None! All have cyclical crops to a greater or lesser extent, that's normal (it helps keep seed parasites under control by starving them out every few years). Probably the most consistent producer is Stone Pine Pinus pinea, but that's not hardy in Utah (zone 8/9). Otherwise, the most reliable is one that's over 40 years old ;-)

Agree, your local native pinyon (Pinus edulis in eastern UT, P. monophylla in western UT) would be the best bet, they will take the climate fairly reliably. In what way are you outside the native range? Too low altitude, or too high, or too dry? Knowing which could help with choice of possible alternatives.

Groem, my biggest difficulty in starting anything from seed is getting good seed. The large E auction site is hit or miss at best.

What is the company i last used a few years back. Got good Metasequoia seed of all things.

No doubt there are a dozen places to go. And if the seed route seems to slow many states have departments of forestry which sell foot tall seedlings on the cheap.

If you do go for the local species, collect your own seed, or buy it from a local collector who's just harvested it recently (late September / early October)

These things (Italian Stone Pines) show up in many many places in grocery stores and home depot starting in early December as living Christmas trees. We see them every year here. The ones sold are usually about 12-15" tall, some may be a little taller.

I will say their zone rating should go down to a 7A, not 8. Quite a few people have planted these out in yards after Christmas and have them growing in their yards as far north as central New Jersey, and maybe even farther north along the coast. They are not that uncommon to see here in the D.C. area either and on farther south. So, if you really want to try one look in your local grocery store, or HD or Lowes in December and you very well may find them. They are usually tagged right and will say Italian Stone Pine on the tag. I see them here every December by the hundreds. You could always try protecting it, or keeping it in a container and protecting it, bringing it in in the coldest part of winter, or building a green house for it. They usually sell for around $7-15.00 or so here. Not a huge price to pay for a sizable living plant.

But how many years have they been surviving? Are they old enough to have been through a really bad winter? You can only say they're zone 7 hardy when you can find decades-old specimens that habe been through it all.

Very unlikely to bear any cones in that situation. They need full sun in the open to produce good crops.

most pines.. take 10 to 15 years.. to finally mature enough to start putting out cones ... if not double that ...

are you willing to wait that long ... drooling the whole time ...

Yea i know it can take years, I am ok with that. Im still youngish :) I am planing on getting some pine trees, and if i can get ones that have pine nuts its a bonus.

Any way the pinyons don't naturally grow in my area, I think we get to much water. I was thinking that if I build a mound or raised bed out of sand to drain fast, that should help keep it dry. Of course with how slow they grow i am also thinking of keeping it in a pot. I am also a little low on elevation. at 4200 feet about 800 below the preferred elevation. Any way may have to plan a bit of a road trip to see if I can find some seeds this fall.

The local native pinions would seem your best bet. Usually mountain trees will need additional water if grown at lower elevations than they are at in the wild. Would not have thought that too much rainfall would be a problem in Utah.
