thanks for the replies.. the tree bears no fruit -- just flowers. well, no fruit that i know of...perhaps very small berry type if any at all? birds do seem to like the tree photo of tree is in link below. Here is a link that might be useful:

do redbud trees grow in your area? there are some dwarf redbuds in a planting by a shopping center that were installed over 10 years ago by the city. i do not know the cultivar name but have seen one called 'don egoff' online that is similar to these. they are only about 7' tall but may reach 10', based on what i have read. the color is more intense (toward purple) than the taller species and i think they flowered at a slightly different time (don't recall if it was earlier or later than the tall ones). they are eye-catching when in flower but not a standout the rest of the year.

the planting was a tad late.. and it does not have the roots to hold on to 'perfect' leaves ... especially int eh heatwave wait until it dries.. water as you will then go dig a small hole ... and see if you are actually getting any water down into the root zone.. where the tree needs it ... if it sopping wet 6 to 12 inches deep.. then stop watering completely.. until it dries at depth .. a potential problem in clay ... all that said.. just admit to yourself that it is september.. and from now until October ... its all down hill ... and the leaves are going to get worse and worse looking ... until they fall off the tree ... personally i am not concerned about bugs this time of year.. they will all be dead in a month or so .. ken

Commercial sources routinely under state likely long term development of trees. Otherwise the sheet I linked to is from Lake County. The appearance of the young example they show in flower and growth habit drawing they put on the sheet imply more vigorous and vertical growth. If the older one they also show is the original seedling variant - which seems likely - it may not have the horsepower of grafted clones of it being produced using root stocks of full vigor (if such stocks are being used). Production of such combinations goes both ways, it's not just that scions of normally vigorous cultivars can be dwarfed by using weaker growing stocks (as is done with orchard fruit trees). Dwarf variants can also become invigorated by grafting onto seedling or otherwise non-dwarf stocks. This has become evident in the area of commercial production of garden conifers for instance, where grafted stocks of quite small forms may grow so quickly and readily out of character when placed on seedling stocks that nursery signs may give 10 or more year heights that are the same - or even smaller - than the size of the much younger material on display.
