J. Beetles seriously attacking dawn redwood

I have a 6 foot tall dawn redwood (the basic species) and last year it was completely defoliated by Japanese beetles--it happened while I had turned away briefly. This year I was ready with sprays and beetle traps, but by gosh, these beetles are hard to stop. The sprays I have used so far(several brands) seem to stop them on other plants, but their attraction to my dawn redwood is unbelievable.

Have any of you had this problem? We are in the process of discovering which plants we can grow and which we just have to give up on. Will I have to give up on my dawn redwood if I don't want to chase the beetles away ten times a day or spray just about as often? Of all the plants/trees we have, this dawn redwood is the #1 target.

We are in an especially bad beetle area--they practically darken the sun (well, you get the idea), and a trap set out in the morning on a sunny day will be full by 5 p.m.
