As Nancy said.. we are working on adding raised beds on the outer perimeter of our newly fenced yard. We JUST finished one side down the driveway yesterday - added 6 new ones today - DH says to keep me busy filling it while he is gone this week.. helps to keep my mind busy these days.. I'll try to get a good picture and post soon. I think there are 14 or 15 individual 10 foot long by 2 feet wide and 10 inches deep.. by the time this project is complete - I will have close to 80 new beds.. so no bidding against me on the auction this fall..lol
It was so much fun meeting a person that you only talk to via phone or e-mail.. and even more fun sharing daylily excitment. Ask Nancy how she managed to get the room adjoining ours -- made for swapping seedlings so much easier..although we almost had a riot when we were dividing them at MIDNIGHT...lol

Are you going to be selling any of that Trimmer seedling that you bought?

My sister is actually the one who bought it. I divided it for her once we got home so she could sell some of it next year. I just got her ADDICTED to daylilies last year....LOL!
I've found I do not have time to sell (obviously not very good at it either) and hybridize so I will no longer sell....ONLY TRADES for me. I may have to trade her one of mine for this seedling tho....haven't had the time to decide, I could always use hers if I wanted. If I don't trade for it, she will probably have some to sell next year. She has learned from my mistakes, not to sell in the Fall, never knowing what spring will bring!

I've seen this term "Mecca" since I came on the forum as a newbie (and still am compared to the rest of you). I thought sooner or later someone would say what/where Mecca is. Is it a particular grower or a group of growers or several states or what? That and the term ffo have me stumped. Thanks for any info you can give me....Maryl

Maryl -- this MECCA refers to a gathering - of daylily lovers down in Florida. It is highlighted by outdoor parties and bbqs put on by some of the major growers in that area. Since many of them are fairly close together - it is a gret chance to go down, relax - that being a relative term, and rub shoulders with some of the big names. This was my first trip and I already realized I didn't alot enough time.. I believe there will be a MECCA in the north this year that will spotlight some of the big name guys/gals that hybridize northern hardy plants. Due to my location - the Florida Mecca works for me.
FFO means first flower open and refers to the first flower of the season for a particular cultivar. Many will say FFO to sometimes apologize or brag about the first flower as daylily blooms tend to get better as the plant settles in and matures.

I was just going to ask about Mecca also, I thought I saw a reference to it on a nursery website too. Is it every year? I live in south west Florida so I could probably make a trip next year if I'm really lucky! Can just any daylily person go?

Suzanne.. anyone can go.. you do have to register for the big shin dig at Frank Smiths and Trimmers.. just mainly so they know hoe much food to cook.. would love to meet up with you down there..

I've been quietly wondering myself what MECCA was and am greatful to maryl for asking. How does one find out about it?...to plan for next year. I think the Fla. one would work for me also cause I live in NC. But, where would they hold the northern one??? cause I am originally from Wisconsin and can always turn a visit up there into a DL adventure. I'm sure my family would understand...lol

The first mention of it that I know of is when Frank Smith puts up his spring intros.. he usually will give the date of the big party at his place and I think that is one of the cornerstones of the weekend. I am definately planning to go again next year. I think Nancy and I started our planning about Feburary.. reservations were made in March I believe.. can't remember past last week..lol. We'll plan on updating as time gets closer so maybe I can meet more of the forum folks..

Its basically when all the hybridizers in the region have an open house. People come from all over to see whats being introduced, the newest and fanciest, and seeing whats coming up in the next few years. Theres maps of all the gardens so you can schedule where you want to go, and what you want to see those days. I didnt realize that all the gardens close at noon, however, so you have to take that in consideration when planning your days.
