Fruit Punch Poppies

Anyone try the 'Fruit Punch' perennial Poppies listed at Graceful Gardens? I just bought some. About time to add poppies around here. The only perennial poppy I have is one small plant of the common orange type. Those colors on the Fruit Punch look really great to me. I like the idea of a mix of colors. And I have always loved the flowers on poppies. My big complaint with them is that they are so fleeting. Don't even last a week for me. I am hoping these new ones can do better.

I have never ordered from Graceful Gardens before but I know they have a great reputation. I just tried one tray which is mostly the poppies with afew Lupines mixed in.

I think poppies are gorgeous. I would plant and grow poppies if they didn't take the same amount of effort that other perennials do that put on a show for a couple of months if not longer so ditto your big complaint about them being so fleeting. I'm going to stuff my beds with gorgeous perennials that bloom non-stop and thrive on neglect. When I get to the point the garden stops traffic, I might just plant a few poppies. They're incredibly easy to grow from seed via winter sowing. Now of course I'm going to have to Google Fruit Punch Poppies and wipe drool from my chin over what I'm guessing are stunningly vivid colors.

Try some yarrow. Mine is starting blooming now and will bloom until after it freezes, and it comes back.

We had some of that unseasonably warm weather here for a few days and I was also out doing my garden work, but today it is COLD and rainy...and will stay that way all week. I am worried about my daylily plants that are just starting to emerge....I've never had roses starting to leaf out or daylilies popping up in March so I have no idea what effect the below-freezing temps will have on them. It is going down into the twenties tonight and all week. My daffodils, tulips and crocus are up but not yet blooming, just leaves at this point but I don't worry about them as they are used to it being cold. I keep a journal and the earliest my roses have started to leaf out was the second week of April and that was really early for here. I haven't pruned any roses yet even though the forsythias are blooming down the road in town because we will still have below-freezing temps for several more weeks. This is crazy! It was in the 70's or 60's for nearly a week and now my poor plants are up and growing and now it is going to be so cold and snow is possible. I know what you mean about all the work involved in pruning the roses. I have way too many, even though I have down-sized from what I originally had. At one point I had close to 300 but now it's probably half that...but that's still a lot of roses. (And a lot of scratches!) After I get done it looks like I was thrown into a den of tigers...LOL. I can also relate to the pond-cleaning chore. YUK to the sludgy, mushy black sediment from the decomposing leaves that smells horrible! But it is one of the spring chores that must be done. I don't have fish because I don't want to worry about overwintering them but we always have frogs that come in the early spring and stay all summer. You showed great restraint in not ordering daylilies. I am not so strong. I ordered a whole bunch over the winter, mostly lates and very lates....and I have YOU to thank for it. You really led me to temptation with all your pictures...LOL You and I seem to be on the same page about fertilizing as well. I do the RoseTone in late spring too, and then the fish emulsion during the summer. I mulch with shredded leaves but like I said earlier, I am going to leave the whole leaves in the old roses garden this year. All that raking and getting snagged by the thorny canes is a chore I'd rather skip if I can. LOL Celeste

I grow the large Red-Orange Orientals, but also love my annual Shirley Poppies. I just scatter the seed where I want them. They need the cool temps and moisture of Spring to get started. Then they bloom and bloom for me here in Oklahoma where it is hot and dry. I have blooms well into June, but I keep them deadheaded (removing the seedpods) as they make. They like full sun, moist soil (in Spring) but soil that drains and warms up in a sunny location. I have had them growing on a dry hillside that came up as volunteers. I even had them grow out at the family cemetery from flowers I took out there the Spring before! The blooms last two to three days, sometimes longer, but if it is windy, they don't last that long. They are rather delicate, but they make new blooms fast. Plant them thickly and don't thin them or space them. They do better and help support one another. In traditional English cottage gardens, the gardens are protected by high walls, usually rock walls that block or break the fierce northern winds in Spring and help warm up the garden soil, so the more delicate flowers are not as likely to be damaged. Poppies don't need to be fertilized and unless you are having a drought, they don't need to be hand watered once they have come up and become established. California Poppies are much the same. They need the cool & damp in spring to germinate and then they like the dry, rocky, sunny hillsides. The wind damages their petals but planted thickly they protect one another. They will continue to bloom for longer periods in your gardens if you will deadhead them. When temperatures begin to rise, let them go to seed and they will reseed themselves. I cut back my California Poppies and begin watering them again and they come back and re-bloom, even in the summer. I had California poppies all the way to frost last year and we were in a severe drought. Every year or three I have to reseed my poppy beds as birds and ants will carry off the seeds, but it is easy enough to do. I pull out all the spring weeds and then sprinkle in the seeds. Spray the with water to set them into the soil. If you do not get rain once a week, water them with a light spray to keep the soil moist until they germinate. And that's it! Don't cultivate around them. Their roots are too shallow. [Larkspurs are much the same] Last year I planted some Shirley poppies in a new area that was nice and sunny in the spring. All the poppies came up and I was so pleased, but within two weeks the trees leafed out and that site turned out to be shadey. The poor little poppies did not get the full sun they needed and consequently, did not bloom. They have to be in full sun to bloom. The ones that came up volunteers in front of the hot and dry greenhouse however, grew tall and bloomed continuously for weeks and weeks. Shirley poppies grow very splendidly along sunny garden walks (paths), as do California Poppies. They are only good until it gets hot, then go to seed and the plants die. You can collect the seeds or just let them re-seed themselves if they are where you want them to be next year. The Oriental Poppies enjoy a little more moisture and benefit from protection of strong winds. A little afternoon shade in very hot areas is helpful here in Oklahoma. I have mine growing amongst Bearded Irises & Garden Phlox. By the time the poppies are finished, the Irises and Phlox take off and fill in the area, so the dead poppy foliage is hidden and it gets composted back into the garden soil and consumed by all the flowers. Thanks, everyone. The tall bearded iris have bloomed exceptionally well this year. And that one Siberian iris and the rose sort of grew together and look look blooming with each other. Debra, yes snapdragons last all summer here until frost. Of course if there is no rain I have to water them. And the mosdern Sibgerians are quite fancy and the tets usually have much bigger flowers than the dips. Cindy, the one lupine is the only one to bloom there but there are actually four lupine plants in there. The rest all died. So I just bought a flat of snapdragons and stuck them in there fo0r this year to give some color. I did plant Fruit Punch poppies in there in back of those snaps so they will bloom there next year. I have some Fruit Punch in another area and they are blooming now. I am seeing more and more scapes each day so I guess it will be an early season.

Rita, your photos are so enjoyable to look at. You and I are so similiar in how we garden. I also tuck in lily bulbs between my already-crowded daylilies! Like you, I love so many different plants that my yard is a smorgasbord of every imaginable combination all snugly planted. I think if some fancypants gardeners came and looked around they would tell me I have TOO many plants in TOO small an area...Haha. But it works for me, and obviously you as well. I've thought of you lately because I just planted a whole bunch of new late-blooming daylilies. A lot are Olallie cultivars, some Hibbards and others. I bought some late-blooming intros from Christine Weitz of Gladsome Gardens in NY that looked nice and won't mind my cold winters. This fall I won't feel so depressed that the season is over, thanks to you! Your iris bed is my favorite photo of these. Just stunning! Celeste

kay - thanks for taking the time to post the yarrow suggestion & photo. Yours is so pretty!! I have yarrow I grew via winter sowing last year but it's still in a square gallon pot. I'm hesitant to plant it because where I am it spreads like wildfire. Just yesterday I looked at all the new growth in the pot and wondered if I could keep it under control if I grew it in a container instead of planting it in the ground. The gallon pot it's in sat on the ground north side of my house all through our horrible, cold and snowy winter. That says indestructible to me!

Is it a thug where you are? Yours looks as though it's short and I thought they grew to 2 ft. tall?

I have the common yarrow -yellow. Would like to try to grow some red ones. Does it bloom all season for you.Mine got kinda ratty looking in middle of season. Maybe I should have cut it back-would that help???
I also love poppies. GM gave some red peopny seeds. reminds me of Her when I see them.

I have the Pink Yarrow,and pulled up all I could find and threw it away, yting to get rid of it,as it will take over a whole garden.It shoots runners out and just keeps on making more pants.I thought I had got tid of all of it, but seen some more yesterday.I could tolerate it better if it was a bright red, instead of a faded washed out pink...

So my Graceful Gardens order arrived yesterday. I unpacked the plants and left them on my back stoop overnight to rest. I guess I will go plant them now. Seems like there is always something to plant but at least I haven't ordered anything more. I have to figgure how I am going to arrainge them and probably end up moving some daylilies again to make the poppies have enough room.

I really, really did not want to move those daylilies in there around were I wanted poppies so I didn't move them. I just put the poppies in back of them were there was some room around the birdbath. Basicly I squished those poppies into the space that was there instead of being able to spread them out some if the daylilies had not been there in a row along the front. Whatever, it is done.

Ha, you make me laugh at myself. My excuse to myself was that the poppies bloomed early in the spring and I needed to keep the daylilies there for summer color LOL! But really it was just because I couldn't stand the thought of moving all those clumps. I just wanted to plant the poppies and be done with it. I took the easy way LOL!

An update to this thread from last year. Those poppies never bloomed last spring but they are budded up now with these big fat buds so I can't wait to see them bloom. Meanwhile I already had ordered a compleate tray of them from Graceful gardens this spring which are already planted as of last Friday. Really nice plants.

I got so excited by the fact that they are gonna bloom that I went back to Graceful Gardens and ordered three more trays of these Fruit Punch Poppies. I guess I went sorta overboard.

Thanks for the update. Now, feel free to go overboard with pictures of those poppies! I still think their bloom period is absurdly brief which is compensated only partially by the POW factor of the flowers. I have seeds of Laurens Grape I got in a trade and never sowed. Pictures of your Fruit Punch blooms just might give me the urge to sow another winter sown container of seeds.

Rita, Ha! I thought overboard was your middle name. I'm just kidding of course but I had to come back to the Cottage this year, as I do most years, just to see what you are adding to your lovely gardens this year. It's always so much fun to watch you and all of the other cottage gardeners adding more plants and more planting spaces each year. Have a great season!

Oh, they do look fruity. What delicious colors! The purply-black centers make the colors really pop. Thanks for posting them, Rita. We can't grow them here.

They come in a bunch of mixed colors so I know I will be having more colors as more blooms open. I do really, really love them. Finially found the best poppies for me.
