pruning Colasanti fig tree

Any ideas on pruning fig trees from Colasanti Farms ? I have a plant that has grown to 7 feet tall in a rather large pot, it is 2 years old and has yet to produce figs...it is somewhat gangly-looking, although the leaves are very large and healthy. I am of the opinion that if I were to prune the plant/tree, it might produce figs as it is too tall to generate figs in the trunk system as is. I am uncertain when the appropriate time would be to prune the plant.Due to our harsh Chiago winters, I bring the plant into my garage to allow it to shed its leaves and go dormant until spring. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It been my experience a fig tree grown in a pot that has not reached its potential height will grow vertically and stragly quickly if not properly pruned.
Here is what i do and others im sure have there methods that work as well.
I grow most mine in tree form (1 main trunk) i let it grow between 4 to 6 feet tall then nip the main trunk this usually occurs in its first year for me. Second season it grows horizontally and thats when i start to manage those branches any inward growing branches i mostly cut them as i try to keep middle of tree open.The main trunk will send stems out its side on the tip and i cut them as well, the tree now concentrates its energy more for horizontal growth. As the leaves develop near the ends of branches i wait till i get about 5 of them then cut after that and tree will tend to slow vegatative growth and push its energy into the fruit which helps it develop and ripen in our climate. When tree is dormant i cut any wood that is of no use inward branches, branches growing upwards that are unsightly to me,suckers, lower growing branches and any that interfere or would otherwise poke me when i move plant around with the handtruck. It sounds like your plant has just concentrated on vegative growth mostly because of trimming needs dont be afraid to cut branches its a tree by nature and will grow back as they can take pruning very well.

I have been re-planting my orchard, pulling out old trees and planting new ones. I recently removed a pear that was about 8 feet away from a 4' tall fig tree I had planted two years ago. There were multiple, large fig roots mixed in with those of the pear. It is clear to me that this small fig still had highly invasive roots, so be careful.

Janna I have a very productive fig tree and I keep it trimmed so I can harvest the fruit. I grow it as a bush and right now I am getting another crop of figs, hopefully they ripe before the cold comes in. If not is okay since I dried and freeze the fruit from last season. I trimmed the fig anytime that it needs it, of course not when is fruiting, otherwise I would loose the fruit on the pruned branches. If planted in the right spot and using a lot of organic material, figs are indestructible and very productive but if not they can be susceptible to nematode damage. My fig just now

If mine would keep those 4 larger diameter canes that look like they are at 12, 1 ,3 and 9 o'clock the rest would be taken away. Also once pruned would also look at those 4 kept for any small branches growing inwards and prune those off as well. Martin

Hi, Gabby. The tree shows severe chlorosis, which is usually associated with improper soil pH and/or nutritional deficiencies or toxicities - sometimes chronic over-watering. The trunk and branches are extremely thin and weak.
