Who Didn't Come Back?

I am disappointed that several of my Hostas decideded to go somewhere else this Spring. Two year old Minuteman marched off somewhere, one year old Great Expectations left me, 2 yo Gold Edger fell off of the edge, 1 yo Sagae slipped away, and 2 yo Golden Tiera never mounted the throne. Other Hostas in the same bed are standing proudly, but these few just left. Anyone else loose any over the winter?

Sorry, johnnc, I lost some too. I have roots only for Great Expectations, I lost an Emerald Tiara, and a couple of ventricosa undulatas. Dream Weaver is just barely hanging on by its little green fingernails.

Actually,John,I didn't lose any hostas.What happened AFTER they came up is my main concern.We had a bad freeze in April,and didn't lose any then either,but some are severely stunted that they won't look good until next spring,that is if we have a "normal" spring! Phil

If you reseed in the spring, don't expect the same results. Spring is when the crabgrass seed is germinating.

Thanks for sharing that Ron. I did not know any of those stories. They all touched me, and they made me think of many other stories there are out there. I travel a lot on my job and in pursuit of my other passion in life; trout fishing. I see men and women in uniform in almost every airport I travel to, but I particularly see many on my trips to Charlotte. Some of these folks are going "over there" (or getting ready to) and a few of them I've met were coming home. I never go by without letting these people know that many people here at home, whom they have never met, care deeply about them, worry for them, wish them a swift and safe return, and thank them for their service. I hope these people never ever want for their fellow Americans respect and concern. And I hope that if you are reading this that you will reach out to these people when you see them in your own life, shake their hand, thank them for the job they do, and let them know in some small but sincere way that you care. You'll be doing that person and yourself a great deal of good in the process.

If you are really in zone 3 (-40 F), it will be hard to grow any roses except as annuals. But in case you want to try again, here are a couple of suggestions. 1. Plant grafted roses deep, with the graft buried several inches. 2. Winter protection is not to protect against snow and frost. It is to protect against serious cold that would damage the hardened canes and roots. In this case you are trying to save the graft or the underground crown from fatal levels of hard freezing. So do not protect because snow and frost are forecast. Wait until the plants are dormant, this will help them harden up. Protect when temperatures of 10 F and below are forecast. 3. Burlap is probably useless in this situation. None of the canes of regular modern roses are going to survive winter. Pile soil deeply over the crown of the plant and top with a mulch that will have some insulating quality. The soil will conduct ground heat from further down and provide a "thermal mass" that reduces temperature swings. 4. In spring, remove the cover and prune the canes down to healthy white pith. This will probably entail taking all the canes down to the graft, or if ungrafted, the natural crown between canes and roots. If you are lucky, some of the grafts/crowns will survive. For what it's worth, we had a poster, Riku in zone 3 Alberta, who tried hard to grow roses for a few years. He brought in a truckload of peat every fall and covered the entire bed a foot deep. He got some roses to survive. I suggest that you try the Canadian Explorer roses, the bush types not the climbers, for example 'Champlain'. These will be hardier, and some cane may survive. "so considering I'm in zone 4 and you're in zone 6, your should have bloomed earlier than mine" Thanks for your good observations but the above isn't always valid. Zones are not always to do with frost free days (length of growing season). For example, Many plants in zone 3/4 southwestern Alberta bloom after those in zone 2 Saskatoon. Winnipeg (zone 2?) has roses and clematis in bloom a couple weeks before Calgary (zone 3) The time the ground thaws, number of daylight hours, evening temperatures, etc. have a big bearing on when a plant flowers or a fruit ripens. Great advice about not giving up. We have about 50 clematis in our garden and every year a couple of them 'disappear' only to pleasantly surprise us the following year. This makes them even more special,,,sort of like 'The Prodigal Son'.

I had both -- losses and stunted growth from the late freeze in April.
Fair Maiden, Sagae, Maya Swingtime, and Wide Brim decided to go on permanent vacation.
Blue Umbrellas, Dust Devil, Silk Kimono, Fragrant Dream, and sieboldiana are all very stunted.
Others that were up during the freeze, such as Squash Casserole, are showing no ill effects from it. Go figure.

You know, I had forgotten about that late season freeze we had. Must have had an effect even down here in zone 8. Perhaps if I wait long enough even the MIA's may show up.

Only ones nissing are a couple of Whirlwinds (I had 10 in a rock garden, down to 8 now) and Spilt Milk (gonna dig it up to search for roots). Mt. Tom, as per last year, was the last to show, just last week. And he isn't looking too great. May have to replant him as well.

The early birds who popped before the last, late freeze - looking a bit shabby, some of them!

My bigger concern right now is the fledgling robins who are running around in the hostas and everywhere else in the yard. They keep scaring the carp out of me and then doing the same to themselves wherever they stand!

I am proud to say that all mine came back. The fact that they are all in individual pots might have something to do with that.
I covered them as best I could when the freeze came, so no problems there.

The one I'm most disappointed about not coming back is War Paint. I lost some others that I treated for nematodes and potted up, and others to voles, I think.
