However, if a nursery gets virus free tissue cultured trees and puts them next to ones that have the virus, then, they get it, too. I also see people on here complaining that it takes forever for TC figs to produce, or that they never do, or that you can take a cutting from one and the cutting will produce before the original tree. Another thing people complain about with TC plants is that they are tiny. They start out as a few cells. I have bought TC muscadines and the vines were about the size of a matchstick and the roots were in a bag with much less potting medium than a sandwich bag would hold. But they caught up with the same variety purchased at the same time in half gallon pots within 3 months. I have no reason to believe my fig trees are virus free, so I'm not worried about it. But if I was starting out, I would have nothing but TC plants guaranteed to be virus free....See MoreViolette De Bordeaux Fig
Comments (15)Martin I was thinking about keeping some of my young plants in the house this winter especially my little B. Ischia and Kadota (both from UCD) they haven't grown very much this year, so others input on trying to leave the plants in the house will be interesting. And thanks for thinking of me on the cutting! I ordered VdB fom James Robin along with B Sicilian but he is not going to be able to send me those 2, I am supposed to get Smith & Hollier from him this fall. Comments (22)Hi Rafed, You hit the nail on the head there. I do believe that the Ronde is worth every penny and hopefully some day I can afford it. The day that I do get it will make all the wait well worth it! I myself collect all kinds of cool tropical fruits. I personally paid $125 for a very rare and awesome tasting mango variety that I got in Hawaii. I want everyone hear to know that I am NOT trying to be cheap or trying to get something for nothing. I know that eventually I will get my hands on the Ronde. I do know someone who may be able to sell me some cuttings when she cuts hers back but she did say that she could only knock off a few dollars so we will have to see. Comments (9)Thanks so much for the new pictures! I didn't realize VDB was a cool weather fig. That explains the wilt we have here in our 100+ daytime temps. We have had to make a shade "box" for it with PVC to protect it from the sun and winds. It does seem to be a slow grower here -- my drip timing is almost the same as yours. It has been in the ground for about 3 years and the trunk is still rather narrow and the entire plant seems to be top heavy -- if it wasn't staked it would probably fall over. But, this is the first year it has fruited to any degree! I am growing this as an experiment from my landscaping contractor to see how they do here (fortunately they donated it to me). I would be sorry to say that I don't think VDB is a good match for our climate. Here is a picture of it taken a few minutes ago: I do have 3 other figs: two are doing fine and one isn't. Unfortunately, my better half took the tags off the plants before I could note which were which. If anybody can ID these, I would appreciate it. First, the two that are doing well: and Here is my "problem child" which I have tried a number of fertilizing and watering alternatives with little success. It looks fine in the early spring but the minute the temps are over 85 or so and/or winds over 20 mph, it looks like this: Regards, P....See Moremsnano
