Early bloomers from Nashville

Despite rain overnight and heavy dew this morning, several daylilies had openings worth photographing. The unusual forms are taking center stage in the extra early season.

HELIX beckons me to come on over for a closer look at its ffo.

CHAMA VALLEY duo

COURSE OF ACTION

STIRNG BIKINI is blooming on very short scapes again. It really needs a new location.

KOKOPELLI, that lovable trickster, is dancing on tall, tall scapes this time.

COBALT INTRIGUE, a midseason daylily, is blooming earlier than it should. These must be scapes that never came up last fall. Twins on ffo.

GRANDMA'S SMILE is a new one I got as a bonus this spring.

Purple seedlings held well in the rain and dew.

Closer look at two EE X GN blooms.

GILDED KNIGHT, the seedling's daddy, had a pretty toothy edge this morning.

MOONLIT MASQUERADE

MY GIRL, STAR OF INDIA, COLORADO MOON FIRE and NUTMEG SPICE were also blooming today, but were either splotchy or having trouble opening.

I don't have any spiders but like that Helix more and more. Also Cobalt Intrigue and Gilded Knight are lovely.

Debra- Great shots and a wonderful batch of blooms today. CHAMA VALLEY intregues me, very striking. Plus I just love that dark seedling of yours.

I live in zone five and observed the same a few weeks ago. The short answer: cut everything back right now. Cut the Joe Pie Weed by half; it will bloom later and there will more flower clusters but smaller. If half frightens you cut back by 1/3 The phlox should have been thinned and pinched three weeks ago. take a third off, don't leave stubs, and thin out skinny overcrowded stems. The phlox will form two sprays of blossoms from each pinched terminal. They will bloom two weeks later and be a foot shorter and will less likely to flop and get mildew Same thing for flowers that send up multitude of stems: tall coreopsis, boltonia, asters. Clip them back by half and they'll be better. Not coneflowers or more 'single stemmed' plants. It takes too long for those blooms to form Not candlelabra types: veronica, veronicastrum, mulleins, digitalis, goldenrods....shapes are weird and ugly. I think a 'clump' of tubers has a more extensive root system that will get your dahlia going faster. I had the same thing with a couple of varities that I purchased as pot roots (which apear the same as the box store clumps that you get). Those shot up much faster than the cuttings that I took. In the long run, the bloom/plant quality is usually better with the cutting or single tuber; but those with the larger root system tend to develop much faster.

My Harison's Yellow, lupines, purple historic iris (I think it's the same one) are all done. I still have some late blooming modern iris and the daylilies are just starting. I just noticed buds forming on the rose of sharon - seems too early to me.

Here, Lima and Lemon Lime are in a race to be the first rebloomer. Lemon Lime had a head start. Its bud emerged first, so I brought it out of my cool basement earlier, but Lima catching up. If I had brought them into the warm house at the same time, I suspect Lima would have won easily. Bill

Oh wow! I love Chama Valley Debra. That purple seedling could find a home in my garden, and I love its daddy too. Your blooms are coming on. Thanks for posting. We'll see how many I "just have to have" that you post this year.

These are all beautiful. Cobalt Intrigue and your purple seedling would be my favorites if I had to choose. I also really like Gilded Knight. You do a wonderful job taking pictures.

Congratulations on your purple seedling. It looks like it way outpaces dad's budcount and branching.

Don't you just love My Darling Clementine? She's always the first in my garden.

Your seedling has great branching and bud count from what I can see in the pic. Nice yellow to green throat that shows up on the dark purple really well.

All the other pics are great. Like them all.

Glad to see the picture of Grandma's Smile. I received it this spring now I can't wait to see if I get a bloom!
All of the pics are wonderful. I bought my first spiders last summer so I will be seeing most of them bloom for the first time in a few weeks.

For those of you who liked Chama Valley, those are the largest and best flowers I've had on it in four years. CV spent its first two years in a pot, and last year only put up one scape out of five mature fans. This year all the fans have a scape, but bud count is poor (8-11 per scape). In its current location, performance is maginal.

Kay - If you really like the seeding, you could test it out for me. I'd be interested in knowing if the bud count is higher farther south.

Random Harvest - The seedling does outdo Gilded Knight on branching and bud count, but not Evening Enchantment, the pod parent. The dark baby blooms about a week earlier than Evening Enchantment, which used to be a reliable rebloomer until the neighbors planted trees next to it. So far the seedling has not rebloomed, but it is surrounded by other seedlings and, at this time, only gets about 5 hours of sun a day. My Darling Clementine is a great little reblooming workhorse here. It's never been the earlier bloomer here, but its always in the first 7 or 8 to bloom.

Vickie - You are right about Kokopelli's star-shaped throat. That's one of it's many unique features. Your comment makes me think I need to plant more of my Koko seed crosses.

Sue - I think you will like Grandma's Smile. A friend had it, and she says it's one of her very best pinks. I would like it better if it didn't have white midribs.

wow, these are all so pretty.I LOve that CHARMA VALLEY. and COBALT INTRIGUE is gorgeous, too.Really like your GRANDMA'S SMILE,too and GILDED KNIGHT. My favorites are them seedlings.Love them.Your MOONLIT MASQUERADE is really pretty, too.I had a bloom on mine a few days ago, but,it looked horible,.Maybe the next blooom will look better.

Gorgeous photography. Can't get tired looking at them again and again and again.
Kokopelli, Course of Action, the seedling and Chama Valley, are wow!

Thanks Ben! The three you mentioned all came from Ladybug Daylilies. I really like the Ned Roberts and Dan Hansen unusual forms.
