I am delighted for you!

I plant my climbers as close as I can get them to whatever they are climbing so they don't have to l-e-a-n over to climb. It makes securing them much easier too.

Post pictures of their progress and when they eventually cover the fence and bloom.

It is so exciting getting your first rose, but I have to say that the excitement does not die, it continues with each rose.

I feel like I'm a rose newbie too since I've grown very few roses over the years.
This is about to change in a few weeks when my new Austin roses begin to arrive.

Thank you all and trust me this is a start to a new addiction! lol I already have the next one I want picked out for the fall. These two were actually a sort of birthday present as I was told to spend the money on my garden. What a great idea but I already planned on it! lol
The next one I want is another noisette,MAC. I have already picked out the spots for all the roses I want for the next several years! :o)

Meghan....What great looking roses and so big too. I don't do much mail ordering so I had no idea they come so big. What can say "Cottage Garden" more than roses climbing on a fence. I know yours will look beautiful. I love roses but always resisted planting them because in my zone (8) it is so hot and humid and I was afraid of black spot and mildew. I have however succumbed to Knockout Roses. I have three now. Two are in the form of rose trees and the third is one I was able to save from a former nursery site that was being dug up for construction. I love them...no black spot and they are self cleaning so you don't even have to dead head them. They don't come in many colors yet (2 shades of red and a pink) but I'm sure they will soon. They have the look of old fashioned roses and are prolific bloomers. Here are a couple of pictures to tempt you to give Knockout Roses a try. Anyone else tried Knockouts? I've never seen a knockout standard! It's kind of cute!
I have Lamarque, planted a year and a half ago. It is a more mannerly climber so far. She is blooming now as a matter of fact.
Climbing pinkie is on my lust list. I have a little climber which is a polyantha named Jean Lajoy, - they seem somewhat similar in photos I have seen.

Enjoy your roses. I started with a gifted miniature grocery store rose, and from there the addiction spread. I have MANY roses now!!

I plant my roses about 1' from an open fence. I have never planted one on a solid fence. I clip off the back canes if need be (you may not need to) to fan them out. Then I peg them in a fan shape if I can.

Some of my roses came with a single cane. I let them go the first year, the 2nd year I cut them to the quick and let them come back with many new canes. This really helped them look fuller faster, and I could prune and train the soft new canes more easily. You will soon learn what works best for you.
One of the great things about growing roses in the South is that they do grow quickly. If you are not happy with your pruning, you can cut them back and let them start all over again!

Gorgeous new roses! Much nicer than the Austins I bought last year. They're already larger than mine were by the end of the season last year. I'm so excited for you!

Vikki1747, the Knockouts are now available in three shades of pink, the red and a double red...they're coming faster than you think! I'm going to try some this year too. I know several people who have them and love them. I hope they'll do better in my zone that others I have tried...with no luck.

'LaMarque' is such a fantastic looking rose. One of the finest Old Garden Roses. And very low-thorned as well. There is a mature one growing in a nearby garden in my town, and it's the first rose I check on when I go there. Below is a photo I took of its blooms last year.

Meghan, Very wise of you to plan ahead with your choices and locations. Nothing insures success like knowing what will do well and where, in your own garden. Not that I would ever suggest that we shouldn't buy plants that tug at our heart at the moment!

Vikki, I've never seen a knockout standard either! Very pretty! I have 6 knockouts that I purchased three years ago (or is it 4 now???)The red Radrazz and the soft pink Blushing knockouts. They really bloom non stop all season long. I was thinking of trying the yellow one ('Sunshine'??)there is also a Rainbow one that is yellow and pink. I'm amused by the rose snobs that sniff at them with distain. If the knockouts were difficult to grow and were called any name but "ROSE", these same people would be climbing over each other trying to buy these outstanding bloomers. Then there are those who say they are ubiquitous, and so they are, but so are lots of other plants that are wonderful to have in our own yards! OK, that's my rant for the day. lol

Vikkie- You should try noisettess as they are supposed to do really well in hot humid climates. That's why I got Lamarque. I think it was either someone from here or from the OGR forum told me about getting noisettes. I have also read about them in books,Lamarque, infact comes from Charleston,SC so I'm hoping it does really well here. I have somekind of fairy rose I bought from Springhill catalog years ago and though it eventually gets bs every year it has done very nice and is just covered with blooms late spring/summer.
In the ARE catalog it calls The cl.Pinkie an EarthKind rose. Go to there website and check out what they have to say about what they mean by it. It's too long or I would just put it here.

The Cl.Pinkie I got from them is huge infact it has buds. The other is pretty small but from what people on the OGR forum said they had very good things to say from Uncommon rose, however next time I'm ordering from ARE and they are said to have huge roses. I will definetly show pics once they get off to a good start.

I just got my first order from the Uncommon Rose too. I got Indigo, Reinnes de Violettes, and Cardinal de Richelieu. Mine were very nice and healthy as well. My first mail order roses. (The first of many I'm afraid) We just might have to start a cuttings swap in the Cottage Forum! I would love one of La Marque when he gets bigger! I've just recently started rooting cuttings and I have a knack for it. I also got Souvenir de Malmaison yesterday at a great rose nursery here in town. These are my first OGR's, I grow many roses. Austins too. I list all of my roses on my page.

momof2luv2garden -- My goodness, those are large beginners! I can't wait to see the future blooms. How tall will your climbers grow? I'm trying to decide whether to try a climber on our stone chimney.

Vikki1747 -- We have 7 Knock Out along the fence. We totally love them as they bloom here in Chapel Hill, NC from May through Thanksgiving! If it weren't for the deer, I'd have an acre of roses. I'm going to try a standard in a pot this year, so I'm glad to see that you've done that, too.

Ok first of all Kathy, must you rub it in! LOl Actually like you said about putting a dent in your wallet. I would probably get myself in trouble if I lived that close. Still your very lucky to live so close to such a place!!

pacnwgrdgirl- I would would to start a cutting swap. That would be great. You have beautiful gardens!

Cameron- Pinkie is 8-12ft and Lamarque is 12-20ft. Maybe you could try a smaller climber one that grows up to 12ft just to make sure it doesn't swallow up your stone chimney. I think it would be very lovely and very cottagey as well!
