Sorry for late response- limited access to email this weekend! Gorgeous photo, Jacqueline3! My Sombreuil only has 1 cane- I hope she beefs up. I'm fertilizing this evening, actually! seil- I love shades of lavender and apricot. I think those both look nice and soft with white. But the bold of the red and purple in the photo above is really striking. Jay, it did not occur to me to mingle irises next to my roses in front. I have no idea why! I'm definitely going to do that, as well as look for the apricot variety of Diascias, Rozanne geranium, and more cat mint. NewGirl - "not a word, still using it" - this made me laugh. And I LOVE the idea of violets under roses! Mingled with these icy-colored, barely-periwinkle irises I have, it would be very pretty. Also thought about nicotiana alata and nigella... Many good ideas from everyone here! Thank you!

tclynx I would like to have some perennials and annuals that looks good with roses and with daylilies. johnie_j What is the color of the daylily and iris you have with shasta daisies? Can shasta daisy flowers go well with the orange and pink daylily flowers? wonbyherwits You have a beautiful garden full of colors and life. I like the combination of yellows and reds with purple flowers. I love those lavenders. Probably I should go and look for some in home depot or lowes this week end. I don't have deer or rabbit problems here. So I can grow anything. I will go to lowes this week end and look for shasta daiies, purple coneflower, lavender and othr color flowers that can go well with orange and pink color daylilies and roses. Thanks for your help.

garden nut, I envy you for being able to grow all these plants. Here only the toughest survive, certainly none of these beauties. I just wondered, in the second picture are you certain that's Romaggi Plot Bourbon, which has a definite pink color and fewer petals. This looks as though it might be Spice or another white rose.

Sun2shinie, My three top pick perennial Genera are: Salvia, Phlox, and Coreopsis. Salvia because of the blues/purples, vertical growth, and in the case of Salvia, 'May Night,' which will send up fresh flowering growth from its crown, if faithfully dead headed, fertilized, and watered, from spring to fall. Its stems are extremely stiff, never flopping. Other newer Salvia introductions are far better garden plants than old 'East Friesland,' and 'Blue Hill,' which can flop over. Coreopsis verticillata is invaluable in its many named varieties, starting with 'Moonbeam.' Make sure to choose winter hardy C. verticillata....some are not winter hardy in my zone 5/6, but you should be able to grow the more tender pink, bicolor, and burgundy ones with full winter hardiness in zone 7. They act like a yellow baby's breath (and other colors too, as refered to above), in the garden, softening any planting, with their abundant, but airy flowers. Phlox paniculata are available from 4' giants to 18" shorties. 'David' and 'Shortwood,' should be in every garden. 'Red Riding Hood,' is the best red. Nothing says summertime like Phlox paniculata.
