I went today, picked up Lily of the Valley (10 ct.), Astilbe (5 ct.), Daylily (5 ct. crimson, gold, peach mix) and Lily (10 ct. mixed pink, peach, white mix)...all bags feel nice and heavy, and I've had good luck with HD bulbs/roots/tubers in the past. I used one coupon, and my daughter used one as well...the cashier had to call an assistant manager to enter the coupon, since it wouldn't scan. When it was my daughter's turn, the AM said, "You can't use two." I told her it was a separate sale, and if they wouldn't honor it, I wanted the store manager's and the district manager's phone numbers. Amazing--they didn't say another word. I wasn't rude at all, but I am sick and tired of stores telling me a coupon is void/not valid/unacceptable when it is perfectly legitimate. In fact, we're going back tomorrow to get another 4 bags of plants; there is nothing on the coupons which states we can't. The selection at this early point in the season is fabulous! I got a pack of Crocosmia for Hummingbirds, hopefully. Some crocosmia varieties are hardy to zone 4. I'm planning on starting crocosmia bulbs indoors under lights in April to foster possible bloom this year. We'll see how it works out. First time with summer bulbs. The package I got was only labeled as "Red" but they should be fine here in zone 6. Picture on package looks closest to Emberglow. Don't know if HD out by you carries named varieties or just generic color identifications for these Holland imports. Don't know if you're going to pot or plant inground so that will impact variety choice, i.e. either overwinter pots/bulbs/tubers indoors or can leave in ground. I had Acidanthera (Peacock Orchid/Abyssinian Glad... Gladiolus callianthus) last year and they were lovely towards late Summer right through frost. Not the length of bloom time you're looking for but they're lovely as arching accents. Not hardy in either of our zones but I got a package anyway since I liked them so much last year. Ones I dug and stored last year got soft out in unheated garage so guess if I want to overwinter them successfully I'd have to use basement. If I didn't have so much deer decimation I'd have gotten some of the Dahlias. They had varying heights and flower forms. Also saw Anemone mixes and double Tuberose. Good luck finding what you want. I suspect a lot of returned seed is tested for germination rate and if acceptable repackaged and resold, possibly as some discount brand. You notice the seed packages say packed for such and such a year, not that the seeds were produced in that year. The poster that said the companies don't want their seed sold on clearance sale is also probably right, too many gardeners would catch on that most seed properly stored is good for at least a few years, with some exceptions. However some big box stores have their seed racks sitting in an area exposed to the elements and in direct sunlight, that seed might not be good even in the year the package says packed for. I always pick a packet from the back where the sun isn't shining on it directly.
