How do I attach a vine?

I bought a carolina jasmine and I would like to have it grow on my front porch near the roof line but I'm not sure how to start training it to go where I want it to and how to attach it once it gets up there. Any ideas? I would either like to train it to grow where i've placed the red or blue line on the pic i've included. The red spot on the bottom is where i've planted the jasmine. This is an old picture though so that large bush is no longer there and the jasmine is planted in the corner near that column. Thanks for any ideas.

I would use some smallish eye screws and stainless or galvanized wire.

Screw the eye screws at strategic places, in the corners and maybe one or two inbetween. Then run the wire through the eye screws and twist tie the wire at the end of the run.

You can start your jasmine up the column by planting a stake from the plant to the column, and using velcro plant ties. It comes on a roll, cost about $3.00, and you can tear it with your fingers. It is tough though, and you can re-use it for years. Also, it is a color green that blends beautifully with the plant, so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. When the jasmine gets to the column where it can climb to the top, it should be able to scramble up it without much help. Just use some velcro to help it, then you can move the velcro to another spot, or another plant. Once it gets to the top, where the wire is, train it horizontally. I would use more than one wire, as jasmine can get very heavy.

I have Carolina Jasmine entwined in a chain link fence, so the first thing I thought of was cutting a piece of fencing the width of the column (creating a trellis support) planting the Jasmine at the base and then just stand back and let the Jasmine do its thing. It won't take long for the Jasmine to twine through the fencing and cover it completely.

As the Jasmine climbs the column and starts to approach the roof line, you could cut another length of fencing and install in horizontally, coaxing it to grow horizontally by pruning.

Before installing the fencing you could paint it white to match your house. I think it would virtually disappear that way.

I'm not sure this plan would work, but it's just another option to consider.

Good Luck with your project. Those yellow blooms are going to look gorgeous against your house and because its evergreen, you will always have something pretty framing your house.

Since it is an aggressive twiner, you would need some heavy gauge wire that can be attached to the column and then along the overhang. You'd just need to keep guiding it to the wire and it should be able to do the rest. Just make sure that you remember to prune to keep it where you want it or it may engulf the porch and head for the roof! LOL

Susan....having the support bracket under only the back rod, how does that lend support to the front rod that has the draperies on it? I'm looking to hang blocking drapery on a slider and want the 2 panels stacked over the stationary side when not needed. It is a conundrum! I just planted a semi-dwarf trumpet vine next to a chain link fence. It grows to only 5 feet. It is attached to a small wooden trellis that came with the plant, so I will have to remove it at some point. Will this vine just attach itself to my fence on its own, or will it need to be tied to the fence somehow?

Choose a freestanding support, that holds itself up when built or installed correctly. One that could be used anywhere on your lot. In other words there is no way to make direct use of the fence without attaching something to it.

I don't have any experience with Jasmine, but if it's a heavy vine like Janie says, you might try attaching a length of pipe across the top beam. I used copper pipe, which is easy to cut with a pipe cutter tool and I found fittings that worked to screw into the wood cross beam. I used short lengths of pipe to hold it away from the beam a bit, so that the plant wasn't resting right against the wood. I have a wisteria growing on mine.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to buy stainless steel wire?

A boat chandelry might be a good bet. Not sure it that is something that Home Depot might offer....

High test fishing line will work equally as well, except for but the most vigorous of vines, like wisteria.
