OT Roses since they are doing so well

Thought I would send along a few pics of roses. This is the best they have ever been since we moved here. We are wondering if the drought made them think they were going to die, so they got busy trying to stay alive. Avedon

My favorite rose, the tea rose Devoniensis. Too bad it doesn't do all that well here--the bush is pretty scrawny, but the rose is beautiful and so is the fragrance.

See what I mean about the scrawny bush, but it is loaded with blooms right now. How about that Bloom stalk and there is another on the other side.

This is the lovely polyantha rose Marie Pavie, also with lovely fragrance to match.

Hi Avedon. do not despair of Devoniensis. It supposedly takes eight (8!) years for them to bulk up inot large bushes, but they eventually do. And the blooms are indeed to die for. Maggie's blooms look like WS 2000, but WS 2000 likes to have these very long canes instead of the nice scrubby shape. Beautiful bush, and beautiful bloom coverage. Even my baby Maggie has that nice shape which I really like.

Belindas Dream is a beauty! Another lovely southern rose. Yours is way ahead of mine this year. All the roses in the section with WS2000 at a year old.

All in all I think Devonieies is my favorite of these gorgeous roses. The blooms are achingly beautiful. What a lovely rose!

And who wouldn't love a Texas bluebonnet?

All the roses are really lovely. Expecially Maggie, that one is my favorite. Just look at all the buds still to come on that shrub.

My thoughts are with you Mike! I moved 4 months ago and know EXACTLY what you are going through. Still have not gotten all my boxes unpacked (about 50 more to go!) but I concentrated on the yard first and house later (during the rainy weather) I'm still working on the yard but have the basics done. Your veggies and herbs look very nice! I'm like you - I started gardening with veggies and herbs and roses, then went to annuals, then perennials - with daylilies coming in there and dominating all for a while. (Oh, yeah - I have several bearded irises too - mostly for something to look at in spring, and because at least the deer won't eat THOSE!) I have several 18" raised beds in my (fenced, deer proof) side yard, which were originally meant to be split between most-of-the-year-color (roses, perennials, selected daylily cultivars, heuchera, lantana, violas), daylily seedlings, and my veggies and herbs. For a while, the daylily seedlings took over part of the area meant for veggies, but now I am reclaiming that space for more veggies (more tomatoes and peppers, a pattypan squash (over DH's dead body), more basil, and an attempt at watermelon (to mollify DH, lol). (The daylily seedlings were somewhat problematic in those 18" beds unless I yanked them out right after first bloom - they really dug themselves in well and were a fight to get out. I have almost all of them out now, and am going to have to try something different (probably tree pots - I bought a bunch for that purpose) for the new seedlings.) Back on topic - I don't think I saw any onions in your garden? Last season I grew my first onions - bunching onions (effectively green onions) and let me tell you, they are NOTHING like the ones you can get at the grocery store or even the farmers' market! Pluck those babies and take them straight to the salad bowl - mmm tender and delicious! Best wishes for a productive and delicious season. ;)

OH, I get Annies Catalog but will have to go to her website and look for the tomato seedlings! I did order already from Wild Boar. I never been one to have any patience, I ordered the tomato seeds from Wild Boar Farms that I wanted. I read on their website that tomato seeds are good for ten years so I guess mine will be fine until I start them next spring! I ordered - Black And Brown Boar Red Boar Pink Boar Sweet Carneros Pink Pink Berkley Tie Dye I really have to start seeds next spring as I want to grow these. Plus there is another type of tomatoes that I want to grow and those are The New Dwarfs. I know plants of those will not be available locally so seeds it is. Hello Everyone, Hey Bill, Glad to hear that all is well in Costa!! You all are so lucky to have missed those nasty winds..50 miles isnt that far!!! Lets see some pics of Psycho and Kimi...Those beauties will make the Winter a little easier to deal with!!! All of the inflos that i had are dropping buds everywhere. Hi CHuy, Glad to hear you all are doing alright too! That was a mess out there...so glad no damage! Hi Iso, Glad to see you are doing well!! I know how sad it is to see all of the leaves falling ...glad to know that you still have some blooms! The trees that i left with leaves and are inside in the living room and then some upstais under lights are doing well. The others in the backroom are finally settling down and resting... I cant wait for spring!!! Hey Sun!! Do you live north of Bill? I hope you have some help with your trees... Im having issues with my greenhouse too! Hopefully while i have some time off this winter, i can get it straightened out... it is very frustrating!!! You really got some gorgeous looking roses, course, my favorites are MAGGIE and BELINDA's DREAM. I have two of them, plus a own root one, too.Love it.

Marie Pavie, such a tidy bush, and so charming with its pink buds and paler blossoms. Every bloom on Belinda's Dream is perfectly formed and has opened flawlessly despite the numerous petals. Alas, only to be experienced vicariously by Northern eyes, I suspect.

Thank you for posting these pictures. I just spent some time googling and am getting a rose education, since I had never heard of polyantha roses before. My favorite is Krownprincessen. The blue green foliage sets the white flowers off beautifyully.

You have so much r o o o o m. I always end up cramming everything too close together, since my yard is so small.

Great blooms other than DL's which are my favorite flowers roses come in a close second. I used to have quite a few but then I switched to DL's. Maybe if I ever retire I'll get back into roses because I'll have more time, thats the thought anyway.
