OT - Iris - Lupine pics

I thought to post just a couple this evening.

Unknown Bearded Iris blooming. I have alot of stalks up all over. I think the heat then cold really has them blooming off schedule.

I only have a couple in this color so I'm keeping them.

These are the ones I've been digging out the past week since I'm on overload with them.

The wild lupine are starting to send up flower stalks. I'll need to transplant some this year as they are starting to take over the garden.

No scapes so far and I'm still weeding and assessing the damage from the bad weather we had. The poor foliage took a hit when the snow/sleet and then hard freeze came. Hopefully I have a bloom season this year. Judy Davisson RABBIT RABBIT has sent up scapes already. I will definitely only let one bloom and cut the rest. They are way too new here to let all the scapes bloom.

Another order came,BLACK FATHOM DEPTHS. Nice clump he sent but all the scapes were cut off so I'll have to wait till next year to see this one bloom. I can enjoy Kay and Cindy's photos this year ;-).

A friend on the Email Robin sent me CARNIVAL IN BRAZIL. I'm waiting for a break in the weather to get both of these planted.

Hey, Julia, is your white (or pale lilac) iris fragrant? We used to have one that color and the fragrance was wonderful. Lovely color on your purple iris. We lived in Germany four years, and that's the first time I ever saw lupines. They were growing wild in the fields and were fragrant. Our BFD from Abundant also had the scapes cut off, but now each fan has a scape. I hope to see blooms before I have to go back to Mo the end of May. I'm a wimp, just can't cut those scapes. Avedon

Your Iris are pretty but you know those lupines will be stunning blooming. Always nice to have some new daylilies in the garden.

oxmyx, so you like the dark side of karma? ; ) Yes it's that deep of shade of black/blue and the photos do it justice. DS is the iris/orchid person. I'm just the keeper of them. The second one is so bright you need glasses to look at that one, it's right outside DS bedroom window. It's one of his favorites. He came home yesterday to find all the minis that bloom early have been cut back in the first sweep of the yard. I have this thing when they are done blooming they get cut back so the next species of plants blooms can be appreciated without extra foliage to get in the way.

I adore iris. City Lights is my favorite here, it really glows, doesn't it? I had a big iris garden in Montana, maybe 50 varieties, mostly tall bearded, so many that I kept on going and planted all up and down the alley way. They grew so happily there, andd there was a grower (hundreds and hundreds of varieties) right in Billings! It was a sight to behold when they were all in bloom. But I've given up on them here and am trying to concentrate on flowers that like Delaware. OK, here's something to never do. Don't go back to your old house to see your flowers. Hi Julia, and welcome to the hosta forum. Sagae is a beauty, you will love it. As for mulch, the only readily available mulch in my area is shredded hardwood. I use this in shrubbery beds, but it's no good in places that you want to dig, and it doesn't enrich the soil, but as it decomposes actually depletes the soil of nutrients, is my understanding. In any event, in my shade garden, mulch is not needed for weed control. By May, there is so much foliage that the ground is in complete shade and nothing much will germinate. Hostas like moist, humusy soil, in my experience. If I had unlimited supply of compost, I would put down a layer of compost each early spring before anything began to emerge. In my photo, the bare dirt looks quite unloved, doesn't it? Any earthworm friendly mulch would be great for hostas. Since you are new to hostas, I will mention that each plant takes a few seasons to crank itself up to its full potential. Especially for the large and jumbo varieties, which seems to take 3 to 5 years to show that they really are jumbo. Oh goodness, how evident is it that I miss my gardening center job. The guy that cuts my grass and is the same one that does my hardscape projects was here this morning and cut the grass. But before he started he comes over and makes me follow him to the Lupine Garden. He said he never saw anything that looked like them before and of course had to know what they are and all about them. Said they were so beatiful and of course I agree :-)) Said my entire yard was just so lovely and that it looks so nice he loves to come here. Made me smile as I love it when people love my garden.

Ah, you know I envy you the lupines Post lots of pictures so I can enjoy them vicariously. I posted BFD a few minutes ago. Yours may fool you. Mine has never rebloomed, but there is always a first time, right?

Avedon: It is white with pale blue veining. At least to my eyes. ;-). I haven't sniffed it yet. My sister who lives across the road from me had these lupines growing wild so I took a couple of her plants and transplanted here. Free is always better, right?

Rita and Kay: I love iris but now need to change it up to some different colors. I love the purple but not so many LOL. Lupines are pretty when they bloom but you should see my sisters field of them. Stunning.

I doubt BFD will bloom again but hey, you never know. Probably best to get plants from the south in the early fall so they bloom the following year.

Now if dandelions were in demand, I'd be a billionaire. ;-).

Lupines are so wonderful. They grow wild in Yellowstone Park (only pink and blue) and with wild abandon in every color imaginable in New Zealand in the mountainous areas of the South Island along roadsides, in fields, everywhere. So your photo brings good memories. I will enjoy them vicariously since the soil is just too acid for them here.

The first one looks like "Florentina" and the second one is "Kochii" both are old historical and from Italy.

Well, here is another one that opened today and another group I've got to divide but not till later in the season. Gotta work on the others first and of course, the lawn has to get done and then the weeding and then, well you know, a gardeners work is never done.

aquawise: Thank you. I just looked at Florentina on the historical iris site and it is a match.
I haven't found a good photo of Kochii to tell if that is a match or not.
