Hamelia didn't come back. None of the Daturas.
One red porterweed and one red pentas that was too exposed to north winds didn't return, but the lemon grass planted with them braved the cold. I think a couple of Mexican Bush Sage that were not big and strong died, I lost count.

I was happy to see 2 of 3 Pride of Barbados that I grew from seed last year finally put out new sprouts, and 6 of 9 seed-grown Esperanza.

Verbena bonariensis never died back and are as tall as me this spring. Oh, and a hibiscus that has cranberry colored blossoms has returned, but not my hua hibiscus.

globe flower. Bummer. I loved that plant. Also, many others can't remember the names. I am gettign much choosier about buying 8-10 $ perennials that act like annuals!

Garden mums and hydrangeas are a big disappointment this spring... either very sparse, weak growth... or nothing at all. I also lost some supposedly hardy roses...

The one thing that keeps returning with renewed vigor is a mini red rose that I paid a whole dollar and fifty cents for about three years ago...go figure!

I try to be very mindful of zones when purchasing perennials, but not everything performs as it is advertised... our goofy weather doesn't help much, I'm sure!

I don't give up on a plant until the end of May. Some are very slow to come back. I have given up on the beautiful Mexican sages. For some reason, those do not over-winter here. But every other type of sage I've planted comes back. I haven't been able to get rosemary to over-winter.

In one part of my yard, self-seeded French marigolds begin to pop up early in April, yet they don't make a showing in the other part of the yard until June.

I bought a bunch of new plants at a garden center yesterday. One is a Grenada rose, already in bloom. This bush has a lovely, pervasive scent. The flowers remind me of Peace roses, but they are smaller and darker in color.

Delphiniums, of course!! a white anemone, my favorite new salvia, Evolution, didn't reseed like the other farinaceas. I will order more seed of it. I lost one clematis and two roses (RRD) and two more looking suspicious.

Yup, delphiniums are MIA for me, too. I just put in three new ones last summer,and they seemed to be doing well, but this spring (in my best Sergeant Schultz imitation)... "I see nothing." There a few other bare spots in my garden that I'm sure should have something in them, but I can't seem to remember what.

I also had a bunch of rose campions that I have been looking to forward to seeing bloom for the first time, but only two survived the winter. I lost some echinacea, but I think that's my fault for transplanting them too late last fall.

On the positive side, the Korean Lilac Tree that I planted just last fall by our front door is looking great and loaded with flower buds. We are really looking forward to seeing those babies open up.

I've never been able to keep rose campion alive over winter... and it's such a lovely plant...

This time, I'm sticking to Buck roses and miniature roses, which are all grown on their own root stock... they should all do very well... especially if mulched well.

I make it a habit to be completely finished planting anything by the 4th of July... this gives ample time for roots to take hold, avoiding frost heave and certain death over winter.

I took a big hit on the coreopsis varieties. I'm still watching, but I ended up with a lot of "1 out of 3" in a group of several types not reappearing. I still see what happens.

The big hit for me after all the rain we had this winter, most of my pinks bit the bullet. They were in a well draining spots but that didn't seem to matter, most of them have rotted.

Pinks have a hard time in my garden, too, Annette, but not in the winter. They get all lush and pretty in the spring and then croak in the heat and humidity mid-summer. I learned just to keep taking cuttings all along to keep new clumps coming on.

None of my columbine survived, which wasn't a surprise. They went from part shade to full sun (after my mail box came down) and by the time winter came, they seemed weakened.

None of my yarrow galaxy hybrid came back after being there for three years. I should have divided it last year, I'll know better for the future.

None of my scabiosa made it, but then again, it never has. I should just give up on it.

Half my lavender "Blue cushion" didn't make although that's a higher success rate than last year.

I lost half my veronica "Royal Candles", don't know why.

On the other hand, for the third year in a row all of my low growing delphinium "Blue Butterfly" came back. And all my dianthus too.

My Dianthus are drowning NOW! They made it through the winter and have been blooming for several weeks, but now Several of them on the lower level gardens are looking a might soggy!
Lost one of my huge Rosemaries this winter from the cold, cold temps. Also several other plants in the greenhouse when the ice storms knocked out the power for a week.
This is the first year the Umbrella Palm did not survive. Had those plants for more than ten year!

I just realized the other day while out in the garden that I lost my dianthus. It was "Firewitch" and quite reliable. I'd had it for five years. Moved it to our new garden last spring and it seemed to be flourishing. This year, it's gone. I even checked the entire gardening thinking I forgot where it was planted. But it's nowhere. Shame, I quite enjoyed it.

Guess I'll just have to look into a different variety.

Even though I hate losing plants to the harsh winters, it's a great excuse to buy something new to try!

I've lost my delphiniums. Coreopsis is very late to emerge, and I have in past years thought I lost them only to see them come back in late May, so I haven't given up on them. Same with some salvia guarantica, which is marginally hardy here and I thought I might have lost it, but yesterday I saw a few leaves emerging from the root clump finally and I'm glad... the hummingbirds love this! I had to replace a few lavenders in my border and some dianthus, but most survived.

So far it looks like 3 roses didn't come back. And one nanking cherry bush. There are a couple of other things...but I am still hopeful they are just slow comming up.

I lost some verbena that I put in last year that was supposed to be hardy to zone 5. I haven't seen anything on my butterfly bush yet but it is still early for that to appear around here.

We had quite a drought last year, I lost a crab apple tree.

More losses:

The two special Nicotiana did not reseed. (hybrids?) Bummer.

Lost all the Primroses but one. I had many colours.

Lost a Cinnamon Fern and the another hardy fern (can't think of the name).

Lost the giant Crimson Dahlia (boo hoo), five lavender plants, the Scarlet Gaillardia, and my adorable "Foxy" Foxgloves.

Lost one rose, 3 sage plants that were 3 years old??!!! weird.. and 2 lavendar plants..! UGH!

a2z mom-- you & I gotta chat.. my columbine is easy breezer a true no worry plant.. and I cant keep a delphinium for anything.. gave up..! i think we need to swap stories! :)

oh and one hydrangea is REAAALLLY sorry looking. haa

I took cuttings from trimmings of my one and only Provence Lavender that I had cut back to almost to the base in early spring. I just poked them into the ground at the back of each of my new potager beds. The mother plant has sprung afresh with tons of new branches and will be covered in blooms in a few weeks, but the cuttings just sat there and didn't seem to be doing anything. Still, I continued to water them every day unless it rained.

I checked them two weeks back while I was weeding and they didn't seem to be doing anything, but they had not dried out, so left them alone.

Two days ago while I was weeding the parsley and beets I saw a stem sticking up from the back of the beets. Upon closer inspection I discovered that it was a lavender plant and it was a bloom stem! I hurried around to the outside and saw that of the 34 little cuttings I started with, I now have 28 rooted lavender plants! A good number of those little darlings have bloom stems and will bloom! Yi-ha!

I checked the three Hill Hardy Rosemary cuttings and they have rooted as well! Cool Beans!

Just shows to go you (wink)...that you lose some...and sometimes...you win some!

None of the chocolate cosmos came back, even the little patch that's been there for several years. Only one Diamond Frost euphorbia came back this year. A nice surprise was the rose scented geranium that came back, orange bulbine and knautia macedonia.
