Reine des Violettes (3 pics) - Incredible Frangrance

This rose has incredible fragrance -- and blackspot. I just pick off the black spotted leaves. Looks like 2009 will be a blackspot year if the rain keeps up. There was no BS during last year's drought.

This last pic will let you compare the color to a Knockout and a Pink Knockout in the background.

DH is home from the hospital since yesterday, original problem resolved. Now has a reaction to antibiotic for the sore throat caused by his nasogastic tube. Thank you to all who sent kind messages.

I have that rose, I think. Same color, same form, same BS, wonderful fragrance. I did think mine was a different name tho. Maybe the lady who gave it to me was mistaken.

Let those canes mature..the best time to take cuttings from this sort of rose is after the blooms are spent and the cane hardens up a bit..watch for when the canes are about pencil size..the safest is to air root. Remove some leaves and make a slice down one side-removing a thin layer of bark at a leaf node about an inch long-maybe 1/3 of the bark-leave the rest to support the cane while it roots. You want to get through the green layer to white. Dust the cut area with rooting hormone and wrap a wad of damp peat moss around the cut-wrap that all in plastic wrap and tie at top and bottom..check from time to time to see if it is moist and watch for roots..you can put in a stake to tie it all to for support..dont cut into the stem as roses are too brittle for that. I have rooted Rugosas this way as they are hard to root sometimes. It is very safe with something you dont want to lose...hope it works! patricia

REINE DES VIOLETTES (Hybrid Perpetual, seedling of Pope Pius IX, Mille-Mallet France 1860)is a rose I couldn't live without. She ranks among my top three picks for the most beautiful roses EVER, but does have her "issues". She is very picky about her soil requirements. Grown on her own roots she serves as the canary in the coalmine for chlorosis. Even worst is the extremely poor vigor in alkaline soils. Deeply amending the soil is the solution and works every time. She is also a heavy feeder. You cannot neglect RdV and expect her to grow and bloom well. Disease resistance is better than with modern mauve roses but the foliage is no stranger to black spot. You will have to occasionally spray to control the fungus. Not often, about three times during the growing season is enough for reasonably clean foliage. Because my red clay soil is acidic I didn't have any trouble with leaves turning yellow. Instead my own root RdV never grew much. I blame myself because I got lazy with the weeding and feeding schedules. My solution was to buy her grafted from David Austin Roses Ltd. Grafted she has been a monster rose that is tough as nails, which is how I recommend you grow her. AND YOU MUST GROW HER! Simply put this rose is drop dead gorgeous when in full bloom. The Old Garden Rose flower formation is sheer perfection. The color is a wondrous blend of deep pink shading out to soft purple. THE ENTIRE PLANT IS FRAGRANT! Yep, canes, stems, foliage and flowers have an achingly sweet and spicy perfume. Just handling the foliage will make your hands smell like roses. And the foliage is this lovely shade of blue-green that sets the cool colored blossoms to perfection. She isn't much of a cut flower (short vase life) but as a garden specimen is hard to beat. Grown up a support and allowed to cascade down, and when in full spring flush, she will literally stop traffic. I know because my neighbors comment on this rose every year. Jeri, yes, that would be great to see it grown as a big standard. I've never tried that with a rose before ... may give it a try some time. Terry, yes the teepee is made from three pieces of 8 feet long reebar, stuck into the ground about 1.5 feet. I simply secured it at the top with one of those heavy-duty plastic slip-notch ties, and it's held it secure. Wire could easily be used as well. The main canes of the rose are also attached to the bars with similar slip-notch ties, which are black and hardly noticeable through the foliage. This rose has been a perfect specimen for a teepee. I had thought about trying my Paul Neyron on a similar teepee, but Paul is never full enough or leafy enough to look good. So, I prune PN instead. I used to grow the tea rose, Adam, and thought about trying the reebar teepee approach with him. But I found out quickly that Adam would have overwhelmed the teepee and probably swallowed it whole. Of the roses I've grown, RdV is the one that fits this method nearly perfectly for my garden/climate/soil. I'm sure there are other roses out there too though that would suit it. Randy

that in Graham Stuart Thomas' book on antique roses he specifically mentioned that RDV was in his mind the bluest rose he had ever seen, and that it was notably more "blue" than many of the modern so-called "blue" roses. Obviously since RDV's coloring varies a lot that "blue" only shows up when it's growing in the right soils, however Thomas must have seen it because he wrote that he often wore RDV as a lapel flower to rose functions to remind people that the rose existed and that it could be an unusually "blue" rose.

Wow! what a beautiful rose.

I am glad your DH is home. I am sorry about the reaction. That can be very scary.
The last one I had, I was in the ER for pneumonia, so they were able to treat it right away.

You're growing one of my favorite roses! I had Violettes many years ago when I tried my hand at growing roses in a tiny, sunny circle in my wooded garden at a previous house. Fragrance is right! The lady who grew the daylilies and native plants that I bought talked me into trying the old-fashioned roses.

Nell...this has been a horrible Spring for roses here. Cool, damp endless days with late freezes and frost. Had frost last night. Die back and Canker are the words of the day.

I didn't know he-who-mows was ill, so I'm certainly glad that he is better!

The rose is beautiful and it sure looks like it smells beautiful. I don't think it's possible to look at a rose and not imagine that it smells like anything less but I know some of them do. Strange huh?

I have that rose, but yours puts mine to shame! I will not post a picture of it. It would hang its head in shame.

My roses need something. The leaves aren't a good, deep green.

Nell ~ I also missed reading where your DH was sick. Glad he is home now, sorry he has a reaction though. Hopefully being home will speed along his recovery.

I have wanted Reine des Violettes, because of color, form and fragrance, but didn't get it. I'm also in zone 10 and it says hardy to 9b, so I don't know it if would do well down here or not.

I'll enjoy viewing yours, but sure would love to smell it too.
