Carla has asked some pertinent questions that really would help you get better advice. One ground cover that I really like this time of year for the incredibly abundant blooms is Campanula portenschlagiana, but again, this as well as most flowering herbaceous ground covers won't really hold up to 3 dogs trampling through it all the time. Vinca minor is also quite colorful when in full bloom, and much less invasive than Vinca major. Both of these are probably best with morning sun or dappled sun anywhere that it gets really hot in summer. You might also consider using some ornamental grasses for their different foliage color, and grasses, sedges and rushes in general can stand up to dogs. Amongst my favorites for color are Stipa arundinacea, Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince', Carex testacea, Uncinia uncinata, Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', to name just a few. Bulbs/corms that can stand up to dogs might include any of the various Watsonia varieties, Wachendorfia if you have cooler conditions and can give it water, or you might consider using other grassy foliaged plants with colorful leaves such as Phormiums, Phormium 'Yellow Wave' or P. 'Cream Delight' are particularly easy and not too big, but the Phormiums have many colorful forms that almost span the rainbow. If you are a fan of orange foliage, (as I am), then look for Libbertia peregrinans.

It's the heat, this has been the first year I've had so many varieties that are 'just now' starting to produce flowers due to heat in the 90's, unheard of temperatures for here especially June which is usually cool and damp. Surprisingly a couple of varieties that didn't blink an eye and kept on trucking were Brita's Foot Long, Grandma Nellie's Mushroom, Blue Jay and the purple runner Aeron Purple Star. In fact Grandma Nellie's are finished as far as eating goes, I have a pole of pods drying down nicely for seed, some already dry. The Brita's and Blue Jay are at the eating stage and the purple runner is flowering again, have eaten them several times, I've also picked a few dried on the vine pods already. I did find one vine that is producing green rather than purple pods, if I had noticed it earlier I would have rouged it out, apparently this can happen and it's best to pull the plant as soon as possible. Everything looks like it's back on track now that it's cooled down a bit, the vines look green and healthy, all we need now is a decent fall to collect seed from these johnny come late-lies. Annette
