Stupid Double Daffs...do I just put them out of my misery??

I planted well over 100 double daffodils and am on my 4th spring with them. The foliage comes up glorious...then buds all aglow.....then freakin' bud blast! I have literally seen ONE flower in four Springs out of these miserable bulbs!

I dug a few up last year just to take a look-see and they are very well rooted, no rot, huge bulbs.

Do I just dig them up and put them out of my misery? All they are to me at this point is something green and raggedy... waiting to dry out so I can cut off the dead foliage and have the yard look good again.

UGH.

Doubles are notorious for this. If they make you mad, dig them up! There are too many gorgeous ones waiting for you to try. (The exercise will work off some of your frustration too. :)

What is bud blast?

I planted 'Precocious' last fall - a db. pink - amazed me with its blooms. Do you use low nitrogen fertilizer? What cultivar did you plant?

I haven't had roses long either, but I think it is fairly easy to see where to prune in the spring. Wait to do it after your last frost which should be around March or April. It is a signal for your rose to start growing again so wait until you are sure it is safe. Now, when you look at your rose this spring you will see brown ends on the canes. That is dead wood, and you will cut all of that out. Make your first cut just below the brown wood into the green part of the cane. If you don't see any green cane then prune down to the soil. If the green cane is all white inside like an apple, it is good wood. If the inside is brown then you need to prune further down. Watch for dark areas on the green canes. That is canker and you need to prune below any canker you see. Once you have finished pruning seal all the cuts with something. I use regular white glue, but you can use carpenter's glue or nail polish. That will keep out borers which would otherwise lay their eggs inside the cut end of the cane. Feel free to stop by the rose forum for more advice. I post there quite often and everyone is very helpful.

You've got it about right, but in case you haven't gotten the cement board yet, Ditra doesn't cost all that much more. Matter of fact, most contractors won't even charge extra to switch from one to the other. As for the thinset under the cement board, it most certainly IS required. Whichever brand you're using-- Hardi, Wonderboard, Durock-- whichever-- go to their website and check the installation instructions. There's a good reason for it, too. THe thinset isn't there to adhere the cement board to the subfloor. That's what the screws are for. It's there to cushion it-- elimintate the paper thin void that would exist otherwise, which would allow vibration between the layers and end up drastically shortening the life of the floor. To answer your question about the 3/4" and Ditra, yes, you could have, so long as this is ceramic and not stone we're talking about.

Definitely switch the DW & trash! Does your island have a prep sink? If not, you will most likely end up prepping next to your sink on the perimeter on the side that's closest to the range/cooktop, regardless of your "plans"...and that's the right side of the sink. Getting the DW out of that area and putting the trash there will make it so much easier to work there! Are you aware that your island is a "barrier island" b/w the sink and the refrigerator? If you plan to use the island for prepping on the sink side, the island becomes an even bigger barrier. Could you swap the ovens and refrigerator? You probably use the refrigerator more than you do the ovens, so having it closer to the Prep & Cooking Zones would be a big help. Plus, switching them puts the landing zone for the refrigerator either near the range or on the island. In it's current location, the island is the only real option. For ovens, I think the island is fine b/c you won't use them as often plus I, at least, find that landing space across from the ovens is more useful than on the side. If you stand in front of the ovens, the island is closer and if you stand on the side (like I often do), the island is handier/easier to use.

I take it you have face frame cabinets from what you describe. I've been planning on doing something similar to a cabinet with double doors and a piece of the frame in between. Here's what I'm planning to do. The center strip in mine is screwed in with 4 pocket screws, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. Use a flash light and try and see what type of head it has before you get started. Get a peice of 3/4" square stock cut it a couple inches less than the height of the opening. Glue and screw it to the side of that center peice so that it's flush with the front. Predrill is a must, countersink is optional but nice. Leave a gap at the top and bottom. Next close the door on the side where you attached the 3/4" piece. Then predrill and screw but don't glue it in. You just want to get the holes in, then remove the screws to the door. Now you want to remove that center piece from the cabinet box. First you want to take a utility knife and score the finish on the top and bottom to keep it from chipping. Maybe the back too. Then unscrew it. If it doesn't come right out, use a thin bladed saw to cut the top and bottom. It might be glued. Might be a good idea here to sand the top and bottom to give you some extra clearance and seal the fresh wood on the top and bottom. Then attach that center piece to the door lining it up with the holes you made previously. Now that cabinet pretty much looks like it did before except when you open the door the center piece comes with it and you have full access. Hi Ademink!

Are these some that spent their first season planted in a wheelbarrow? LOL...just had to ask.

Here is my suspicion...that the temps are heating up so much, so quickly, that it is causing the blast. My suggestion...if they are planted in full sun, move them. My later double ones are in a bed where they are shaded a good bit. I have lots of varieties, both single and double, that bloom just great in the woods....the reason being is that they sprout, grow, and most bloom b4 the leaves start to emerge. Geranium just finished blooming in the woods, and now a poeticus variety is just now pretty well finishing up.

I think the shade of deciduous trees and shrubs is fine, where full shade, like from a building where they would get no sun would be harmful.

What do you think?

Last fall, I planted some large double yellow daffodils, and they are in full bloom right now... and are they gorgeous! They are inter-planted with lots of other spring blooming bulbs, in a bed that gets full sun all day. Before I planted, I amended the clay soil with peat, sand and compost. Other than that, I haven't done anything special to the bed, not even mulch.

I suppose next year will be the test... to see what survives and thrives. My only complaint is that the doubles tend to lean over from the weight of their blooms.

I'm not sure of the variety planted... they were a mixed bag from Lowe's or somewhere of that nature.

ROFL...YES Sue! They are! You're so funny and have such a good memory! It makes me happy to see your post. :)

They are all in full sun - you're absolutely right. I have a large shady area that I can move them to. I should wait until the foliage is dead to move them, right?

iris_gal...not sure what cultivar. They were free from a garden here in town. They plant bulbs every Fall and then after they bloom in the Spring, dig them up and do a summer annual planting...pull those and do mums, etc...

Well I just thought your wheel barrow planting was just the niftiest idea...to save them and get them planted to just survive that winter. I wish I had thought of it when I didn't get some planted fall 2006...they just 'went away' in the heated laundry room.....(bad bulb mommy).

I remember when you posted about planting them in the wheelbarrow. I really did bust out laughing...envisioning it.

Wow...that is so cool that you have access to all those free plants.
