High humidity and temperatures in the high 80's to mid 90's in the Summer will kill one in two years in Kansas City. It makes no differance where it's growing. Shade, part sun, or full sun. I have tried them all. The fact that they can't cool down at night is the biggest contributing factor to their demise.

I can't speak specifically about Silberlocke but I think all koreana cultivars benefit from some shade around my place. Didn't lose any until I tried one in full sun this year and it was toast after the first +90F (32C). It didn't help that I was out of town at the time either, but it did rain a good inch (3cm) right before the heat. Didn't seem to matter.

The East Coast from what I know having spoken with others via these Garden Web forums... is a recipe for disaster for all the Abies koreana.

Now, that's not to say that there's hope still if the grafting rootstock is Abies firma. Before this person goes any further, he or she will need to find a source for this rootstock when the plant is purchased.

I know from personal experience that there are no Abies koreana in Washington D.C. at the US National Arboretum and that also participants here have commented that Abies koreana always perishes in the Carolina's as well as another couple friends of mine living in New Jersey who too say that Abies koreana cannot be grown.

Here in Illinois for others information, we have very good success with any of these. Blasting Sun, Humidity, it's all here and maybe the only difference is better draining soil or a combination of this and perfect loamy soils.

Mine is in direct full sun, been there for four years and is achieving perfection each and each year.

I planted them this spring. Its not that they are struggling, its just when I compare the two there are diffferences. The no sun after 2:30 PM plant, has needles with the beautiful silver on the recurved needles. The plant in the full sun has some scattered brown coloration on the needles..looks a little "burnt".

I have another nice potential site that would minimize the hot late afternoon site..so considering moving the one from the full sun to this site...

The remainder of the abies koreana I have..aurea and silver show are doing well in areas limited from afteroon sun 3 Pm and beyond.

It sounds like Dax's are thriving in full sun.

Hmm, strange... Mine have survived several days worth near 100F heat in '05, and many days over 90F and 80F - it happens every summer. Must be the dry heat?

sounds like transplant damage .... lack of the ability to properly move water to the leaves/needles ... being evergreen the injury could have happened months ago .. or even last winter.. and didn't 'show' until the heat of summer caused significant dessication of the damaged needles....

here in Adrian MI, z5 pure sand .... last 6 weeks of drought 2 weeks of which were near 100 ... that's 'real hot' in Celsius ... silver show and silberloche are doing just peachy .. in full sun... pure sand .. and i moved the latter last fall ...

i suspect.. or guess... once established.. as noted by others.. it should be able to take full sun ...

make sure its properly watered for the remainder of the season ... right up through very late fall .... deep infrequent watering as compared to superficial watering .... see that the buds for next year looks good.. and keep up the faith ... they will probably do fine ...

i cant tell you how many transplants .... have damage the first year or two after transplant.. BB and potted stock... doesnt matter ... probably near 75% .. one way or another they suffer until they get a good root mass growing .... its just the way it works with trees ..... lack of vigor... needle damage ... wind burn.. sun burn ... you name it.. it happens ... and 95% just keep chugging along with good watering practices ....

PS: compare this years growth to the previous two ... look at the leader growth .... usually pot grown stock is hyper fertilized.. and you can see it grew lets say 6 to 9 inches.. but the year or two after transplant... with out all the fert... it regresses to maybe 3 inches.. something less anyway .... then in a year or two .. it falls right back into its 'proper' ACS noted growth rate ... at that point IMHO... it is 'established' ... and almost all problems resolve.. or it dies.. LOL ....
