Hi Pat,
No, the sellers were different. This was by no means cheap, but not at the top tier either. The nice big clump form Ridnaught farms easily doubled the small clump the second time, and the first one was just a single fan. I expect it to open in a week or so.

My absolute fav red from Kirchhoff was Ruby Fantasy. She has died on me 3 time. A friend gave her to me again this spring and she's blooming. We'll see what happens.

Two years ago I purchased Natalie Antoinette, Rhubarb Pie, Cosenza and others. These three rotted within months due to the soil in the pots from Floyd Cove. Last fall I replaced these three cultivars and they are all flourishing and blooming.

I'll never use the soil that plants are in when I buy them. It's been a disaster with a number of expensive cultivars. Soil that is developed specifically for the hybridizers may not be good in local gardens. The soil from Floyd Cove held way too much water even when the plants were immediately planted in boxes.

I don't really know too many daylilies that I would try after a 3rd time, although I might. Indian Giver isn't a fancy daylily, but I just really like the color. For some reason it has died 3 times on me. I had it several years the 1st time & it did well, then inexplicably died. It wasn't in the best spot, but it did fine 3 years at least. The next 2 times I tried it, they promptly died. It is a cheap daylily, I'll try it again one of these days.

I can certainly understand what you've been through. I bought some pricey ones at the LA, and they arrived dry as a bone, pathetic single fans, and it looks like I am going to lose 4 or 5 of them. They were just either simply too puny to begin with or had dried out too much before arrival. On the contrast, those who took the care to wrap the roots in moist paper are all doing well. I just got a couple more dry ones the other day that look about like green onions. When I pay $30 or $40 for a single fan, I do expect it to be a good one with a decent root system.

Distressing, isn't it Nancy?? I don't often buy off the auction just because of that problem. You lose a bloom year because the plant just needs to grow in order to bloom.

It's sort of a natural Catch 22: The rarer a plant is or the slower it is to grow divisions, the smaller and more expensive the divisions are going to be. That obviously won't apply to all sellers, but I think in general you're more likely to get a big healthy division of an easy-growing well-established daylily, and it will be cheaper also.

Two od the auction wins for me last year did not ship the plant I won. When I inquired, both of them said they had marked thm shipped and that they would ship in the spring. One of them was a poster on this forum at one time and I had bought a beautiful one from her the year before. neither has shipped them to me. Needless to say never agian for eeither of these sellers, and one is a big time seller on the auction from Florida. I had gotten several orders from him in the past and they appeared to be lush and healthy. Two of his including a clump died. The only other one I have had to die was Johnny Cash. Sometimes you get burned.

This is a good question. I think I would be willing to try 3 times if I really really want it. (Thus my ridiculous experimentation with ice plants waaay out of their normal climate ) but that's dependent on the year/budget. Some years each bit I spend has been a sacrifice from eating out or some other thing, so when something expensive dies it bothers me a lot! I remember tearfully telling DH over lost plants "There went 2 months of tutoring." I wasn't willing to buy those over again.

Kay, can you give us a few more hints about who the sellers were. I could then go to the lily auction and check out their feedback. I got a few puny dried up daylilies this year and don't want to buy from them again but to not even ship them is bad. There is one guy that I bought from this year that "backed out" of a deal he had with another guy and the second guy said he will make everything right but I haven't gotten any plants yet! Yikes

Oh, that's bad, not to get any! Can you do something about that? I never ordered on lily auction, though I was tempted. It just seems more complicated to me.
About the chances - only if I liked it very much and can find it somewhere else cheaper ;)

I suspect it is too late to have any luck with the lily auction, since I waited this long and they are not even in my archives anymore. I expected them to follow through in the spring just like they said they would. Foolish me. I have the emails the lily auction sent me regarding the wins, and some nice little conversation. That means I am out $31.99 to one and $35.25 to the other plus $17 in shipping.

I also have the useless labels I had paid have to made to mark the plants, and they cost almost $4 each.

I will be happy to tell you privately who the "sellers" were. I understand anyone can make a mistake, but the only two daylilies I ever lost came from one of these sellers in other separate auctions. The plants did seem happy when they arrived, but they are dead. Ah well,

I am out $200 if they don't send me the plants I paid for! I wonder if the lily auction does anything about bad sellers.

If I buy a plant and it dies the first year I almost always try again but if it dies again then I move on to something else.

Here daylilies get one chance if they don't make it there are plenty of others that can take their place.

Add me to the one chance clan. That applies to all plants, not just daylilies. I simply try another variety. I figure if they don't like me...I don't like them either! :-P

How do you communicate privately on this forum? I'd also be curious to know about them (the sellers), just in case. I go to several forums, and the format of them look different from this one, and they all had private (forum) mail.

There are just some plants that have failed for me here ARABIAN MAGIC is a 3 time failure and I know people around here that have it and it is thriving for them. Then there are some things that I have been told wouldn't do well and have FORTUNES DEAREST is one of them. A friend is giving me ARABIAN MAGIC this year and I'll try it one more time because I really like it.
