Beer's Black and Violette de Bordeaux

Is Beer's Black and Violette de Bordeaux the same tree? I have VdB cuttings and according to some sites, they say they are. I know Bass and Herman2 has Beer's Black. Can either of you guys tell me your opinion? Are these trees the same? Dennis

Im with Herman 100% on the books. I have seen many site including the Hungarian 1 posted here in thread for example it list rogue de bordeaux with such synonyms for it as beers black and violette de bordeaux I have both and both are very different. Ichsia black looks different than black provence and the list goes on with synonyms, ok i can understand if it has another name in another language thats fine but in a lot of case such as the above examples the plants are much different from another. I do wonder about pastiliere and rogue de bordeaux as its a synonym also are they different? I ask because ucdavis list both of them seperately for scion, just that rogue is not avaialble yet and i would like to compare them as i have the pastiliere, so to me hands on is best way not by reading that one is the same as another.

Let me Chime in here about what kind of a Gentleman James Robin is!!!!!! When we went and met him in Oct. I told him I had lost my Hollier and Smith I got from him, I told him it was most certainly my fault (Sally see what I mean?)I had did them in with Roundup.....I thought I was gonna have to wrassle him to not let him replace my Mistakes......There ain't many like him left in this self centered world. I did not let him replace the plants. If JR made an honest mistake, and that is what it would be, like Dan said he will make it right. Thanks so much for the new pictures! I didn't realize VDB was a cool weather fig. That explains the wilt we have here in our 100+ daytime temps. We have had to make a shade "box" for it with PVC to protect it from the sun and winds. It does seem to be a slow grower here -- my drip timing is almost the same as yours. It has been in the ground for about 3 years and the trunk is still rather narrow and the entire plant seems to be top heavy -- if it wasn't staked it would probably fall over. But, this is the first year it has fruited to any degree! I am growing this as an experiment from my landscaping contractor to see how they do here (fortunately they donated it to me). I would be sorry to say that I don't think VDB is a good match for our climate. Here is a picture of it taken a few minutes ago: I do have 3 other figs: two are doing fine and one isn't. Unfortunately, my better half took the tags off the plants before I could note which were which. If anybody can ID these, I would appreciate it. First, the two that are doing well: and Here is my "problem child" which I have tried a number of fertilizing and watering alternatives with little success. It looks fine in the early spring but the minute the temps are over 85 or so and/or winds over 20 mph, it looks like this: Regards, P.

Main crop figs have not started ripening yet on my trees here in the Phoenix area. Are you talking about the breba crop on your VdB tree? Brebas are unreliable to ripen properly every time, although my VdB consistently ripens good brebas. My breba crop finished up several weeks ago. VdB tends to ripen figs that are on the dry, tough side here in our desert climate. This variety benefits from LOTS of water here in AZ. I water my trees every second day for a few hours at a time. They each have a bunch of emitters. VdB is a good tree but you need to keep its feet wet in the desert.

I do not have Beer's Black,But I can say that Violette de B I have (EL Origine),is a very healthy cultivar ,and strong grower unlike others i had.

Well, Violette de Bordeaux was one of the cuttings I ordered from UC Davis. Yesterday one cutting has a tiny green leaf! Fingers crossed it and the others survive! Here is why (from the UC Davis website: Violette de Bordeaux figs taste and smell to some like raspberry jam. Raspberries do not grow in the hot Southern California desert, but figs thrive, so this fig will be my source of fresh raspberries!! They also have a Breba crop.

Violette de Bourdeaux (VDB) is an excellent fig. However, the VDB strain from UCD will have fig mosaic virus. Often, VDB rooted cuttings from that source will really struggle getting started because of the virus. I hope that is not the case for you.

Should you see that your new fig start has heavy FMV symptoms and is struggling along, put it on a regular soluble fertilizer program....half strength at first.....to help it overcome the ill effects of the virus.

Thanks Dan! I have 120 cuttings in Perlite and Peat, most grapes, some olives, poms, and figs. Some of each are leafing, and I have no clue if there are roots. My only clue is brown edges on a few grape leaves, which means stress due probably to lack of roots. I have cut those leaves in half to eliminate stress, and sprinkled 1/4 tsp of Polyon 22-2/11 heat activated slow release granules (left over from the vineyard), over each planting band, and watered it in. They also all got 1 TBSP of vitamin B water. It's been 15-20 days since they were planted, so I think the progress so far is good.

I'll watch for signs of that virus. I think my fig outside has it, but it's growing like a weed! That one is a no name variety that I got from Gurney's last year. I guess I'll have to Google the symptoms! Slow growth is fine with me because I don't have room for monster figs!!
