Questions about Weeping Larix

Hello folks,

Today I went to a nursery that was going out of business. This was a big nursery that supplied much of the landscapers in our area. I found a 5' weeping larix (sorry I can't remember the exact cultivar) for $199 and after talking to the owner, I got him to sell it to me for $90. The tree is in very good shape, no disease, no breaks, beautiful habit and foliage. I'm wondering if I got a good deal. (I'll post photo in a day or two.)

Also, I have read the thread about planting with burlap vs not planting with burlap. But the tree has put out LOTS of young, 4-5" white roots through the burlap. I hate to take the burlap off and risk breaking off the young roots. What do you think about leaving it on in this situation?

Hi Lainey, I'd say you got a great deal, based on your description and what Larix decidua 'Pendula' (?) sell for retail around here. I would plant it with the burlap, since there are roots growing through it and use a scissors to cut off and remove all the burlap from the top of the rootball (down to where the roots start poking out), backfill and mulch. I've done this in similar situations and it has worked well. Dan

L decidua and L kamphera [no time to spell check] ... are said to be mixed up in the trade ...

frankly .. unless you are resin ... you will never know the difference ....

will post pix of mine soon ...

dig hole ..... tip plant on surface.. shred bottom ... best you can while retaining ball integrity ... since roots are already growing thru .. i doubt the ball will fall apart ... do the best you can.. dont worry otherwise ...

tip into hole.. refill and tamp halfway ..... remove as much of the top as you can ... and the sides ... and dont worry ...

do the best you can.. and then.. just dont worry ...

larix are subject to late summer browning .... in high heat... expect such with a recent transplant ...... ignore it as long as you insure proper water at root depth ...

the beauty of browning on Larix is... they will fall off in fall anyway ...

pretty hard to kill this one.. in my estimation ....

w/o the pic from the middle of the street.... i will have to guess ... if you google pix of this thing.. you will see that it has the potential to be about 20 feet wide ... so the basic problem is that it should NOT have been planted.. 3 feet from the sidewalk to the front door and in doing that.. the prior owner.. created a pruning nightmare ... and then did a poor job taking care of it.. and that is why it is unsalvagable ... IMHO .... again.. as i said.. out back.. sure.. play with it.. front door.. you can do better ... also .... IMHO.. its not worth the effort to move it.. at that size ... unless you simply need the exercise ... now.. all that said ... here is what you do.. go to town on it.. practicing your pruning.. see how it reacts ... and see if what you end up with pleases you ... and then in late summer.. or fall.. if you dont like it.. GET RID OF IT ... AND I MEAN REALLY GO TO TOWN ON IT .... none of this half-donkeyed .. i'm afraid to hurt this thing ... i mean take off everything the shoots upwards.... targeting a height that you like.. these thing usually fail.. when they have an owner.. who doesnt want to 'hurt' the darn thing.. and then lets them escape into a form they were never meant to be ... good luck ken

I'm no pro but I'll tell you what I know. This is a very difficult conifer to ship because of its unusual growing habit. It usually arrives at its destination with some broken branches. You purchased yours the same way most of them are sold....with broken branches. An ice storm of any significance will lay a young plant on the ground as trunk girth is not in proportion with its height. I an presently growing one that is 16 ft/4.88m. As trunk girth is still not significant to support its height so I stake it every winter because I don't want to deal with the heavy ice loads that will lay it down. When I determine it has sufficient girth I will end this practice. When you stake, stake loosely so it has freedom to move. This conifer is always under potted and most of them are spindly and ratty looking. As they settle in and begin to grow the changes are very dramatic and they become very beautiful in appearance. I assume you separated and pruned the undesirable roots out to encourage proper root growth as all potted conifers with any size are root bound. If you didn't it will eventually take a tumble usually due to high winds. You made a great purchase. This conifer always attracts a crowd in any garden. Good luck, Dave Dave

My parenrts have Picea Glauca Pendula growing in high shade and little direct sun light. It is not attractive, very thin, stunted growth. A better choice would be one of the weeping cultivars Chamaecyparis Nootkatensis of which there are several. David

Questions on Weeping Tsuga's

I have a couple questions regarding the weeping Hemlocks. I purchased a Tsuga canadensis 'Bennett's Weeping'. It is currently about 3-5 inches tall and about a 6 or 8 inch wide more or less flat top mound. I have been unable to find any info on this plant. Is it the same as the Tsuga can. 'Bennett'? Should this be staked for vert. growth? Does anyone have any pictures of an older one? This was one of the first plants I purchased last year when I started collecting, and am still pretty clueless on the Hemlocks, though I love their look and texture. I also have a Tsuga heterophylla 'Thorson's Weeping' that I just received. I know that this needs to be staked to achieve vert. growth as well. The pic of henk's 'Thorsen's Weeping' in the attached link is beautiful and what I would love to attain some day. I also have the Tsuga canadensis 'Sargenti' The plant is about 24-30" tall, which is as tall as the stake. It is my understanding that I need to continue staking for more vert. growth. How should I go about doing so? Remove the old stake and insert a new taller one? Leave the old stake and add another? What should I use as a stake? How do I avoid damaging the root ball? Any advise on staking of both plants, as well as letting me know if there is a difference between the 'Bennett' and the 'Bennett's Weeping' is appreciated. Thanks. It's good to know my instincts were right. I will do as you suggest. It's a beautiful specimen and I've waited most of my life to get one like this so I don't want to lose it.
