violette de bordeaux/ early violet

I received my figs from Mr. James Robins earlier this week. They are nice sized plants, but one was supposed to be violette de bordeaux and is tagged early violet. Does anyone know if it is the same variety? I looked on the varieties page at figs4fun and it looks like it may be a different fig. I wanted to know if I have the wrong one so I can still be watching to get the correct variety.

If it is a different fig, does anyone have it and how is the flavor?

VdB and Early Violet are definitely not the same cultivars. VdB is an excellent fig. Not sure about the fruiting characteristics of Early Violent as my tree has not yet fruited for me.

i had early violet for 5 years, and never fruited. However some had a better experience iwth it.
they're not the same fig, like I mentioned in the other forum this could be an honest mistake.

The bush is over 10 years old about 2 feet tall and spindly. Every spring it would do really well and then get massacred. At one time I had over 100 bushes and spraying them constantly was more than I wanted to deal with. I have maybe four of five roses that I can spray now and that is more manageable. Next to the RDV is a Portland from Glendora which is a beast over 6 feet tall and over 8 feet wide. I was reluctant to cut it back because the deer nibbled on the bottom and left the top alone. I'm going to clean it up and spray it. I have a Beauty of Glazenwood that will go into bloom in the next few months. It climbed a rock ledge through a fence into some trees. It puts on quite a show for a little while and the deer would need extension ladders to get to the growth. I'll take some pictures of these roses when they are in bloom.

Tissue cultured plants can be made virus, blight, and bacteria free in the process of propagation. However, if a nursery gets virus free tissue cultured trees and puts them next to ones that have the virus, then, they get it, too. I also see people on here complaining that it takes forever for TC figs to produce, or that they never do, or that you can take a cutting from one and the cutting will produce before the original tree. Another thing people complain about with TC plants is that they are tiny. They start out as a few cells. I have bought TC muscadines and the vines were about the size of a matchstick and the roots were in a bag with much less potting medium than a sandwich bag would hold. But they caught up with the same variety purchased at the same time in half gallon pots within 3 months. I have no reason to believe my fig trees are virus free, so I'm not worried about it. But if I was starting out, I would have nothing but TC plants guaranteed to be virus free.

You can see one of my early VdBs. The contrast of dark skin to rich red velvet Iterior is really pleasant. My VdB looks like it has about twenty figs, likely ripening successively over the next two weeks. My blackjacks look like yours but are huge. My panache tiger has only a few figs staying on, hoping some of those mature.

Gene, I have a Brunswick a.k.a. Magnolia, that I just got from Paradise Nursery so I hope it's the real thing. Most of the figs I see around the city seem to be 'Brown Turkey' or 'Celeste' but I've seen some very elegant-looking figs with very narrow lobes that I think must be 'Magnolia'. I've always wanted this one, not for the fruit, but primarily as a foliage plant. If it produces figs, that's a bonus (but I planted it in a spot that I know will probably be too shady for good fig production). I also have another from Paradise, 'Violetta' or 'Negronne' or something like that, that has deeply lobed leaves and small, very dark figs that are supposed to be especially tasty. This one is still in a pot--it's not supposed to be one of the hardier ones, and I've just run out of places to plant it! I have one other fig, that I grew from a cutting from a friend in Beltsville. He has no idea what kind it is; the figs are light colored (sort of a yellowish brown) and tasty. It was planted by a previous owner and grows huge--it seems to be very hardy, although he said a cold winter will be cut it to the ground every ten years or so. I've had this one in a pot for about 3 years, and just planted it in the ground this spring. Yes, that's 5 figs in a small urban lot (although one is still in a pot)--as I said, I hope to narrow them down to just a couple of favorites before they take over! Feel free to send me a private email--I enjoy showing off my garden, and would love to see your figs sometime.

One thing I can say about the Early Violet (UCD), is
(in my opinion) that is is not "early" at all...
And yes, it is different from VdB.

JR can make an occasional mistake. One black fig I got from him produces some very nice yellow figs.....he thought it was Kadota, I think it is not. Anyhow, he would never mislabel his figs on purpose and will correct any problems.

Let me Chime in here about what kind of a Gentleman James Robin is!!!!!!

When we went and met him in Oct. I told him I had lost my Hollier and Smith I got from him, I told him it was most certainly my fault (Sally see what I mean?)I had did them in with Roundup.....I thought I was gonna have to wrassle him to not let him replace my Mistakes......There ain't many like him left in this self centered world.
I did not let him replace the plants.

If JR made an honest mistake, and that is what it would be, like Dan said he will make it right.

But before I said much more about it I would talk to JR

I had to argue with JR too....for him to NOT replace my mislabeled tree for FREE. I did have to wrestle him that day on my visit and me being a few years younger than him......I won, but barely. He is one scrappy ole honest Cajun. Give him a call and you will see that he is quite a character and fun to engage in conversation.

On the back of the tag, it had the correct variety handwritten. It was so light that I would not have noticed it had Bass not mentioned that Mr. Robins sometimes reused labels. If it had been the wrong variety, I would have just had another new fig to try and would have kept looking for a violette de bordeaux.

Gorgi - was early violet any good like in terms of taste & productivity ?? I am thinking of acquiring cuttings from a source who have cuttings. Thanks

A not so easy question.
My first impulse for obtaining my Early Violet
(2005.UCD145), was the "Early" part in the name.
As I said earlier; I was disappointed in that part,
maybe it needs more-time or I am not providing its
optimum-conditions... I only got a few fruits so far,
and as taste goes, I do not remember anything very special
(good or bad); so to be safe, it must have tasted average for me.

It was average for me too,toward mediocre and I discarded Early Violet.
