pruning/cutting back out door figs in teh Northeast, when?

I have some trees that I did not cover left out and partially exposed this harsh winter. I sprayed them with wilt pruf in the fall and it appears that some of the branches are still greenish but other are partially orange/rust color which indicates that those branches are goners.

When should I cut back the rust branches down to the green section of the branch? is it to early to do it now? will I harm them if done now since the temps are still falling into the low 30s and sometimes upper 20 overnight?

I would wait until new growth starts. Even though I cover mine, there is some dieback every year. Careful of frost killing new leaves. I once found a fig in Orange NJ that died back to the ground, came back and produced that year.

Hi Taxus-man,

Isn't taxus Japanese Yew? That taxus sounds familiar somehow.

Did you get cuttings from that tree in Orange?

I grew up in East Orange and never saw a fig tree in all my young life and they were probably all around me and because I was told figs didn't grow that far North, I wasn't looking for them. Still, if I had see one, I'd have known what it was by the leaves.

I always wondered why there was an Orange, East Orange, West Orange and South Orange, but no North Orange... They were just all called, The Oranges, collectively.

Every 3 years, except the 1 italian unknown im trying i will have to look at in 2 years because the root system on that particular one was 3 seasons old an was really choking itself. That tree produced its first ripe fig last season and dropped all the others before they swelled and im thinking because the root system grew so fast and boound so bad that it hurt the production unlike the others which produce as usual. This season will tell me more if that was the case, i did have few choice words for it when i was root pruning it as one of the limbs smacked me very hard on my neck and the next thing i new i had a sorta red ring around the collar. Funny story about those fig trees, hope I donÂt get my legs broken :-) I had been watching those trees for a while. Finally pulled over to have a look. The sidewalk and chain link fence is right behind, up close to the trees, within arms length. The fence was covered with vegetation, I was standing right up to the fence having a good look at all the breba when all of a sudden his wife steps into view, we were eyeball to eyeball, couple of feet apart, startled both of us. The first thing she says to me in broken English is "You the Police?" The husband comes right over. He invites me in to have a look, I lift the camera to snap a pic and like on cue they both turn around. There definitely is a communication problem. He tells me itÂs a Mafia fig and then laughs a little. Says the first crop is better. I ask red or green he says blue. WouldnÂt give me a cutting then, tells me come back early next spring. Walks me outside the fence, stays till I drive away. That fall I was in the area, the trees were dormant, figured IÂd stop in. He refuses again, but gives me the EXACT date I could return next spring. IÂm already feeling a little uneasy about going back but on the specified day I return. He answers the door, one arm in a sling, bandage on his forehead, looks like something did a number on his face, recently. Could have been a fall, who knows? HeÂs a little agitated, tells me "go dig one out", they both watch me from the window the whole time. I would have loved to go back a few months later and try some of the breba. Needless to say, I wonÂt be going back again :-) Its in north jersey, about 12 miles as the crow flies due west from NYC. I think its just an unknown.

It does seem a bit difficult to get started with material other than the BT that local dedicated nurseries have or the potentially mis-marked varieties that Home Depot or Lowes might have. I have picked up what was marked as Kadota and Celeste. I will post pics next season when I successfully defend the fruit from the glutton squirrels. The figs on both trees were small and light colored. All my leaves have dropped but leaves of both are 3 lobed. The lobes of the "Kadota" were less defined that those of the "Celeste". The flesh of both figs was brownish rather than redish as best I could tell from the half-eaten fruits. One was lighter than the other but I can't remember which. A little background on what happened to my figs may be appropriate here. I had 2 small trees with 2 main stems from single trunks. There are a hand full of 6" long almost 1/4" diameter "branches" on them. There may have been 20 figs between the 2 trees. I looked at the trees everday as I am a type A nerd. One day when I went to look at the figs all but a few half eaten ones were gone. I have blamed the loss on squirrels but in all honesty I did not see squirrels eat the figs. Where I live we have many squirrels, opossums, raccoons and birds - who knows it may have been a conspiracy.... ;) Birds took many of my blueberries and blackberries also. I have come to terms with the loss and have decided that I will be building frames to hang nets from for next year. I'm considering using 3/4" PVC for the frams and building in watering functionality to the frame. mrhappy

We have an entire hill planted with heath and heather - probably about 40 or more, planted according to instructions. Some are (or should I say WERE, 6 years old. They all look dead as of this date, excluding just a few. Because this hill is a major landscape feature, I have begun digging them out, since they really look awful. I'm going to replant them in another spot that can serve as a 'recovery room', cut them back, and see what happens. Everywhere in our neighborhood we see dead heath and heather. The Dead Heather Society? (sorry). My sympathies to everyone who has lost their prized plants. I still hope for some new growth. Here is a link that might be useful: Garden Cape Cod

Yes, taxus is the Latin for yew. I lived in EO from 1954 to 1992. In the early days you could tell an Italian household by the wrapped fig tree in winter in the back yard. Things have changed. I brought my fig to OH when I moved here and have enjoyed many tasty figs. The section of Orange around Washington St from Day St to Main ST WO was called North Orange. Why is NJ like a tree? It has a Long Branch and 4 Oranges.-- Herman

Now my husband tells me he knew that area was called North Orange, but doesn't think it was a true city with N.O. in the address. And I thought he'd told me everything!!!

We both got a laugh out of the riddle. Thanks.

We have one Japanese Yew left in our front yard. It is the kind with the long, wide leaves and was here when we bought the house in May 1967 and the two yews were mature back then. When we added a double carport to our house, they took out the one on the right side of the house front, but I wouldn't let them take out the one on the left because there was no reason to do so. The house was built in the 1950s and the yews were probably the builders' choice of plants at the time because they are all over the subdivision. They just won't give up living and have the spirit of the fig tree, IMO. I'll have to let the yew know how much I value it when I'm outside tomorrow. Looks like my yew is an elder..... ;)
