HGTV show/Cash and Cari

Has anyone watched and thought, most of her 'treasures' look like junk? To my way of thinking, a treasure is a real find~a fine piece of Limoges china, a SS(not plate)cake server, a French(not reproduction)sideboard. So what's the difference between junk and a 'real' treasure~~yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but realllllly. ;o)

I'm with whoever said Home & Garden Television (HGTV) should be changed to Real Estate Television (RETV) and with those that think Cari can pronounce her name any way she wants to.

Many names are family names which could mean they are foreign so they may look like they should be pronounced differently than the are, but in reality are pronounced according to the language they originated from.

Ofcourse some parents just spell their babies names the way they think or want them to be spelled. They think nothing of the trouble it will cause their child as they grow up. I worked in a public school system as a reading teachers assistant for close to a decade and I can tell you there were so many names spelled in ways that had nothing to do with how we were told they were pronounced that it made us think that had something to do with the child having trouble reading.

Well then, do you like the name Klyvlynd? I really and truly do know someone who gave their baby boy that name.

Yep, Vern and Gen. To be fair, both of them produced the "best" work on the show imo. To clarify, by best I mean rooms I wouldn't need to immediately redo. I do like a lot of Gen's stuff on her regular HGTV show, so I blame a lot of what was done for TS on time/budget constraints and the show seeking shock-value. What I think would be even more hilarious would be to have Candace on TS. I think she has fabulous taste so I'd love to see what she'd come up with, but my guess is she'd fail miserably just because she tends to go with a much more expensive and involved look aesthetically. First of all, none of these houses are anywhere I would want to live. Exactly. It cracks me up because they are forever repeating the age-old real estate adage of "location, location, location", yet these dream homes seem to be the furthest from that advice. The only exception I can think of is Sonoma, which I wouldn't have minded.

Posted by gr8day (My Page) on Thu, Apr 12, 12 at 8:24 I've given up on HGTV. I cannot stomach one more House Hunter show especially the international ones. Enough already. I do like some of the programming on DIY. I especially am enjoying the "Vanilla Ice" Project show. What a nice person he is. I think he has to work hard to cover up how smart he is because he is seemingly very intelligent and is likely a great person. He runs a business, works like crazy on his reno/flipping business, has a nice family with children that adore him and is well thought of in his community. Nice to see a guy in the music business who isn't on drugs and clinging to the past. Who knew? He looks great in a suit at the final reveal. I also enjoy "Bang for your Buck" and the corny "Showhouse Showdown". Bob from The Bachelor fame is an odd choice for host but whatever, he is endearingly inept which makes it more fun, lol. He makes me laugh. _________________________________________________ I agree with everything you just said! I love renovation Realities too!

Why I don't watch deco shows on hgtv anymore...

    Q

The show that I really like is Bang For Your Buck. On BFYB the camera takes its time and actually shows whole rooms and details with a well-photographed and easy eye. No jarring editing. No dumb "reveal." The owners explain why they remodeled as they did, how and why they made their decisions, what worked and what didn't, etc. Then the designers come in and critique the rooms. Of course, they're supposed to find something wrong, so they always do, even if it's silly. But you actually have a serious discussion of a room by two separate parties. I don't actually care much who got the biggest "bang", but I've gotten a lot of decorating ideas. Love HouseHunters just for choosing the house I like best and guessing which was the one chosen. Some of the stories on HH are very moving. Unless, of course, it's some 20-something whippersnapper who whines about granite or looks at a perfectly usable bathroom and says "dated". In that case, like some other posters here, I yell at him/her to go live in a village in Afghanistan or Iran, where the toilets are literally a hole in the floor (or the ground). Sometimes we don't realize how great our lives are! As an English teacher and cranky grammar-nanny, I do blame HGTV for its cruel assault on our beautiful language. However, I'll spare the forum my lecture. :o)

Funny how different things appeal to some and not others. My first thought when looking at the DR, is I hate the coral ceiling. It just made the room feel closed in. Ditto in the Bedroom - too dark of a color. Maybe if they had done 50% of the wall color, but to me it just looks like they were lazy and didn't want to trim out the ceiling. I'm not a huge bright white ceiling person, but a creamy white would have been perfect. Also not loving the kitchen color. That wall color does nothing to highlight the lovely cabinets. I love the exterior of the house. I think they did a great job architecturally with capturing the old farmhouse style with the window sizing and trim and porch. I think the inside should have been done more in keeping with the style of the house - not necessarily country, but less contemporary. I was expecting a beautiful quaint home, but instead saw a sparse contemporary bright colored house. I actually thought the LR was one of the prettiest rooms - maybe I'd have done a slightly different shade of blue, but overall it was very nice. That picture over the fireplace being the first thing you see when coming in was just wrong - again too contemporary for that house. OK, I'm done venting.

I like Color Confidential, the one where the people pick from the color wheel, but most of the time am appalled by the choices she gives them, LOL. I usually end up liking the end result by the time she pulls it all together. I also like Outdoor Room partially because I think Jamie Durie is hot, but it's always kind of a groaner because in every single episode something is done the way he didn't want it because he apparently didn't explain it or specify it in his plans correctly.

We actually like watching the home buying shows because we like to heckle the people on them. Like when they're dropping $700K on a house and they walk in and say "I don't like the carpet." It's like, if you can spend that much on a house, don't you think you can afford to buy new carpet? We yell at the TV all the time, you'd think we're watching a sports game or something, haha.

  • runninginplace

Sashasmommy, I'm with you on the heckling. Some guy on Househunters the other day sniffed at a kitchen and dismissed a gorgeous room because 'it doesn't have a rack for pots.' Um, moron, you can always INSTALL one!

I also cringe sometimes at Househunters Int'l on shows dealing with Americans buying overseas when one partner-and it always seems to be the woman-insists that no matter where they are the house must look exactly like what she left behind in the US. Heck, why bother to leave if you refuse to deal with anything other than what you are used to, One woman last week insisted her husband build an entire house somewhere in Scandinavia because she had to have her amenities including a garbage disposal. Oy.

  • justgotabme

I agree Jen. I've seen it happen and it's so sad and confusing for the children.

sashasmommy I think if I watched a show like that I'd heckle too. Like when our house was for sale and an agent, now ours, called to tell us how much her client loved our home. She went on and on and then said but the bathroom wall color turned him off. I mean even those that aren't buying a seven hundred thousand dollar home can buy a can of paint. I mean you can even find neutral colors in Oops Paint.

Guess it doesn't take much to entertain me.
She is a good business woman. She will buy an old cabinet
for $150 and sell it (after renov) for $1000.
Not my type of furniture at all but I like to see how it cleans up.
The name Cash&Cari was such a stroke of smartness.
It is possible she didn't even pronounce her name like that before the conception of the show.
The show could be formatted better but it still wouldn't appeal to everyone.
I wouldn't watch a re-run but I will watch new episodes if my favorites aren't on.
I bet that girls ears are burning.

Runninginplace: I wish I could install one in our kitchen but the ceiling is a drop ceiling and the one wall that is available has a pocket door in it and apparently was built with one stud only going halfway up or something.

Justgotabme - I hear you... but on the other hand, I can also see the buyer's point of view on paint colors. A lot of people want to be able to move their stuff in and not have to do a lot of work at the beginning, or maybe let their ideas settle for 6 months before they decide on what colors they want to paint. And they don't want to live with strange colors for 6 months while they decide. 'Course if it's just one bathroom, that's not at all a huge deal.

The house we just bought was all white with the exception of the laundry room, and I cannot wait to paint every single wall, LOL.

Sasha's Mommy, I can understand to a certain point too, but like you said even a fairly neutral home isn't going to fit everyone's idea of the perfect home. The funny thing is our daughter's room was a very bright almost neon yellow and that didn't bother him at all. LOL Go figure!

Anyone ever watched Sell that House? That guy is TERRIBLE. The results are weird, sparse and just plain ugly.
I wish Sarah would start a new house. I love Design Inc. but that too needs new episodes. The original mind behind HGTV is a Minnesota boy. He left a very successful talk show to create this new TV station. They do warm weather places because that is where the business is (TV business) and they can shoot year round. How would you shoot in January in MN? Watch Sarah she has a heck of a time in Canada!! Mike is over. I have had my fill of him. NO WAY would I let a contractor make design decisions, even for free!
We got cable so I could see HGTV. We are ready to unplug. My MIL was correct, however, all those shows I loved were just very long commercials for products they wanted to push.

One of my very favorite parts of the shows about first-time home buyers is when one of them, usually with a budget of oh, $200K and maybe just maybe they're willing to go up to $210-211K, upon entering a perfectly functional kitchen, looks around and says something like, "I like the layout but [camera does a closeup on a decent countertop and a nice, probably fairly new dishwasher and fridge] that countertop has to go and I was hoping for stainless appliances." That kind of thing always gives me such a chuckle.

As for Color Splash Miami being too Miami I am born and raised Miami and he doesn't DO Miami, I don't know what he's doing but it's not Miami! It is way way way over the top and I quit watching the show cause it was hideous and way over done. I agree about Mike Holmes I love his show and he is terrific at what he does. But keep him away from picking tiles and such. When it's in stone the homeowners better be part of the decision process.

    I love this thread, LOL!

Justgotabme, that's too funny about the neon bedroom. If that didn't scare him, I have to know what color the bathroom is??

What is the name of show where the people sell a house and buy another one, and then each couple goes through their new house and says what they don't like about the way the previous owner decorated it? And then they all redecorate, and then previous owner gets to bad-talk how they redecorated? I saw that one time and thought it was too funny.

  • runninginplace

Well, Color Splash Miami uses as inspiration some very over the top locations--the Biltmore Hotel, some of the South Beach hotels/nightclubs. I did think the one inspired by Novecento restaurant was based on a decent premise. I've eaten there and the decor not to mention the food (best empanadas I've ever had) is neat. However, after watching a couple of them back to back last night...they are definitely not anything anybody 'normal' I know has done down here! It's gotten to the point at which I wonder how long after the team leaves do the owners start yannking stuff down-especially those inane paintings David does every time.

The guilty pleasure I'm loving on HGTV is Selling New York. Now, that is some righteous decorating porn. What's not to love about zillion dollar properties in one of the planet's most desirable and style-forward cities??? I get a kick out of the realtors and the customers both buyers and sellers...just love that show.

I also enjoy Bang for your Buck, in which the owners watch and react as the host and a local realtor and dish about the owner's remodeling choices. Funny reactions on both sides.

I have seen the ads, but havnt seen the show yet.

I need to chime in on the HGTV discussion. I am Canadian, so get our version of HGTV and I still love it, except for house hunters. I beleive our programming is very different than the US. I have been a huge Sarah Richardson fan for years since her series Room Service, Design Inc, Sarahs House 1, 2, and 3, sarahs Cottage and currently Sarah 101.

I also really love candice Olson but shes on a different network here, but I find her new show a little dry. (Candice Tells All) I love mike Holmes, he just gets so worked up!!

Sasha's Mommy, our bathroom was painted to look like water with aquas and watery greens. Everyone that seen it loved it but this one guy. They all wanted to know how I did it. Just a double roller done twice with a total of four colors of paint to give it depth.

"Most of HGTV's shows are carbon copies of one another. It use to be one of my favorite stations now it's the one I watch when there's absolutely nothing on any of the other channels and I just want some background noise."

I couldn't have said it better!

The worst show is Sabrina Soto's - all she knows is gray, gray, gray, with black furniture. I seriously wonder if she is color blind? The time she painted the grass with green spray paint was her only venture into the world of color.

But on another topic, I would love to see Mr. Holmes without those overalls, Tee hee! He's hot.

The TV show with Doug Wilson was Moving Up.

I had a connection with that show in a teeny tiny way. Three different sets of clients/contestants ordered furniture for the show from the furniture store I worked at. It was about 4-5 years ago before buying furniture online was so prevalent. Two were from the Chicago area and one (if I remember right) was from PA. The customers were given money and they had to shop for the new furniture on their own. What I remember most about the transactions were the logistics of getting the furniture to them in time was a pita. They wanted special order stuff in weeks when the merchandise usually took a couple of months. I never met the couples, just talked to them on the phone.

I saw an episode of 'Designed To Sell' sometime last week and the amount spent was shown, as usual, at the end of the show. (Before the big open house)...I think they can spend $2000.00 or less. They did an entire sunroom (with 6-7 windows), in long SILK drapery panels. They claimed to spend only $75.00 on ALL of the silk panels! I almost flipped! I would love to know where they found them at that price...HA! Crazy!

    I dig Sarah Richardson's shows and Candice's.

Who remembers "Kitchen Design" and "Bed and Bath Design" with Joan Kohn? Those were beautiful shows. And "Homes Across America"... But I love old historic properties. Renovate is my middle name. LOL

I haven't seen a garden show in a hundred years on H_TV. Oh to have "Gardener's Diary" back....

Haven't seen the Cari C. show yet. Probably won't. Just not that interesting to me.

Funny story: I have a friend who just had a baby girl and named her "Addyka."

Now every time I hear that name, I think of incarcerated prisoners chanting "At-ti-ca! At-ti-ca!" Yeah, probably not what she was going for...

I have an acquaintence who wanted to be creative. Her name starts with a J and her middle name is Lynn. So I guess she decided to name her daughter after herself, in a fashion, and named her Jailynn (J. Lynn). But instead of the 'l'being lower case, she spells it with an uppercase letter, so her daughter is JaiLynn. All I see is the word 'jail' - an unfortunate connection to a part of the father's life experience.

This may sound bad but I'm happy to hear both networks have poor ratings. Ratings are the be all and end all for networks. Low ratings will wake up the powers that be!

You cannot pay me to watch anything on HGTV and I may put it on the Food Network for background noise.

When I used to try to watch an HGTV show, all I saw was primary colors..orange..bright green, etc.

Some of the problems with the Food Net. shows is the lousy background music, the shows being on film and not tape (makes a difference!), ugly kitchen's like Rachel Ray's, lol, food they coo that most of us have never heard of nor can buy locally, and hiring trying to be funny but they're not cooks.

We need more cooks like Paula Deen, Julia Child and so on.

I watched a Nate Berkus show last week and there was NOTHING about designing until the last 5 min. of the show!

    What are these people thinking?

  • janetta_d

I thought this thread was worn out, but I see it's still kicking, so I want to say, just to clarify... I was one of those who complained about the name of the show BECAUSE she pronounces her name Cah-ri. Of course that's the RIGHT way to pronounce the name. It's HER name, and she can say it any way she likes. I really don't care. My point was that I thought the name of the show was stupid BECAUSE she doesn't pronounce her name "Carrie". If she did, the show name would be great. But, to me, "Cash & Cah-ri" is just a really weak pun, and I love puns, but not groaners like that one. That's all I was saying. Not criticizing her name... just the name of the show.

I stand by my statement that the content is really boring. And I still hate the way she acts like she's picking through flea market junk when she's actually inside someone's dead loved-one's home. I think the show would be charming if they would go over a little of the person who lived there and tell a little about their life, and show the process of letting go for the survivors. Hey... new show concept? Sounds like a downer a little, but man, a lot of folks have this issue. My mom and grandma died within 5 years of each other and they both were pack-rats. I inherited all of their stuff, for the most part. I got rid of as much as I could stand at the time. It will be 8 years this April that my mom died, and I'm just now able to think about going back through her stuff and editing. My grandma has been gone since '98 and I still cry when I open the boxes. I miss her terribly. I'm probably not the only one.

Am I the only human in America (and apparently Canada) who does not enjoy Sarah Richardson. I like many of her finished rooms but wouldn't want to live in them...very cold and impersonal. • patty_cakes

Ig, not my cup of tea either, but IMO, she's improved since her first show. Something seems to be missing, and it's probably those little things we find in a thrift store, ebay, antique store, and sometimes in our own attic, garage or basement after putting it 'away' many years before. It's that truly personal touch that makes a house feel real people live there.

Janetta d, i'm sorry *that* show is upsetting to you, and i'm sure you're not alone. It would add a little something to what otherwise is a boring half hour. I love hearing the history of families and how they may have acquired certain things~~the writers need to watch the show and kick it up a notch and realize it could be unsettling to folks who have lost a loved one. ;o)

As an avid yard saler/thrift shopper I wanted to like this show so much! I can find "treasure" in other peoples castoffs. Once I posted about a shower curtain I found at Goodwill which brought me to tears.

But, I'm not really drawn to her or the format of the show. Entirely.
I love seeing the houses of junk/treasure, and I like seeing the pieces that are reworked for sale in her super cute store.

I can do with out people haggeling on prices, and her and her team climbing through piles of crap.

I think if it focused more on some of the items (and not cars, I could not care less about the cars/motorcycles), like when they had all the lunch boxes...feature them, show some and the value they have, or some of the pottery/dishware.

And maybe show more reworked items, or the reworking of them...tips on refinishing etc. I dunno, I like the idea of the show, but the execution is unbearable. I usually watch it On Demand and fast forward through most of it.

And as I sit around and start to plan my spring planting, I really wish they'd bring the "G" back!

I did see a show I hadn't see in ages, with Karen Macaloon (sp?) where she helps people do a room. That was pretty good. too bad it was at 6:30 am!

I watched 1 minute of C & C show and was bored so I never bothered watching again. As far as Nate, what are those program producers thinking? He's a designer and most of his shows are formatted in such a way, there is maybe 5 minutes of actual, useful decorating information. I turn it on and if it's not interesting in the first 15 minutes I don't watch the rest of the show. I don't see how it can make another season.

Someone asked about watching Sara R. We think the show is entertaining. None of her designs appeal to Moi. The are pale, cold and not child or any user friendly IMHO. BUT she is perky and keeps things light and positive as she tackles challenges. We watch to see how much she will go over budget, to see what outrageous amount of money she thinks is good deal. Pure, simple entertainment. I wouldn't let her come near my home!

I just returned from a visit to a local consignment shop which I find interesting. Last time I was there I had to use a different door because there was a camera crew. Today I was talking with a clerk about consigning something and she mentioned the owner is often busy "filming". I am rather single-minded when on a mission, and still nothing clicked.

When I got home and went to the website to post a photo of my item it finally sunk in: Cari's store is one of my haunts. Let me know if you want me to take a squint at anything for you.

It happens that I was also in Restoration Hardware this week. The first thing I noticed when I walked into C&C is how fast a look catches on. The first couple of vignettes in Repurpose could be Relocated to RH.

The store is very appealing, and it was full of shoppers, and I noticed on the website that she is considering franchises. I am moving and I am tempted. Anybody want in?

  • Boopadaboo

Jamies - you will have to let us know if you buy anything. Or if you meet her!

I would love to have a store like that. At one point I had an offer in on an old house with a large barn. The barn was used as a consignment shop for a few antique dealers. Probably more like fancy pickers. :) I wish that had worked out! The couple was getting a divorce and couldn't agree on a price though after the inspection and we found out how much work it needed. I heard about 4 weeks later the furnace went.

Well, I started tivo'ing both of these shows. I like them. Cash and Cari is a quick show and is cute. IMHO.

The first couple of American Pickers I felt like someone above wrote, that they were kind of sleezy, but the more I watch it the more I like it. They take the time to talk to the people and show some interesting places. Only thing that bugs me is that one guys laugh. Grates on my nerves! :)

Why doesn't HGTV get with it and have a show featuring a different top designer and style each episode or maybe two different styles each episode? I'm starving for some variety and diversity of talent in home decorating on TV. I mean it's not like the world is short on decorating talents.

Her style is very weathered, which I like, but doesn't go if you don't have a rustic style going already. She had one table where the top was made out of bowling alley wood. It was interesting to go into and I almost bought a kitchen table until I realized nothing in my house had that weathered finish. It reminds me of a style that was popular maybe 10 years ago, but is kind of outdated now unless you love it.

Not a fan of the show either. Tried watching a couple time and always got bored and stopped watching.

I too miss the old days with better programming. I'm sick to death of House Hunters and Design to Sell (unless it's a Lisa LaPorta design). Drives me nuts on HH how they always nitpick lighting or paint color instead of looking at the structure it's self. And on D2S they do some of the crappiest work I've ever seen. Paint all over the trim, cheap materials and poor designs every time.

Hubby never complains watching HGTV when Mike Holmes is on, he enjoys learning what's up to code and what's not.

Oh and I'm one of those name people too. I was blessed with a different spelling of a somewhat different name. Dione. My mother pronounces it Dee-on. I've heard it said Die-one, Die-own, Dee-own, and who knows what else.
