Mom's cottage garden peaks (pics)

Hi all,

I went to my mom's house today to look at her garden. It looks lovely, so I took some photos to share with you. The pink rose is Guy de Maupassant, the white is Perdita, the small pink is Our Lady of Guadaloupe, the big flowered dark pink is Yves Piaget. The iris is Sweet Musette, and the other flowers are foxgloves, alstroemerias, and columbines.

This is her tomato bed. It has been invaded by Mme Julia Correvon and Jackmanni clematis, red asiatic lilies and screaming pink ivy geraniums.

Oh yeah- we met the nicest English lady down the street on Mother's Day, and got a tour of her HUGE cottage garden. I'm trying to finagle a good day to go over and snap some shots for you all.

Fabulous house! I have a corner bed kinda like you are talking about. It is anchored with a small tree (crepe myrtle which you can't see much of in the photo)and two smaller crepes that are shrub sized. Iris, daylilies, and daisies make up the rest along with daffodils and tulips. We put in some liriope grass to anchor the edges. We dump mulch in there a couple of times a year...otherwise grass seed tries to take over. Now that the bed has been there nearly six years, I really enjoy it. It provides a pretty corner and a nice view from the front porch. From time to time, I put a few leftover annuals there. It definitely is the 'step-child' of my garden area. With the great porch you have, I'd concentrate on beds there for a while in order to make it even more enjoyable. Fill the street bed with easy care perennials and mulch and water occasionally. Oh, what a wonderful treat to come home from vacation and read all about your September gardens and see all your gorgeous pics! It is really difficult to come back from a place as beautiful as Kauai and get into the usual grind of the every day routine stuff. But your words and pics are helping tremendously! And thanks so much for the nice compliments on my gardens. It's so nice to share them with others who appreciate all that goes into creating them. : ) The paint I used on the chair was Krylon Fusion plastic paint and the color is hyacinth blue. So far it does seem to be holding up well. I really love the color. It's the same color I used on the pond in the potager. It says it can be used on metal so I did just that. It hasn't peeled at all, and it is in strong direct sun all day. I've used a few other colors, too. This paint also has a comfortable spray nozzle, so your finger won't tire as quickly as it can from the old style nozzle. HTH! CMK, that pic of MS is from earlier this year. I have now shovel pruned her. I loved the color but the blooms were too clustered even for this floribunda fanatic. There were so many that most of them never opened fully. It was a good rose, other wise. I hope you have better luck. Libby, glad you liked the plumbago pic! I hope it comes back for me. It grows like a weed in most of So.Cal but I am colder up here so I'll just have to wait and see. I hope yours does well for you, too! Not that you need any more beauty in your gardens. tina - isn't it great to have garden memories? I think gardens can evoke more memories because it encompasses the senses of sight, touch, sound, and smell. LL - I wish you could come see my garden in person! That would be so fun! In that bed, I grow most of my roses - a mixture of HT's, moderns, minis, OGRs, and climbers. Since I didn't know much about companion plantings, I just bought a package from Bluestone and planted in between the roses. I think my favorite are the asters and the catmint. I have iris from an old abandoned garden (there was a house there years ago). I love the spiky foliage and the thought those iris survived through so much neglect. schoolhouse - it's not a secret garden like yours, but since it's in the back and away from the house a little bit, it does have a secluded feel to it. I'm also trying to get some vines to grow up the gazebo so the feeling will be even more enhanced.

I'm jealous. That's a huge garden and it is beautiful. Mine is what is called, sometimes laughingly, a "cottage garden" - like a crazy quilt of plants. I envy your ability to create something like this.

Prettiest garden ever! I love the colors and combinations of the flowers...and yes, I also think living in CA is cheating (of course, that is definitely jealousy speaking)! ;)

Thanks for sharing such marvelously inspiring pics. Your mother is quite an artist.

Heaven just Heaven! To give you an idea of the drooling this is causing. Here in zone 5/6 the tulips are just finishing and the Iris leaves are up maybe 10 inches. Roses are still leafing out and Hosta are still just spikes of curled up leaves. All is just shades of green beginnings. We won't have rose bloom till June. Your Mom's garden is an inspiration. Can't wait to see her neighbor's too.

Simply stunning, just like the shots I have seen of your garden are simply stunning. I see were you have inherited your gardening skills from. Your mom truely has exceptional talent to be able to create such a stunning garden. I just love all the views but that very first picture is my favorite. Then the tomato garden is increadable. My tomato garden never looked like that! Gorgeous. All of it, simply gorgeous.

Breathtaking. I had no idea there were so many colors of alstromeria. I like the way the colors of the foxglove and alstromeria play off one another.

Do you and your mom trade ideas (and plants) a lot? Both of your gardens are amazing. How close does she live to you? Such a special gardening bond you must have with her.

Thanks, all of you wonderful gardeners. My mom and I spend lots of time in each other's gardens, since she lives less than a mile away. Our flower gardens are very small, so we can focus a lot of energy on them.

The photos show why I don't use pink and purple in my garden- I get it at mom's house. She gets her orange and yellow fix at my house. We don't get the ideas from one another- I get them from you and share.

Your mom's garden is as amazing as yours!

Absolutely glorious - I would be in cutting heaven. I always have flowers year round, but many of them are not good cutting flowers. Love your mom's color combinations!

There's something about that Calif. sunshine that makes growing flowers beautifully. When we were visiting at Edwards AFB years ago, everybody had the most breathtaking roses I've ever seen! I love her mixture of colors. Those foxglove and columbines and that Iris are like eye candy! Now when can we see your flower gardens. I bet they are as pretty as your Mom's.?

These photos and your words are so helpful! So often we seep beautiful photos with the plants not named, and that is just frustrating to those of us who are starting out. This thread is going to remain my inspiration for a long time to come. Got any more pictures of your mom's yard?

I can't wait to see the pix of the other yard you mentioned.
