't that big.It was pea size here and only lasted a few minutes.This weather has been crazy this year here.We got 2 amd 1/2 inches of rain in this last storm which we needed.We didn't need the wind that came with it,knocked power out for close to 5 hrs here,and my friend lost power for about 3 days.

Diana, we weren't sure about the rust on the window sashes, that is why we tried it as you see in the picture above. After seeing it, we decided that it looked great and gave just that "little extra" that we were trying for. Eduarda, yup......."grandma green". It was a color we both loved, so decided to switch it from trim to main color on both the house and garage. When we are done there will be no more pink. Thanks to everyone who said they liked the color combo. It was a real struggle to find colors we like and that also were historical as well. One of our goals with the garage when planning it was to build a garage/carriage house that fit the period of our home. I think/hope we have succeeded. There will be a 2-story, 8x16 porch built off the left side of the garage where you can see the beam built into the side. We will incorporate porch columns, railings and trim to match our other 4 porches on the house. This is how it looks now, after a day of painting last week.

Janice, That sure does look inviting! Your yard gets more beautiful with every post. I am still around though when I do get to sit it takes so long to catch up on all that has happened since I last caught up that there is no time to post.....lol.....But I do check up on the forum and read about everyone's goings on and enjoy the pics. I am glad to see all of the new faces and have been enjoying reading about and in our own way getting to know them. One of these days I would sure love to come sit a spell and drink a nice hot cup of coffee while gazing at all of the beauty around me. Take care...... Art

That's a beautiful cake, Tracey! I can't cook when I'm bored because about the only time I get bored is at work, and that's not often, but is usually this time of year and in the heat of the summer. That being said, I can't say if I cook when I'm bored or not, cause I'm not sure if that's what leads me to decide to cook or bake something or not. Frequently, I'll start cleaning the kitchen, I mean, really cleaning the kitchen, then, with it so nice and clean, I get motivated to mess it up again, and out comes the cookbooks, flour, sugar and other ingredients for baking. It never fails. And it never fails to really mess up the kitchen, either, lol! Than I have to start all over again. Is that because I'm bored, or in the mood to be busy? I think more the latter. I live in my forever house - someday. We had similar issues. Location: it's in a mixed building age area - my house is the oldest in the neighborhood 1884 Victorian farmhouse, my neighbors all have smaller late 1940's-70's ranches. Good thing is it's not a cookie cutter neighborhood. Bad thing: there are areas within a mile or so away that are a lot less nice; a big block of low rent apartments, and across the golf course there's a much more modest neighborhood with many more crime issues. Good news: We seldom have any problems; we were broken into once about 11yrs ago, one of several homes that summer, but once they caught the teen, no more until my new neighbor moved in last year - someone broke in and cleaned out the house while they were on vacation. But we're reorganizing the neighborhood watch, and everyone knows everyone, so overall it's a good place. House: It was both a dream and a nightmare when we bought it. Large rooms, lots of charm, great windows, large lot. But we had one previous home owner who stuccoed over the brick exterior, and another scary homeowner who divided the house into a duplex. Lots of work. Wayyyy more work than we first thought. Bad: stuff like two days ago, while I've been busy getting bids on painting and a few other things we wanted to do this Spring, a hunk of stucco fell off a column for the portico. We had suspected a problem for a while, but hoped it would wait. Decided to see what was going on, tore off the stucco, found the original Victorian porch post underneath (YEAH!) but it's rotted and need immediate replacement, so guess what just moved to the top of the project list? So much for my new mill work! My advice is, know what you're getting into. Check out the crime reports for the area with the local police. Drive around at all hours to see what happens in the area. Talk to the neighbors. Get a super picky home inspector. Plan on things taking 3 times longer to fix than you expect. Watch This Old House so often you feel like you're on a first name basis with Norm and Tom. Have or develop good DIY skills or the house and the contractors will eat you alive. That flower is heavenly. They used to call that color "American Beauty Rose." I have never seen a daylily flower that shape. We had our first rain yesterday in at least six weeks. Five minutes of good rain. I was working in the garden, and the rain was so great, I kept on working. Today we had 3 minutes of very heavy rain where I work, none at my home 8 miles away. sorry about your blooms and buds. But when the hail melts the nitrogen is good for the soil.

Larry, I feel ya... ever since we moved to Texas, I've been saying ... wierd weather we have here! (Mostly when the sky turns green and the sirens go off). I've been thinking of engineering a hem hail helmet. :o)

Larry, I admire your positive outlook. I'll try to follow suit.....the hail looks sort of pretty on your lawn - like snow. But hopefully, it will be another 20 years before you get to enjoy it again.

Larry I'm in Texas and this kind of weather is normal for us but thankfully the hail has pretty much missed my house so far this year, knock on wood. By the way your seedling is GORGEOUS!!! And I'm not much of a red person. I do love Wild Irish though and am using it's pollen everywhere. Good luck.

Larry, you sort of have to be accepting of Mother Nature don't you? Last year I had 150 pots of Oriental and Asiatic lilies in full bud ready for sale at the Farmer's Market. Didn't get home from work in time to do anything with them so they got bombarded with the same size hail you got. Snapped them off at the bud and even snapped some of them off half way up the stalk. It's real hard to sell something that looks like it's been through a leaf shredder. Fortunately the daylily field was 8 miles away and didn't get hit. It's sure hard to sell daylilies out of the field when there aren't any blooms!

Regardless, I was thanking God the tornado missed us that day and I'm sure you were doing the same!

Larry, I too know how you feel. The same thing happen to me last year.We just have to move on and wait for some reblooms.Some of my seedlings are now 5 or6 fans and this will be the first year that i get to see them.

You have my sympathies. This happened to me only a couple of weeks ago. Didn't hurt my Daylilies (no scapes yet) but my hosta were beat up.
