Blue Eyes ready for the rain (photos)

We've got storms coming this afternoon. But this morning's blue eyes were wide awake and ready for the day.

TEXAS BLUE EYES ffo - I fertilized this one in the early spring and it paid off with the most saturated color and best bud count I've had on this one in four seasons.

METALLIC BLUE EYES clump

INDIGO BUNTING ffo

JITTERBUG BLUES - This one is a big clump now with lots of blue-eyed blooms, but the flowers open late and it's hard to photograph in full sun.

Josh, sounds Like you live in a fun town where you can meet folks at the town square at noon time . I Like being able to walk over to the creek and drawing as much Crystal clear water as you need, boy that must be nice. I have a brother who used to live in Bishop, Ca. And he could do the same thing. Wantonamara, wow sounds like you got your share of water too, I bet your relieved about not having to truck in your own water, and then hard water. Erin, are you kidding they're going to love it !!! The good thing about rain water is your cacti and succulents can sit in rain water and it won't even faze them, that's right I've had mine sitting in it for weeks and look as healthy as ever. Rosemarie, empty your yard waste and start a compost pile and start saving the rain water, unless you have a creek in your back yard which I don't think they have creeks in San Diego or do they? Greg

Thanks everyone! :o) For some reason (maybe because the weather turned cool all the sudden for one day) a bunch of my minis turned nocturnal on me. On the morning of the 12th, I got a bunch of flowers, but then in the evening (hence the darker pictures of Blue Elf), a whole new set of flowers started to open. You can see Blue Elf is not open all the way, but the color was so rich, I had to take some pictures. I wanted to follow up with morning 13th pics, but the rain ruined that idea... These minis are so dang cute!

Ready to make rain barrels

Way to go Sharon! It seems like Advanced Drum has been charging more for their barrels (earlier in the year they were $18!). I have 6 barrels and no problem getting water out of them. You can configure your barrels to suit your needs. I have a spiggot on the bottom, and the tops removed, altered and screened for dipping buckets in. They have not been dry this summer as I only water parts of the landscape, not all of it. Although the watering of vegetables with this water is not recommended, I do it anyway. There is no other alternative for me to get water to the veggies except from the hose which I haven't done much of at all this summer, I refuse to. The trick to the rain barrels is to make sure you have enough to suit your needs, and they are an excellent solution to watering problems. If you run an extended link of the barrels (I have them in pairs, but will probably change that to one very long linking of them) a pump works well and can be hooked up to different watering units in different barrels. A sump pump is about $65. You could run an entire watering system for under a $500. That sure beats at $8,000 cistern instillation! GGG

Mantis, that is the same unknown...supposed to be African Grape, but it performs really well and I like the red so it stays. Yes, Kate it is an odd year for blooms. Some have outdone themselves as usual, but some have been very subpar in blooms. Yes, Avedon, I do have Garret Mason and it will soon be blooming as it is a later one. I moved Eyes of Distinction and Ace of Hearts year before last and they pouted last year but are better this year. I am not sure yet on colorfastness, Maryl but rain does not bother Purple Tarantula at all. This is the third year for Laura Harwood. I got two good blooms the first year, a few more last year and it is covered this year. And you are right. Your garden is the test of what it does for you. Margo Reed indeed is a beauty in a lot of gardens. It was never happy here and curled up its toes and died. Go figure. Thank you all for looking and commenting. By the way, Julia, Hot Tamales and REd Hots has put up a re-bloom scape, so it will do a bit better than the initial 15 buds. kay

All of these blue eyes are stunning. Two of these I have wanted forever: Cerulean Warbler and Texas Blue Eyes. Your photos of them are outstanding. Your seedlings are exceptionally beautiful too. I love all of your pictures today (no surprise there). It is always a treat to 'wander' through your garden.

All those gorgeous blued eyed babies! It seems as if your Cerulean arbler is having a good "on" year. Beautiful! Actually, your second seedling is my favorite of this group.

Lovely lovely seedlings, every one! I love blue eyes & yours are great. Texas Blue Eyes is probably my favorite, wonderful color. Indigo Bunting looks quite brilliant too, love Metallic Blue Eyes too, that is a wonderful clump.

Jean - I only fertilized a few this year. I use Bayer 3-in-1 for roses and flowers, more for the systemic insecticide than the fertilizer. It got too hot too early this year, and I was afraid to apply it when it was in the 90s. Some years I put on compost and Milorganite, but hot weather happened too fast for that.

Chasing Shadows has a dark blue violet eye, but for some reason it photographed as blue today.

Nancy - Indigo Bunting is quite striking. The eye photographs more of an electric blue that it really is. It's more of a denim blue in person.

Julia - Yes, I'm holding back because of tall grass and weeds growing in my gardens. My gardens look like hillbilly hell this year. The clumps are the most you're going to see until I get a chance to tame them. With the early extreme heat plus bloom starting early before school was out, I didn't have time to take care of them properly.
