Does this bug you, or is it just me?

I've been in many cities and towns, and tend to visit garden centres/greenhouses in all of them. It seems to be an obsession.

I love to see the plants of course, but also the pottery, and any and all kinds of things that pertain to gardening.

However, when I see things such as cheap purses, jewelry, candles, miscellaneous junk, it irks me.

Does it bother anyone else? Or, do you like it?

Stores have to sell what ever it takes to stay in business. I would rather see bric-a-brac on the shelves instead of not having a garden center.Maybe it helps that I have tunnel vision...lol...Jean

My pet peave with garden based businesses is cheap, junky massed produced garden decor or tools-especially tools.

"I don't understand how evergreen can acidify soil if they never drop their leaves. Those needles stay on the tree year round so how do they amend soil exactly?" They don't as such (see below, however...), but...trees do remove the resources from the soil around them, so it's not exactly true to say that plants and plant parts don't influence the soil pH or soil resources (same thing, really), around them. Evergreens are famous for drizzling dying needles in piles below them, although it depends on the evergreen (less than one might imagine, I've seen few that didn't, really, that were needle-based). Yes, we can argue for days about "needles" and the definition thereof, but they do age and are replaced. The full explanation follows. As they compost in place, they rot and generally get pretty close to neutral pH (most sources say 6-8. That seems about right from casual measurement). That compost has a lot of free binding points for resources (you can look into CEC--cation exchange capacity--if you want). Those can't just stay empty, it's a matter of energy potential. So they'll grab onto a hydrogen ion from water, letting the oxygen go back into the air. Hydrogen ions are weak acids. The overall result is a weakly acid pile once all is said and done and it's gone from compost to indistinguishable from dirt. How acid depends on the CEC, which depends on the initial composition and the admix into soils. This is not simple. But if you isolated it back out and measured it, let's just estimate it at pH 5.5-6, but a volume low enough that it's not having too terribly much impact on the soil overall. That's easy to fix with a little calcium, or whatever a soil test recommends. The hydrogen only weakly bonds. The calcium has a dual, and much stronger, bond. Any plant pulls calcium (in larger amounts), magnesium (smaller), and potassium (in the middle) from the soil, reducing pH. A soil test would be required to tell you how much, but it does tend to drift faster within a tree's root system than otherwise. Succession comes into play with other plants like dandelions, which don't mind absolutely awful soils. So the situation isn't simple here, as those will throw deep tap roots and mine resources from deeper in the soil, bring them up, and overall richen the topsoil beyond what it had previously. Deeper tree roots can do exactly the same thing. But those resources end up bound into the tree's wood, leaves (needles, in this case), and roots. Tapped from the soil, however, leaves space only for hydrogen again, as described above, or for something else entering soil solution from the solids (aluminum, a strong acid and also toxic, is another possibility, but you could get calcium if you have undissolved calcium carbonate in the soil too). As it relates to blueberries and cedar trees, the rough answer is, "probably not." Cedars like a 5.5 to 7.2 pH (depending on the species, I didn't track back that far as the sub-question didn't really apply). Mine do very well at 6.2, Thuja standishii x plicata. Blueberries would prefer 4.5 to 5.5, so there isn't much overlap there. Trying to grow them too closely together is not going to end well, creates a gradient in the soil that's awfully sharp, and one would be playing games with sulfates and calcium that I really don't want to think about. And, as always, mind the sulfur at the surface; it tends to turn to sulfur dioxide and nobody needs the atmospheric smog and greenhouse gasses. Dig it in, but mind the root systems and patches of extremely low pH.

I was just thinking I should add up what I've spent already: $167 just the other day for a trellis, 6 potted Summer Skies delphinium, 2 Carefree Beauty, 1 Vanso clematis, and peony hoops (for my hydrangea). Maybe about $15 on composted manure, $25 on bypass pruners, $30 on 5 small Yews for some evergreen interest. About $30 on bareroot Sarah Bernhardt peonies. So far about $267.00 I'm planning to purchase about 10 more roses yet this season which will most likely include Pretty Jessica, Konigin Van Danemark, Sharifa Asma, Frontenac, Quietness, Morden Blush, and Prairie Joy. I also may spend additional $ yet this season on blue companion plants. I seem to have a thing for pink roses with blue companions.

Karen, I constantly add to my "soil" - which is otherwise pure, white sand. I add a lot of partially composted material (trying to give moisture someplace to sit), early in the growing season I add some chemical fertilizer (I prefer organic but the Miracle Grow does give a boost), I add as much fully composted manure as I can afford. It's a neverending process. The thing is, this sand just seems to devour any organic material I add. Gradually - like, within a year - there is no trace of it! I've been told that if I continue to add LARGE quantities of organic stuff I can get ahead of it and transform the sand into a rich growing medium. Our vegetable garden (where we have added many trailer loads of stuff) is quite productive. The other thing is that drainage is extremely good. It is so good, in fact, that I wonder whether the plants have time to grab nutrients or moisture as they go by. It is hard for me to believe that much in the way of nutrients remains in this "ash tray sand" after watering or a (far too rare) rain. But I sure don't worry about root rot!! BTW, last fall we had a well drilled. We discovered that we have over 90 feet of this sand under us. Then you hit a thin layer of white clay and then granite. What a place to grow flowers! LOL

Leaving the threaded bands on until total cold, is one way to keep seals in tact. Usually the bands/rings should be screwed on tightly, but not as sight as commercially packaged products. Leaving them just a 'two finger tight' prior to going in the canner will cause more leakers. The contents should be as hot as possible when filling jars and if there is insufficient space at the tops (head space) the vacuum will be less. Many of my jars ping within just a few minutes after being taken out of the canner. When this occurs, I know that the batch has a good seal. Rarely do I ever have a bad seal, and can only recall a single quart of peaches that leaked. They were obviously bad as some of the liquid leaked out when fermentation may have occured, and the contents was down about 2 inches from where it should be. It was tossed, and after close examination of the jar, I found out that there was a small chip of glass missing from the sealing area. The lids do need to be in hot (not boiling) water so that the composite rubber will be soft and have the best chance of sealing once the lid has been screwed onto the jar using the threaded bands (rings). I prefer to leave the rings on until they are used. Some have rust problems, but I don't usually see that problem very much, especially because I use a hot wet sponge to clean the rims and threads before applying the lids and bands.

The garden center that I go to does have jewelry and purses etc but I certainly would not call it cheap junk.I quite enjoy looking at this stuff and yes buying some especially when the garden season is done for the year.

I can't say I've ever noticed that! Maybe garden decorations, but I've never seen purses and jewelery.

I can tell you it would never tempt me though. If I had extra money for a purse it would be spent on more plants. ;)

My very favorite garden center was back in Ottawa (Orleans). There was a place called White Rose that was a full garden center including everything you need for a yard and garden, all kinds of house plants, fake (silk) flowers and greens, lots of wicker, and all kinds of craft supplies. For me, it was heaven. I lived close by and at the time I was still enjoying unemployment so had plenty of time to find reasons to stop in there, and I would spend hours in there. They have since closed all their stores - I think they went bankrupt. Probably cause I moved away, LOL.

Cheap tools have their uses. I don't use the good tools when I deal with rocky subsoil.

Yeah, that does kind of irk me, NAF. I'm not even sure why...it just does. That is one reason why if I can, I like to shop in some of the smaller greenhouses, rather than the great big ones. They can be a bit more pricey, but I often find that they will get in what you specifically want, and sometimes they have some pretty neat new plants that don't seem to show up in the bigger greenhouses for a few years. And the little ones pretty well never have "extras"..just horticulture stuff.

I often prefer to shop at the smaller places, too. The owners are generally the ones you get to talk to, which I like to do. Sometimes at the bigger ones they have staff that don't know the difference between a marigold and an onion, or are only there for a summer job, and the owners are only there part of the time. I like to see the owners, and like to think I'm helping a real person make an honest living.

It is interesting how nurseries or garden centers can have as much variations as any gardens can. I can truely say that I have never met a nursery that I didn't enjoy, but where I spent my money was a different thing entirely.

A lot of garden centres seem to have pottery, crafts, ornaments, and I guess it sort of fits into the theme of garden decor. Some even have herbal remedies and vitamins sections. Some have gimicky items like chia pets. I guess they have to diversify for the times of the year when no one is buying many plants.

One pet peeve was last winter when I went to a local mid-sized nursery. I was looking for a nice house plant or something like a mini potted rose or impatien plant. It turns out they had the greenhouse section closed and had a few scrappy houseplants on a rack under a plant light by the cashiers. I just assumed that they would be the prime place to buy houseplants year round but in winter I guess business doesn't warrant it.

Yeah, probably better off buying house plants at some cut flower shops and such places. Some grocery stores too. Certain big greenhouses usually stay open all winter and some of them seem to specialize in house plants.

I may be mistaken, but I thought I read that miniroses REALLY don't do well inside? I may be wrong. But I thought that they almost always die if kept inside, because the conditions just aren't right and they can be quite fussy. Could be totally off on that!

The problem with my mini rose is bugs! It's gotten aphids before and this year it was spider mites. I rinsed it really well, took out all the fallen leaves and cut it back. I don't know if it will help. Just before that all happened, it got a really nice little bloom.
