Companion Plants

Companion plants for daylilies and roses

I am planning to have flower and vegetable garden each 5x10 beds in my new home. I bought some daylilies Persian Market, Good Impression, Chorus Line, Leebea orange crush, Northfield and also have few orange daylilies.

What vegetables, perennials, annuals and tropicals can be grown as companion plants with these daylilies and some of the pink, yellow, orange color roses I am planning to buy?

When you say companion plants, are you asking for plants that will help protect the daylilies and roses from pests or just for plants that will look nice with them? If you are looking for lists of companion plant info, there happens to be another thread on this forum that has a huge amount of into on it. I didn't notice anything specifically about daylilies but they do mention some plants that can help roses.

For daylilies, I usually like a whole sections of bed devoted just to them though many people plant irises with daylilies (if you eat your daylilys, this is probably not a good idea as the irises are not safe to eat.)

I live in North Carolina and inherited many daylilies and irises from my father. I planted the daylilies in the back of my flower bed with Shasta daisies just in front of them and the irises in front of the daisies. I interspersed the irises with Russian Sage and put coreopsis at the very front of the bed. Joggers often stop to tell me how much they enjoy the effect.

You must get the cranesbill geranium Rozanne (pronounced "Roseanne") especially when you mentioned you have your roses in shady areas. This is a low growing, violet-blue flowered spreading companion plant with interesting foliage in its own right and perfect to hid your twiggy bottoms of roses. In some part shade (which is how virtually all of my roses are forced to grow) it blooms literally spring to fall. (The longest blooming blue geranium of those I've tried waaaay better than Johnson's Blue and Brookside.) For roses in more sun... Definitely salvia (I prefer Blue Hills/ Blue Queen to May Night because I think it shows up better.) For a taller airy companion, the violet purple Verbena bonariensis (aka Brazilian Verbena) is nice tall narrow grower. Erigeron (spelling?) aka fleabane/santa barbara daisy is a low mounding micro mini white daisy like flowers that age to a rose pink, true constant non stop bloom spring-fall. It self seeds so can end up everywhere (which can be a good or a bad thing depending on your plans!) I've seen photos with Purple Homestead Verbena as a nice front of roses companion plant. These are the kind of "supporting role" companions that enhance roses & that make garden look finished to me. (I now personally need to add in other "starring role" plants like iris, daylilies, and dahlias to give me focal points when my roses are cycling between bloom.) Hope that helps! Dawn

I also love snow in summer and I also plant mother of thyme around my roses that get full sun, I try and plant my companion plants that need little water with roses that are also water wise. I live near Oakland California and we get 3-4 months of drought every year, and temps are usually in summer in the 80'sF. I only water my Old Garden Tea roses: Duchess de Brabant Mrs Dudley Cross Monsieur Tillier Mme. Alfred Carrier (TeaxNoisette rose) and my Noisette Catos Cluster once a month to once every two months during summer drought, so I've planted snow in summer and mother of thyme around those roses. Because these roses bloom well in partial shade, and because it is cooler and the moisture doesnt evaporate as fast I plant violets there and only in partial shade by Cornelia Lavender Dream Crepescule Rosa moschata Nastarana Lux

I second catmint and salvia, but with the little warning that if you have cats around, they love to roll in the catmint; they tend to like the dayllily foliage too, unfortunately. I also like daisies, and since you are in a similar zone to mine, you might like to edge with some of the wax begonias. Portulaca is another good low mounding plant, and foxgloves are good background for summer. If you haven't already, take a look at some of the archieved entries in Floota's blog and look at Julias old posts. And be sure to look at Celeste's Pictures They are beautiful, but her zone is very different, however you will still get ideas. And Cindy, who also has a blog. Her garden is a dream. You are going to have such a good time, and remember, any garden is a work in progress. kay

Lovely pictures, all! Wow. I took a suggestion from here a few years ago and added hardy hibiscus to the center of a long daylily bed, and that works well. Another bed has David Austin roses down the center. I may need to move a few daylilies in there to better complement the pastel shades of the roses. I used profusion zinnias, oranges and lemons gaillardia, yellow echinaceas, and zillions of self seeding blue larkspurs in another bed. All beds have daffodils because the daylily foliage hides the withering daff foliage. I've seen beautiful beds with cannas, so I'll do that this year also. Bearded iris did not do well in the beds that were mainly daylilies because the iris can't take shade created by taller daylilies, and daylilies want more summer moisture than iris like. Verbena bonarensis and really tall alliums look good with tall daylilies. Dwarf red barberries give a nice formal touch to the ends of the beds, and the color doesn't clash. Mainly I have to pay attention to watering needs, and watch that I won't be disturbing the companion's roots when I lift and divide dl. I keep my peonies away from daylilies for that reason. I also don't put Russian Sage or catmint in the daylily bed because they get way too big in enriched soil. The deer demolish my elderberries, willows and dogwoods, so I don't plant them with daylilies because I'm afraid they would clean out the whole bed! I like the idea of the David Phlox, so I'll add those this year. I've never grown them in the sun, so that will be an experiment. Cindi

I live nepeta and lavender with roses. Deer and pests don't bother those two perennials. The nepeta blooms from spring until frost. Lavender blooms heavily in spring and again in summer. Both have fragrant foliage. You can use the lavender cuttings for your home, too.

Dianthus is nice, but I find deer or bunnies pull it out of the ground when it's outside my fence.

What is the color of the daylily and iris
you have with shasta daisies? Can shasta daisy flowers go well with the orange and pink daylily flowers?

You have a beautiful garden full of colors and life. I like the combination of yellows and reds with purple flowers. I love those lavenders. Probably I should go and look for some in home depot or lowes this week end.

I don't have deer or rabbit problems here. So I can grow anything.

I will go to lowes this week end and look for shasta daiies, purple coneflower, lavender and othr color flowers that can go well with orange and pink color daylilies and roses.
