Al, have you grown Canna lilies before? I was looking at them this year. But I slapped my fingers because I purchased 4 Princess Lilies (Alstroemeria) Do you over winter them?

Ok, finally had some time to walk my gardens and almost missed that I had a peony blooming. Was almost finished. I lifted this one last fall because since 1997 it grew but never any blooms. Well it bloomed so gonna do the same to another this coming fall.

Someone gave me this honeysuckle and it has bloomed so pretty this summer and smells heavenly.

Invasion of the hop vines. Going to have to get a handle on this during my upcoming days off.

I have enjoyed everyones pictures.

Hi Shelly I have been growing Canna lilies for about 10 years and have about 12 different kinds. They are easy to winter as you dig them in the fall when the first frost has blackened the foliage. Store in damp peatmoss in semi-darkness at about 10-15 degrees C., restart them in eary March.

Savona - I also bought a Dahlia at HD this year and have been very happy with it :) (your beds look so well put together!! - mine always seem to look a mess no matter if I cram them or have the plants nicely spaced)

Hibiscus - very happy on the deck

Colleen, the hops are basically maintenance free but I always send a warning along about them. Mine grow over 25 feet each season and that seems to be average for mature plants. My warning - they are a type of vine that clings to skin, so when you jerk or pull back from it it takes the top layer of skin with it. You won't bleed as from a scratch but it bubbles from lots of little wounds... Not a major type of wound but you will have a wound. I had one cling to my neck one time while mowing the grass and I just jerked my neck away and it looked like someone had tried to hang me for several weeks. If the vine will be near where children will be playing not sure I would recommend it but if for privacy (as I use it for) and no one will get real close than you can't beat it. As you see in my picture it's behind my porch swing - one year I thought to train it up above for shade. Worked wonderful but then the birds found the blooms/seeds and needless to say I had to buy new cushions. LOL

I love mine but they should be placed in low traffic areas and they do need training to stay where you want them to climb. I guess if you were diligent about keeping up with the stragglers than they could go anywhere..

Colleen, Thanks for the comment. The Raspberry Parfait are stunning this year. I did start the gazinia from seed. I am partial to the silvery leafed ones.
I also have hops. It grows like a weed. I also have the golden hops in pots. Very showy compared to the green. I just take it and plant it into the garden in the fall. Then dig it out and pot it back up in spring. I'll take a picture and post it later. I love the hops for it's vigor. But I would have to say that Virginia Creeper is my favorite crawler.

Shauna how do I get my Hibiscus to grow over 6"(the plant).. I saved it from last year & it will not grow..

Jan, mine was about 6", too, and had a tiny bit of bottom growth showing when I bought it in late May. I kept leaving it to transplant and finally got it done about two weeks ago. Poor thing. It was starting to look pretty terrible - yellow leaves and pushing up in its 4" pot. So, I just transplanted the whole thing into a gallon pot with some hanging basket food. Two days later, it started greening up and putting forth bloom buds - five in total. It bloomed Saturday, today and probably tomorrow. We just had a downpour and it knocked the two smaller buds off. But, I think they were not good anyway. They still seemed to stay yellow and small.

But, all of the lower growth is now coming out and it has grown a good couple of inches since I transplanted it. Not sure which kind of hibiscus it is, though. The flowers are as big as my spread hand but very flat. Not trumpet shaped. Maybe H. rosa-sinensis Hawaiian hibiscus? This is my very first one and I don't know much about them.

Try the hanging basket food. That's really the only thing I did other than maybe totally stress the poor thing right out and I don't really recommend that treatment. LOL. I also did the same stressing with a mandevilla and a passion flower. The passion flower has bloomed twice now but that was cheating because I bought it with buds on it. Any bets on whether I can get it to bloom again? Absolutely beautiful flowers, though. The mandevilla was also yellow and is now starting to green a bit but it has taken a couple of weeks to recoup. The hibiscus was really fast.

The golden hops was bought at the same time. It doesn't have the vigor in the pots like they do in the ground. Which is good. I split the plant this year and put the hops into 2 pots.

Your orange lily looks a lot like my Hup Holland.
Mine are just starting to bloom here.
They were bonus bulbs from VeseyÂs some years ago.
I find that I have to divide them up every three years or so.
