I like it all, even your "ugly" daffs. Those tulips are going to be gorgeous! It will be fun to see your lilies coming up through the violas.

The other thing I did today when I came in from the garden was that I ordered from High Country Gardens. I ordered three plants of my usual Indigo Spires blue Salvia which I get each year as it is an annual here but so pretty. Then I ordered replacement Hummingbird Mints (Agastache) for the ones that died over the winter. Only afew died but I have to have all my hummingbird mints. I really love them.

I am thinking that tulip row by the daylilies should look so good that I might plant another tulip row directly in back of the daylilies. Then I would have tulips in front and in back :-))

LOL Sorry. but I'm chuckling at your total disgust over those split corona daffs. I am excited to see all those lilies! What colors or names did you get? I love lilies and am trying to plant more of them b/c they're so thin, you can plant with a lot of other things. I like the cheerful bobbing heads of the not-yet-open tulips

I got Oriental Lilies. I got the Oriental Lily Mix which is 25 bulbs and then I order 5 each of Dizzy, Tiger Edition and Muscadet to make up my 40 bulbs planted.

Those not yet open tulips are teasting me with the blush of color on some of them so I know they will start soon.

Maybe the ugly daffs will grow on you,if you leave them in the garden and go look at them every day?I have never seen any like them.Wish them Tulips would stop taking their time and open up.Cant wait to see them,I know they are going to be gorgeous.

Jean- Those daffs have been open at least 4 days and I have been waiting for them to get better looking, ha-ha. Not happening. I do look at them everyday. And I think they are truely ugly everytime I look LOL!

The tulips will probaly start to open in the next few days when we are supposed to get rain.

I think I like your daffs Rita. They look pretty to me!! I wish you would take a close up of one of them so I can see what you think is ugly. Everything else looks great too. It does seem to take forever for the tulips to finally start showing color. I am ready to order me some more bulbs for this fall. You guys all got me hooked last fall and I in turn got my sister and sister in law hooked when they saw them all blooming. lol!!! I do my best!!! Now if you can stand it, go out and get me a close up tomorrow if you have a sec. Judy

I like the split corona daffodils - they are unique for sure and don't look like one would expect a "normal" daffodil to look. I can't tell if you have them interplanted with your daylilies or not? In some ways, I have regretted interplanting them, as the daffodils can quickly overtake big areas. I keep having to dig up clumps of daffs and move them so they won't encroach on the daylilies. Also watch those Orienpets - I hope yours are away from your daylilies. They are gorgeous but they can take over an area too. Your garden is a picture of spring!

Okay, I will try to get a closer view of the ugly daffs tomorrow. But really people must think they are pretty or someone does as otherwise they wouldn't sell them. I must have been adventorous when I ordered them thinking to try something different. Can't think why else I would have ordered them.

I think lots of us egged each other on to get more bulbs last year for this spring.

My fancy orientpets (like Silk Road) are way in the back of my daylilies and also in other areas of the garden.

I don't really have the daffs interplanted but some are in back of certain daylily areas. Those split coronas in the picture are in an TB Iris bed (along with some tulips). I guess that is why they are ugly to me. Daffs are not supposed to look like that. At least not in my mind LOL!

Your garden is just looking great. Pretty sure that double is Golden Ducat, it does just as you say & flop, but the flower is really nice. I like the split corona daffs, I have a few, but they just don't look like a daff, do they? You seem to have a pale color, mine are deep orange & I have a pink.
I can't wait to see all your lilies in bloom. I've been adding lilies gradually to my garden for years, but just the last couple of years learned about the orienpets. I just love those. I may be moving those though if they multiply like that. I have lilies interplanted in my daylilies & iris, mainly because I try to keep them from my species tiger lilies. Some lily disease the tigers carry, & I have a huge stand of those.

That's why I always want spring to come each year so badly, as soon as everything greens up the garden turns unbelievably lovely. Plus you know how it is in spring, there is always something going on in the garden.

Nancy, thank you for the ID on my double daff. I am going to leave it be, even though I remember it flopping on the ground last year also, because I think it is very pretty.

I think this will be a good year for lilies here as they are coming up all over the place with nice strong growth. I put about 12 groupings of extra fancy lilies in last spring and they should look really good this year. You know they take that first year to settle in. Plus afew more just singles or doubles of some more lillies. I do love lillies.

I used to have a big stand of the Oriental lillies out front that these new ones are replacements for. Only the old stand was much larger than what I put in now. It will have to do this way I think as I don't feel it would look good if I extended the lily area over more.

I have Tiger lilies too, old ones been here since I was a child. Were here when my parents bought the house.

I nearly spit out my coffee laughing when I read your heading LOL. Give the daff a chance. Maybe it will get prettier or it will just grow on you.

Is your ugly daff 'Mary Gay Lirette? I have this one, planted last fall and it was very pretty in its first year here. THe center part started out yellow and then gradually turned salmon/pink over a 10 day period. I am lucky in that I live in the same zone as Brent and Becky's farm, so the descriptions are 100% on target. The most outstanding daffodil I've had yet is 'Intrigue'. It had up to 4 bloom stalks per bulb and up to 4 blooms per stalk in the first year. I hope it does well next year too.

I know this is off topic, I should probably go to the lily forum. Has anyone grown any of the double lilies? All my lilies are up & looking really great, extra sturdy & healthy this year. Well, except for the potted one I planted last year, & I was pretty sure it died then. And for Fata Morgana. Fall of 09 I bought it & planted, then the next spring I forgot I had bought it so I bought it again. The ones I planted in the fall bloomed nicely, the spring planted ones just so-so. This spring all that has come up so far is just single leaves. Of course, maybe they are just really late risers. I know that watching all my lilies, I see single leaves come up, I assume from the bulblets, then the flower stalks come up in a week or 2. Maybe that is what is going on here, but everything else is up & many are showing buds.

Nancy- I went out and looked at my lilies after I read your post. I only have one double, Miss Lucy, but I see there is nothing there. Other lilies near it are up (like Silk Road growing like gangbusters) so I don't know whats cooking. It was there last spring but it never bloomed. Maybe its one of these non thrifty types. Maybe doubles are short lived? I don't really know.

Christine- I was just looking at my order list from, last year at Brent and Beckies and I don't see anything I ordered that looks like what I have blooming. Maybe I am just missing it. But Mary Gay Lirette is not something I ordered. Mine didn't change color the way you described, it opened the color it is in my picture. Thank you for comliments on my yard, I keep trying to make it better.

Julia- When I get it in my head that some poor flower is ugly, I just pick on the poor thing mercelessly LOL!

Now, I like it!! Maybe you should get more, since it might be more stunning in a large drift!!!HAHAHA

That's 100 Tulips in that tulip row in that last picture. They are just about ready to start blooming and the other front yard tulip group of 100 mixed Darwin Hybrids are not far behind.

You can see in that tulip picture were I have been busy mulching with the straw. Straw between the daylilies and the roses and on the pathways. I am finished with all 8 bales I bought and will have to go get more before I can get back to mulching. Mulched daylilies in the backyard too but many more daylilies still to go.

I think that at least the split coronas in the Tower Square garden will drift. They will be yanked out and drift right out of my garden, ha.

Rita,You have made me just laugh and laugh over your remarks on your Ugly Daffs.I dont think they are ugly, just different then most.Maybe they dont do good the first year,and next year will be gorgeous.Dont you think thats possible?I have never planted Daffs here,and when we first moved here in 70. the yard was full of plain looking Daffs, but, they not here now.I have no idea where they went.There is only a couple scattered here and there.They look more like a wild kind.Hardly any trumpet in them and very pale yellow.
