I would wash the roots really well in a mild bleach solution for about 15 minutes and rince well before repotting in clean new peat-free soil. Fungus gnats love peaty soil, they also love eating roots which have been damaged. I'd advise cutting the roots up into the white and let them heal a day or so before repotting. They will be fine as long as they heal over. Make sure the soil has a lot of substance, like perlite or pumice which will make it airy. You can also grow spiders in water. I had one I converted to a bowl of marbles, the roots attached to the marbles and really took off. When my soil grown spider plants look really bad I cut all the leaves off up to the roots and force dormancy. You do this by cutting all the leaves off, do not cut into the stem. Put it in a cool dark corner and do not water it but just enough to keep the root alive. I would let it stay that way until fall when you can bring it out of dormancy and then gradually water until they get what is needed. You must make sure to force dormancy or else you risk losing them. Usually spiders are heavy drinkers, so a well draining soil is a must for them otherwise you'll be rotting roots right and left. I broke a Cherokee Green off recently when I was moving milk jugs of tomatoes for a plant sale. I stuck the broke top in the pot next to the rest of the plant. It wilted for a couple of day then perked up and is growing like crazy--just found it has put on tomatoes. I will plant both in a container when my hubby gets back into town with some more potting mix. Peggy

Thinking maybe it would be better to remove an inch or two from the longer root it would help to grow more leaves. ==>> i dont follow.. how pruning the roots will make more leaves ... is it potted in media.. or in water ???? .. else.. how do you know how long the roots are??.. and how many there are ... ken

Definitely time to repot. This so-called soil provided by the producers is not good in the long run. Try a mixture of lean soil (seeding soil works nicely), gravel (very fine, it may be very coarse sand), some seramis and perhaps a little pine bark. Or any not-too-rich soil with lots of perlite mixed into it. The trick is to make the soil very free-draining, then you may water with very little danger of overwatering. I think that wrinkling of the leaves on your plant is actually due to underwatering. This present soil is retentive, but if you water in small quantities or infrequently (or both), the water stays near the surface and roots get very little. While repotting, remove as much of original soil as possible (use your fingers to pry the roots away gently), give your plant a good drainage in new pot, sit it in firmly and DO NOT water for a couple of days after repotting.
