Advice needed for backyard. Pics!

Hi!

I have a nice size cottage-type garden in my backyard. There was nothing when I moved in a couple years ago. Last year I added a little blue corner garden and a tropical garden closer to the house. (I know... tropical and cottage aren't exactly in the rule book, but I love them both!)

This year, I'm looking to add a sizable garden with cannas, elephant ears, etc. to the last expansive area in my backyard. There will still be lots of grass though.

That's what I'm looking for advice on. What do I do with the grassy areas? I originally thought of putting stepping stones leading through the gardens. But my grass grows so fast I'm not sure it would look good most of the time.

There will be enough grass that I don't think pulling it all up is feasible this year. I'm not sure I'd really have the money to mulch it all. I just don't want it to look like a bunch of spotty gardens. I don't know... any advice???

How about making grass pathways through the gardens?

Mark out a garden adjacent to an existing garden. Leave a pathway of grass between them, wide enough for the mower. Make a nice edge, and there you are. Leave pathway materials for later, when you are rich, rich, rich!

I really like your gardens. You have done a good job with them.

I am crazy about tropicals, as they grow like crazy here, and I love the cottage thing too, as it reminds me of my Granny's yard. I like all kinds of gardens, really.

The grass stays as walkways! Nothing looks as pretty as wide grassy walks with beautiful cottage garden flowers in the beds. Or striking tropicals in the beds.

I've added a link to one of the photos below. Instead of changing materials, I'd either add more of the same concrete, or have the existing concrete resurfaced if possible to blend with a new pour. Or maybe the new areas could be concrete in smaller sized blocks or stamped with a pattern, but the same color. I'd leave some planting pockets along the fence where the stone is now, so you can put in something to soften and break up the fence. I'd use a privacy fence on the back and side, so you don't have your neighbors ogling you while to relax poolside. Not a "stockade" but a solid board, or one with smallish spaces between the boards. In front of the dwarf Yaupon bushes a Red dwarf Japanese lance leaf Maple. ItÃ¢ÂÂs outer drip line would just about fill that area but would not limit your window view. In front of the Bradford pear two or three dogwood trees in a semi circle. Let them grow all the way down to the ground (ie. donÃ¢ÂÂt prune!!) which would give you a cozy area for a swing. Nothing grows under them. They donÃ¢ÂÂt like heavy objects placed on top of their roots so install bricks/pavers before the trees gets big. Dogwoods do not have leaves in the center of the tree, they are all on the outer surface so once under the canopy itÃ¢ÂÂs like being inside a tent. Maybe remove the pear tree once the dogwoods get largeÃ¢ÂÂ¦.. No droppings to clean upÃ¢ÂÂ¦. Just prune a few branches to give you a Ã¢ÂÂdoorwayÃ¢ÂÂ. If you want to plant climbers such that they grow horizontally instead of vertically you could do something like I did in this picture: I used #9 wire which is very hard to unwind so you may want to use a lighter cable. Note that the drip hose is tied to the wire. 1/4Ã¢ÂÂ drip lines run down to each rose bush. I drilled a 1/2Ã¢ÂÂ hole through the 4x4x5Ã¢ÂÂ post near the top, installed a cap so the wood doesnÃ¢ÂÂt rot out, and sunk them down 2 feet into the ground. I have mine positioned about 16Ã¢ÂÂ from the neighbors fence but 24Ã¢ÂÂ would be better ( didnÃ¢ÂÂt want to reposition my robot lawn mowerÃ¢ÂÂs signal wire). Also, a Wild Flower garden would really give you color. Make it in the form of a tear drop so mowing around it would be easy. There are a few web sites that sell packages of wildflowers for your area. I suggest you only plant annuals which will allow you to plant something different each year. Rather than write a whole bunch, I am going to give you a couple of links to threads where folks asked similar questions. I showed one of my large shrub borders and talked about how I thought about arranging it as well as many of the plants I used. While mine isn't along a fence line, it has a similar function of providing separation from one area to another. I didn't find a whole lot on the web that addressed what I saw in my mind when I wanted to do this, and local nurseries just suggested I put in a line of arborvitae which would look silly in my rural area, so I've added photos that show it in various stages. By now it's been in place 8 growing seasons and I am starting to look at editing it a bit more than I have so far. Mine is a bit taller and wider than your intentions, and it is in a colder zone and a bit sunnier. But many of the same plants will work for you. Feel free to ask questions. Thank you @daninthedirt (USDA 9a, HZ9, CentTX, Sunset z30, Cfa) and @carolb_w_fl_coastal_9b for taking the time to write. Great advice. I've been reading a lot of about Earthboxes and have decided to get a few. They seem ideal for my backyard at the moment. I'm wondering if you can give any advice or suggestions on how to make the space look a little more organized and neater. I wanted remove the orange wooden borders for the current beds you see in the photos, to make more space for the new beds (Earthboxes). There's some soil and gravel, which I should ideally remove? I'm not sure what I can do for edging if I remove the wooden border, which also doesnt serve any purpose. Thanks again

Thanks, everyone! I had kind of thought of just leaving the grass in between but I sometimes second guess myself when I hear about other's grand plans. That would look pretty nice, I guess.

I'm trying to put in as many gardens as I can. Most of my yard is hilly and it's so hard to mow. I have a teeny tiny house but a huge backyard. There is three times this much out of picture range. For now I'm concentrating on the fenced in part. Maybe the rest should be a "Wild and Free Roaming Grass garden." ;-)

By the way - that black foutain? I got it on sale at Kmart at the end of the season one year. Very heavy. Works great. Guess how much? EIGHT DOLLARS!!! :-)

Beautiful. You have certainly done a remarkable job. I would leave grassy walkways too. I really like the look. Can you do a meadow of wild flowers with the larger area we haven't seen? Where are you that you can grow those tropicals? Really very nice. c

I'm in Pittsburgh, which is zone 6. Those are all hardy tropicals. Now I do sometimes lose the banana trees even though they're hardy to my zone. Moisture, most likely. I know others have luck with them to zone 4 though.

The wild flower field idea is a good one. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!
