jessew, You have been given many great options here, however, the problem with repelants is that any that if they will work at all they will need to be replaced regularly to be effective. Like you, our best crop is rocks and our critters are moles and squirrels. What I have tried effectively in the past is to basically build a raised bed with a wire bottom. I lay out a large circle or whatever shape appeals to me, dig out as much soil as possible and then lay down wire (voles will need 1/2" hardware cloth) and then build up the sides to about 10" to 12" with whatever material I have handy for the walls on top of the wire (often the rocks I remove are incorporated into the walls). I then backfill this with amended soil and plant away! NO MORE CRITTERS! I also find that the soil warms up earlier and thus earlier blooms and it drains better than the surrounding beds. Hi gyozu, I tried to do the same thing with my Red Lions this year and left them out in a protected area with mulch. Too soon to tell if I will be successful - though I did pick the coldest winter to try! Frank (also in Raleigh) said that the arboretum successfully overwinters their hippis outside, so I thought I'd give it a try with all those Red Lions and their bulblets. Nothing much lost if I lose them. I'll post here if they make it. What do your coral/ white ones look like? If they're an uncommon heirloom type folks would be willing to trade. Alana

The NoID's are not from White Oak, I am sorry that I wasn't more clear (the NoID question was a last minute edit and I should have explained that) they are from garden club plant sales. The big green NoID (about 36" across) has been VERY SLOW but it has NEVER had a border any wider than you see here and the Frances Williams photos show much wider yellow/ cream on the edges. I have had it for about 8 years and it did not do all that well until 3 years ago when I moved it to its present location. Shade Fanfare on the hosta library matches perfectly, so I will consider it named! It is about 4 years old and has done well right from the start, although it suffers sunburn in sunny locations but is just about perfect in this shady spot - so it is aptly named! Thanks! BettyLu

Joanna, unless you allowed the foliage to ripen and age naturally and then die off completely before you salvaged the bulbs, then they are pretty much worthless for next season. They need all that foliage to re-energize the bulbs for next year's flowers. And if you read any of the previous thread, storing them is not really a great option - they "store" best when planted :-) If you have already removed the foliage, then just plant the bulbs in an area of the garden that receives decent sun and has well drained soil. They are unlikely to bloom next year but allow any foliage to grow and remain in place intact until it dies off naturally in fall and they should flower the second season. If the foliage is still in place, then plant the bulbs - foliage and all - in the same sort of location described above. Chances are good they will bloom next year. But not at Easter!! They are forced into bloom at that time of year in greenhouses.......in the garden, Easter lilies, Lilium longiflorum, bloom in late June or July.
