what to put with Basil in planter?

I want to do a window-box style planter on my deck and put my basil plant in the middle (I usually keep it as a houseplant). I don't really do many herbs since my mom does so well and she's always offering chives, thyme, parsely, etc... I don't know if there are any plants that would help keep potential pests away or if that's even a concern. Anyone have any pictures or suggestions of things (I prefer annuals in containers) that co-habitate well with basil plants in containers? It will be in full sun.

More basil!

You could plant tiny cherry-type tomatoes, garlic, & peppers and grow your own Salsa fixings. It looks great too.

The basil will grow well with the others and help the tomatoes do better and vice versa. Don't put it in your salsa though. Ooops!

I agree about annuals but you could do a mix of annuals and perennials. To make it reasonable use seeds. You would be amazed at how fast some annuals grow and bloom from seeds. Just put your seeds in the mix of perennials in the beginning of the season and by summer you will have a blooming stump all summer and until first frost. I throw Zinnas, marigold, cosmos and sweet allysum in every year for my color through summer until Fall. The top of the trunk I would use a reblooming daylily, and early and mid blooming bulbs with annual seeds. The daylily leaves would give you cover annuals would give you the flowers. At the feet of the trunk again reblooming daylily, Spring and Summer bulbs, and some more annual seeds. You could even do a short climbing clematis. Look for the clematis that they say are good for pots. It could limb the tree trunk. These are all plants I have grown in pots so they should survive your climate in the trunk.

An agave won't need water and would look good all year long. Try to get a really striking one, like the ones that have yellow, or white or light silver. Use some type of gravel or rock around the plant to give it a polished finish. If the thorns at the tip of the leaves become a concern, you can tip them off periodically. Another option could be Hesperaloe. You could even plant different colors of the same plant. I know they come with pink, red and yellow flowers. Just an idea...

haha, no I don't think I'll put it in the salsa - but I do like the idea of peppers and tomatoes with it. I didn't think of garlic and I have some to start in my veggie garden, I might as well throw a clove or to in my planter - great idea! Thanks!

Basil, Oregano, tomatoes and garlic for your own spaghetti sauce.
Either way.

When I used to sell the plants I grow, I used to sell these as "Annie's Collections". They sold like hotcakes! People came back every year to buy them again and again.

haha, I love that idea - I don't know why I was stuck on the idea of just flowers or just herbs. Adding oregano with garlic and tomatoes right off the porch is genius!

basil, thyme, rosemary and sage are the usual groupings.

basil, thai basils, geneovese basils, and purple basils are another grouping.

In fact any groupings of herbs you would normally use..
