WEEDS!!! If you plant Daylilys, you will have WEEDS!!! It is one of the best kept secrets by the secret Brotherhood of the Daylily. I have weeds here I have never seen before here or anywhere I have been. There are those that would cover it up, they would have you believe that it is not a problem, but it is very real. They will deny it and try to hide the truth, but I am here to tell you all about the WEEDS!!! They would tell you to use preemergents, weed killers, and mulch, but no matter what you do you will have WEEDS!!! Just when you think you are WEED free, and let your guard down they will be back, and you will have more WEEDS!!! I just wanted you all to know the truth about WEEDS!!! NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH ABOUT WEEDS!!! Please do not tell the secret Brotherhood of the Daylily that I have told their best kept secret. But I have told the truth!

To spray or not to spray? that has always been the real question and perhaps the meaning of all life as well.

Seriously, though, what methods do you use to control weeds in your daylily beds and mixed borders?

For many years I've used hand weeding in flower beds with spot spraying of Roundup in larger unplanted areas (like what will soon be my new lawn). However, I've just got the landscape to the planting stage last fall and I have far too much flowerbed to hand weed it all. The areas where I was able to till over the past couple years are not too bad but I have one corner that must be packed with weed seeds. It had some previous plantings and really tall weeds so did not get tilled (yet). At $16-25 per yard mulch is going to nearly deprive my children of food. And, none of my beds are purely dl, they are mixed borders. So, ideas welcome.

Well, Ann... I'm not new to bulbs, such as Hippeastrums, but the Sprekelia are new to me... they should behave very similar to other amaryllis type bulbs, though... Sprekelia are actually from Mexico, I believe... and are also known as Aztec Lily or Jacobean Lily... they have the ability to be cross bred with hippeastrums, and my hope is to accomplish that and harvest viable seed to plant. I'm assuming you have yours growing in the garden? From what I've read about them, they require a dormant period with drier conditions... and they don't always bloom every year, even as adult bulbs. I've included a link to some good cultural information that's more suited to your climate and zone... I hope some of it helps. I just purchased my bulbs recently, and they were already trying to bloom in the packages... I'm lucky to have gotten the two lovely blooms that I had after I potted them! I don't really expect them to bloom next year, but I am hopeful that perhaps my culture will coax them to form buds and flower. Good luck with your Sprekelia! I can tell you that the flowers are something special when seen in person! The red is so saturated and beautiful... and the shape of the flower is very unique! Tom: When I was a freshman in college I took an introductory course in logic, and the first thing the professor said was "post hoc, ergo propter hoc." Funny that I, who never studied Latin in school, should still remember this. The professor began his discussion of logical fallacies with this. Basically the idea is that people commonly ascribe a cause to something that happens before some supposed result, even though there may be no causal connection. This logical fallacy, he explained, causes an incredible amount of grief for mankind. In this case the observed root deformations, and the death of the trees, happened after the wire basket was placed around the root ball. But the does not mean that the wire basket caused the root deformations, or that the root deformations caused the death of the tree. In this case I can think of other things that could have caused, and in my mind, very probably could have caused the root deformations. First, of course, the roots were cut at the same margin where the basket was placed to enclose the root ball. Second, the tree may have been stored for a time in the wire basket before planting, causing the ends of the cut roots to die back from drying out at the surface of the root ball. Third, the roots would, naturally, reverse their direction and begin growing towards he moisture in the interior of the root ball, where there would be more moisture. This may look like the roots were somehow repelled by the wire, but in fact the cause was something else. Finally, the tree could have been planted in a soil that was very different form the soil from which the tree was dug, also affecting the growth of the roots out of the root ball and possibly causing them to grow even more unnaturally. The problem I have with the idea that the wire basket theory of root deformation, is that I canÂt identify anything about the wire that could cause this. Nothing I know about galvanized wire, and nothing I know about roots and how they grow, suggests any possibilities to me. I have not read any of the studies about this issue. I can imagine that any good study would have to control for a number of factors to ensure that what was discovered would be clearly an effect of the wire basket itself, and not other coincident factors.. When I have more time I will try to find out what I can about these studies. Maybe Nate could explain more about the study he cites and how it was designed and the factors that were controlled. I take the observations about the synthetic twine to be a separate issue. --Spruce

That's so cool, ml. I'm sure you have a long list of fantastic stories and memories from the race. What fun ... combined with a lot of work I would think. My husband just earned ASA 101-104 certification in the BVI a couple weeks ago, so we're looking forward to a little sailing this summer and in the BVI next winter with friends who also took the course. We're only experienced in power boating, so this will be a new adventure for us. He's interested in a Hobie Wave or a similar small cat so we can practice right from the beach.

Tomorrow you crack me up! I try to be honest if I don't like something but try to put it gently. "I totally do not like ___ but it does look nice how you did it." Sometimes I totally disagree with the comments and wonder if everyone smoked a little something while looking at the pics. But then I wonder if I am missing something myself and not seeing what everyone else sees. I think when someone is really wanting an opinion we should give it. Johnmari- you crack me up too, but I agree with you too. Sometimes I see a post like you mention. I have had it happen to me too. Not to call anyone on anything but, I needed help with furniture placement in livingroom last year- actually still need help with that. I mentioned nothing in room was staying at all. There is a picture on wall that was simply put there to get it off floor and nail is already there so we used it. I think a few commented on the picture not being in right place on wall and I think there was a question about the sofa that was there too. I just had to laugh and know that no harm was intended and it is really easy to not read the post carefully. That is why I try to see what poster is asking before I comment. I just saw my parents new retirement modular home. It was built in 1988 and wallpaper is in many rooms. The kitchen area has this beige paper with "stripes" of fruit and ribbon going downwards. Some "stripes" are wider than others. It is actually quite nice enough to live with until mom finds what she likes. But she hates it. The masterbed has a floral paper that although it is floral it is not too old ladyish or 80's. They bought a really nice bedroom set and again, looks fine until she changes it. Mom and Dad actually like it. I agreed. Then comes the master bath. Oh my! I swear it reminds me of the Carnation Icecream shop at disneyland for some reason. The cabinets, tub and toilet are light creme and look nice. There is carving on cabinet doors with pink painted inside. The wallpaper is pink stripes. Within some stripes are various pink flowers. It might be somewhat foiled paper. The main pink is standard carnation pink. I think what makes me think of Dland is that I can imagine white iron chairs with that heart shape on them being in the room. It is almost super victorian creepy. My dd and I both immediatly told dad that he lost his mancard the moment he said he liked it. They both actually like it and don't want to change it. I think they need intervention, seriously. We all laughed but dd and I spared them not. We were totally honest with them and at least Mom and Dad laughed with us. I seriously want to sneak in when they are not home. I think I have another reason to survive cancer. I need to survive to change that paper.

Don't worry Bambi....I will send you a paint brush and some Round-Up...if you go out and paint it on each and every weed....you will be able to maintain control....for the next 99 years.....But yes...the TRUTH is...you shall not EVER rid yourself of this terrible problem....Geeee I wonder how or if other gardener's have this problem???? They must not...for it surly has to be only a problem Daylily growers in the "North" have......I guess you will have to ship all but a (FEW) of your Daylilies South...then you can garden like the rest of us up here in the (North)...weed free....LOL LOL

Oh, Bambi, do not worry so much. I have fourteen Southern daylilies that take weeds in stride.

These are planted out in front of our long wooden fence, and ignored for the most part. They are surrounded by weeds of every size and shape. Occasionally they get mowed down by a zealous husband or careless yard workers. I only weed them when I can no longer see them while driving down the road -- maybe 3-4 times a year at the most. Now, that's the TRUTH!

And here's the worst part -- not a single one of them have R-U-S-T. Shhhhh! Do not spread this bit of info around -- it must be kept secret or I could be severely maligned by an errant and angry Northern daylily fancier.

Now this is a thread worth reading....LOL....been outside in the garden...shhhh...don't tell a soul....but I've been weeding. Yep the TRUTH is we southern gardeners have that awful problem too as much as we hate to "admit" it. I guess it's just something we'll all have to learn to live with and just continue fighting it if we want to grow our beloved dl's!!! LOL
Like Rick said, "Thanks Bambi too, for the laughs this morning. You know laughter is the best medicine, even though, it does nothing to help that terrible problem all our dl's seem to suffer from, WEEDS!!!!! :)

Hilarious post. Thanks for the laugh this morning. I think the dandelion digger tool is the best weeder of all for some weeds, but if there are lots in a small area, Roundup and piece of cardboard to protect nearby plants is so quick and satisfying. A thick layer of mulch helps so much too, but every time I plant something and move the soil around, new weed seeds are moved to the top of the soil where they get light and germinate. I know some weeds can lay dormant in the soil for 30+ years, but I think it has to be much longer than that. I think about this when I see some gardeners let weeds grow so long that they set seeds. Weed every day that you go in your yard - not a concentrated effort, but pull a weed occasionally on your way to look at your daylilies.

OHMYGOSH, I'm a borderline state between the dreaded NORTH weeds and the dreaded SOUTH weeds - is there any hope? Which direction do I send my daylilies?

Thank you for stating the TRUTH - way too many people suck up to the weedgawds to keep the TRUTH from all of us until it is too late.

LOL...you folks are all a hoot!!! I'm laughing so hard I'm in danger of falling out of my chair and my cat is looking at me like "Yep, she's finally gone and done it!! Lost her head, the poor dear. And it's all because somebody finally told the TRUTH!!!"
What a way to take a break...between...shhhhh (pulling those dreaded weeds) and cutting back those monstrous shrubs that's about to eat my house!! Thanks again you all, for making my day. :)

OK all you people in the NORTH. What are you complaining about, you don't have to pull any WEEDS all winter. My WEEDS here grow ALL winter then by spring they are as tall as I am. I really would think this is a conspiracy BUT at least I don't have to shovel SNOW that other four letter word. So I'm just not going to complain for NOW!! I could think about it though and come back later.

I figured I'd brighten a few peoples day! The fact is I have been weeding and cleaning the beds for 4 days now and still have a good 3 days work to do. I have been hand weeding, and it's not too bad because I put down new mulch last year. I will go back and spot sray with Roundup when the ones I didn't get all of come back up, and I'll do it again in the fall and put down some more mulch.

I was at Curt Hansons a few weeks back and he told me he busted his behind last fall (like there were alot anyway) and put down a preemergent, I didn't see any weeds anywhere That is what I am hoping for next spring, I think it will be easy then.

I wonder how many of you said "OH S....UGAR, what did he do now!" when you saw this post. I was going to do it last week, but figured it wouldn't be as funny. BTW Ed does know the secret, I hear he has no weeds! I guess that comes with your membership in the secret Brotherhod of the Daylily.

I can't work today, the parts of the garden I need to work in now are under water, and will be for another day or two, which is fine I have 3 orders of new plants in and another coming by UPS later today to pot. I'll post about the wonderful new plants with pics later.

Thank-you so much for this truth telling post. I'm sooooooooooo relieved because........well....... I HAVE WEEDS! I confess, I doooooo. I thought I was a bad daylily Mommy, letting my poor babies have those dreaded 'THINGS' in bed with them. But now that the secret has been told, I somehow feel so much better.

I find this a little mocking and offensive. Especially for people who complain about what others post, isn't there something more positive to contribute than publically insulting a person in a reply (for which an apology was given) and than mocking in a new thread? If you feel certain posts are unhelpful, then just turn the other cheek.

Please step back and consider your writing. Instead of flaming, step back form the headlong rush and try some introspection.

I'll get my sense of humor back when I feel it's not at another person's cost.

Maybe we need a thread on internet etiquette.

Thats ok jakejones, I will not even dignify your post with an answer concerning my true feelings of what went on here in the past week. there are some things that you just can't put here. I doubt that he would call me a liar to my face, and I am not sure I would tolerate it by someone like that either. I know I'm not politically correct, and I really don't care. I was called a liar on a number of occasions, and did not receive any apology, and don't expect one. I will not apologize for this thread either. I'm sorry if you didn't enjoy it.

You wouldn't hide the TRUTH about WEEDS from all the unsuspecting newbies would you?

Why don't YOU step back and consider your posts before you write......I hope you find this very offensive and mocking...Etuquette my butt.....this is as stupid as Godspocket comment about Michelle's "Helpful" post about what she is getting shipped and GG's very straight comment to it. If you can't offer up such a well put post as GG's to Michelles post then why have this forum? Someone does something around here to "HELP" other's and offer their own "True" experience with Daylilies and folk's get flamed....amazing...Yet you post this crap and continue year after year to start your "Rust Crap" and now you get off with junk....yeah right....well JJ you best just ignore my post and it's contents....cause it won't be helpful to you...that is for sure....now turn that cheek....what a joke.

I'm likely to get boos and hisses for this, but the biggest weed I'm dealing with this spring is a DAYLILY! I have a neighbor who has the dreaded ditch lilies on his side of the fence and on my side I have roses and daylilies. Problem is I can't tell what daylilies are mine adn which ones are migrating orange monster daylilies.

My other dreaded weed is creeping charlie. I spent about 4 hours the other day getting rid of all of it I could find besides what is firmly entrenched in the lawn.

My dalily bed in front of the house has no weeds whatsoever, though. Well prepared lasagna beds (4 years of leaves adn clippings) hand-turned, planted and mulched. (this year it will be drip irrigated as well) I pull maybe a dozen box-elder or silver maple seedlings a year, but that has been the extent of my weeding in that particular area.

Its like a war zone in here when that topic comes up! I'm just glad the north hasn't been drafted yet! Thanks for the laugh, this is one war even the north is losing. LOL

Ha, tahtah4now, let me get the ball rolling on the n/s discussions of weeds :D (read sarc/humor).

Being in what I think of as the "middle" but I'm sure is considered northern by the zone, let me comment that I think weeds grow faster in the north because the ones that grow here have adapted themselves to the short season...here they have also adapted to perpetual drought so if they are in an area that receives water they shoot up 6 inches per day (that's no exaggeration!).

Oh my aching bones. I hand pulled three 50gal garbage sacks of weeds yesterday--just the stuff where I either can't till or like grass/dandelions/spring beauty that will spread if they are tilled.

Hoping to prep the veggie bed today and then get back to digging another 3-4 bags of weeds to make room for more that are still expected to arrive. Still have one corner area of waist high grass that I used to mow before the landscape got layed out to make it a flower/shrub bed. Under the grass somewhere are a few perennials against the fence.
