Trying to get right soil level
Comments (2)You're going to remove a foot of soil and bring back a foot of soil? Is that right? Here's how to measure it. When they fill the truck with the old soil, estimate how many cubic yards are in the truck. Most trucks are 3-yard, 6-yard, or some other round number measurement. The driver will be able to tell you pretty accurately. Then replace the soil with exactly that much. It has to be measured by the yard. Inches of topsoil is a meaningless term to the people selling topsoil. Washed steer humus is also a meaningless term. If these terms seem to mean something to the seller, find another seller. Steer manure is either fresh (stinky and hot) or it is fully composted (smells wonderful and is room temperature). The only one you want is fully composted. Fertilizers????? What the hell? In soil? Before you get the soil, get a baggie full and send it to Logan Labs in Ohio. They do soil testing. Find out what the soil needs (post your results here and we can help you understand the test) and then mix the correct stuff in before it goes down. I would leave out the organic matter and fertilizers. Use those materials on top of the soil. Fertilizers only make sense if you have roots for the fertilizers to fertilize. By the time you have roots, chemical fertilizers will have washed away. Now if you're talking about organic fertilizers, then you could do that. They don't wash away. Mix in 20-50 pounds per 1,000 square feet of any organic fertilizer. My favorites are alfalfa pellets or corn meal. Both are relatively inexpensive. Those will do much more for your soil than compost. And yes, don't mix in organic matter and try to count that in the cubic yardage. All organic matter is over and above the yardage of soil....See Morebeing in the right place at the right time
Comments (15)he said I could take as many plants as I wanted because he'd be throwing them all away anyway (the guy seriously had hundreds if not a thousand plants) but they all looked pretty bad, and the whiteflies at my house woulda torn them apart. my strong plants are struggling with the whiteflies as it is. he did say that if I change my mind I can go back and take the plants though. I'm trying to talk him into giving me a job....See MoreI am getting discouraged trying to find the right antiques...
Comments (20)Lots of great, encouraging information from other posters. Dig in and have fun. If you have an idea of the era in which you prefer to decorate, look specifically for dealers who specialise in your preferred era. They're much more likely not only to find what you want, but to KNOW what they're hunting for you. If your needs are simple, and you don't mind the occasional replica or "fixit" item, go to any local auction or estate sale you can find. These events are a blast! I love to buy a junky looking bit for my house. After a good clean and repair, it's a functional furnishing with character. I'd like some of these bits buried with me when I pass on! And you never know-you might find some incredible things and bargain prices. If you've got meticulous tastes, you'll search for the better auction houses. These also attract deep-pocketed dealers and collectors, so you'll pay a bundle for your purchases. These are also highly pleasing events, as you can chat with some of the biggest names in the trade. It's a great learning opportunity. And there's still the chance that you can score a great piece fairly cheap. It's not easy to find designers who fit into your preferences. They do exist! Bear in mind that designers insist on ridiculous discounts from dealers, often severely limiting their dealer base. Or the dealers mark up for sales to designers in order to meet a margin. We need to pay overhead and bills, buy inventory, and put food on the table, just like anyone else in business. (and we like to have a little something left over for fun!) If you want to lessen the legwork, a designer is key. If you want to spend years learning, meeting folk in the trade, and accumulating a knockout decor, do the legwork yourself, following the pointers offered by everyone else here. I promise it's vast fun! Like Linda C says: "Yeah!! Dude!! ....I am so addicted!! "...See MoreJust want to make sure I get it right the first time!
