A Scape, First Clematis and Iris Bloom & Some Lupines

I found the only daylily scape in my entire garden. Its on one of those extra early Olallie unnamed yellow ones that just has a number.

My first Clematis are starting to bloom.

First Tall Bearded Iris opened. SPOT STARTER.

The Lupines have a long way to go as most of the bloom stalks are still just green and way down in the folliage. But they are starting to bloom.

Ok, I'm sure you've already given this info, but where do you get your lupines, what kind are they? Are they fussy? They look amazing!

The Lupines are Gallery Lupines. I buy them potted locally at a nursery out past Huntington called Fort Hill Nursery.

I did a Lupine garden last year same spot. Then we had that horendous heat and they hated that. This spring only three of the plants in there made it overwinter so I went back to the same nursery early this spring and bought new plants. Redid the Lupine garden.

Yes, they are fussy. Good drainage, no clay soil, lots of water and hate too much heat. But they are increadably beautiful. I have a thread here on the daylily forum about the redone Lupine Garden, I will update it later with more pictures of them blooming today.

Rita, I hope you will post photos of VT Flat Gold when it blooms. I almost ordered that one from Olallie when I ordered my lates. It is exciting to see scapes, that's for sure. None on mine for a good while but I'm actually happy about that since it looked like everything would be way too early this year with the mild March we had. But then April was seasonably cold and we finally got rain so all my roses, perennials and daylilies are right on track. I keep a journal and last year I had roses starting up at the beginning of June which is way early for here. The buds are just itty-bitty still so I think they will start in mid-June like usual. In fact, my tulips are just now fading, having bloomed when they normally do. I am surprised that things weren't unusually early in my garden since it seems it was early everywhere else in the country. I always enjoy your 'tours' of your yard. It makes me feel as if I'm right there. I love all the different plants you grow since I am the same way and have a little bit of everything. Celeste

The guy that cuts my grass and is the same one that does my hardscape projects was here this morning and cut the grass. But before he started he comes over and makes me follow him to the Lupine Garden. He said he never saw anything that looked like them before and of course had to know what they are and all about them. Said they were so beatiful and of course I agree :-)) Said my entire yard was just so lovely and that it looks so nice he loves to come here. Made me smile as I love it when people love my garden.

Avedon: It is white with pale blue veining. At least to my eyes. ;-). I haven't sniffed it yet. My sister who lives across the road from me had these lupines growing wild so I took a couple of her plants and transplanted here. Free is always better, right? Rita and Kay: I love iris but now need to change it up to some different colors. I love the purple but not so many LOL. Lupines are pretty when they bloom but you should see my sisters field of them. Stunning. I doubt BFD will bloom again but hey, you never know. Probably best to get plants from the south in the early fall so they bloom the following year. Now if dandelions were in demand, I'd be a billionaire. ;-). Julia

Christie, when they all get bloomed out, you are welcome to come out and pick out what you want... The white is just Immortality and usually reblooms for me. It also has a slight fragrance. Helen, all on earth I do is plant them with the tuber facing out and barely cover leaving some exposed to the sun. Then I keep debris like leaves pulled out of the heart of the clumps. They like sun on the tubers. If not, they will rot under the 'mulch'. Also if the ground is wet be sure to plant them on a raised hill or ridge. I lost several one year because of rain standing on them too long. I just took a picture of Superstition and Swingtown. It was sunny so the pictures aren't quite as good. I do think the color is pretty close though.This is Swingtown: From Iris and for some strange reason I just have a shot of the top of Superstition: From Iris . A very tall very light blue from my sis is blooming but it was too washed out in the sun to post. I will try to get one in the shade. BTW, I don't think I have every fertilized them.

Beautiful clematis, what is it called?
None of my lupines overwintered. I remember yours from last year, yes they are beautiful, and I also like the leaves.

I am surprised that the Lupines didn't come back in your zone. From what I understand they hate the heat but don't mind the cold winter weather. I think the clematis is Nellie Moser. I bought it locally potted last year.

Yep. You have a scape on a daylily. Ain't it great to find that first scape, finally>I bet in a few more days, you will find plenty, now.I love that Clematis.I Use to have it, but it disappeared.,I just love them Lupines.They are soo pretty, but if they hate the heat, they would not survive here very long,although its cold out today.Its the north wind thats so cold. That Iris bloom is really pretty, too.

Jean, I am not going to be finding more scapes. In fact I was really shocked to see this one. I know last year I had daylilies start up in May but that was a strange year were everything was hot and a month early. I am just as glad to go back to the regular blooming times as those early blooms ment less flowers and everything, even the extra lates, was done by late July. Usually I have extra late blooming daylilies go up to October here.

Love those Lupines. The southern version are the Texas Blue Bonnets which bloom in early spring (April). A countryside full of Blue Bonnets is a breathtaking sight. But they are as picky about where they like to grow as their more nothern relative. They are a plant that picks you instead of you picking them...Your lupines are gorgeous Rita. So glad you posted them....Maryl

Well, you may not be finding daylily scapes, but I bet you will be seeing iris soon...and that's a great thing. I like Spot Starter. The Clematis does look like Nellie Moser. And the lupines are to die for! Love them...can't have them, so I love them in your garden. I have see pictures of Schreiners with coordinating or contrasting colors of iris and lupines together. Love it!

The scape is great to see. Your Lupine are wonderful, mine don't have any flower heads coming up yet, but any day now, I keep looking. I have tons of buds on my TB iris, and I have Spot Starter too, I think it was a bonus plant from Schreiners. Love the look of your Lupine garden. I'm so tempted to go out and get more, just don't know where I would put them. (maybe more grass should go!)

I also heard about lupines that they are like biennials. They just sat there 1st year, then were great the 2nd year, and didn't come up this year. We will try again, maybe they didn't like the spot.

maryl- I wonder if the texas bluebonnets would grow here. They sure are pretty.

Kay- My TB iris season has begon. Its great to go out and look for new blooms each day.

I have seen the pictures at Schreiners with the Iris and Lupines also and I don't know how they manage. My iris would rot if I tried that!

Cundy, I am sure you could squeeze in another Lupine or two. If space is an issue, I have noticed from looking at potted plants side by side the the Russel Lupine plants are generally larger than the Gallery Lupines that I have.

nat- I had only mixed sucess with my lupines from last year. So of course I tried again. I think its worth it because they are so pretty.

Your Lupines are amazing! I have an Aunt in NH that sends me pics of Lupines growing - makes me green with envy.
