Need Help with I.D.'s for 2 Daylilies

Hi all. I know all the names of my daylilies except these two. They were in the garden already when I moved to this house. I was wondering if anyone might know the names of them? Thank-you!

I tried to I.D. them myself and my guesses are "Baltimore Oriole" for the first and "Crimson Pirate" for the second. As I said though....these are just guesses....I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure?

I'm not an expert on I.D. a daylily but here goes. I was looking thru my Peat & Petit book earlier and when I saw your picture I knew I had seen it or similar before so I looked thru my book again. Any chance that the first one might be Scarlet Orbit by Lee Gates 1984? I don't have a picture but maybe you could look it up on Tinkers database. Marg

Marg, Thank-you so much! I looked it up and you are absolutely right! There is no doubt in my mind that's what it is, "Scarlet Orbit". Thanks again! Now I just have to figure out the second one.........haha

I agree last one is an oak. Check out chestnut, swamp chestnut, and chinkapin oaks... Second-to-last is probably black cherry. I'm thinking the first may be native persimmon, but may need to wait for leaves to mature.

I don't know Pat, "if you plant it, they will come" is working out pretty well for me:) Both in the way of worms and toads, LOL* Cats like to watch the toads and I like to watch the cats heads follow the toads, but if they intially tried to eat one they spit it back out soon enough. I don't think they'd like the sensation of all that jumping around in their stomaches!! Sometimes the younger ones like to chase and hold down one of the larger ones and let it go and so on, but for the most part they just ignore them. Wayne would love to have a pond with fish too, he looks longingly at them, I reminded him that not only would the cats fish but the 120 pound lab would be in there lounging to cool off. He loved going in the creek and the neighbors pond back home. He'd jump in sometimes and catch me unaware, the neighbors thought it was funny, good thing they liked Jackson. Yes, nurseries are like candy stores to me too, so is Michaels:)

Thanks ontnative but those are all to tall. Mine only gets about 15". I did post on the daylily forum to and I got a response that it might be Siloam Virginia Henson. I looked it up but most pictures showed it had white petals. There was one on DavesGarden that showed the same yellow cast to the petals. I had Joan Senior in the holding bed which is clay soil. I moved it to a raised bed with good amended soil and it turned yellowish. I'm going to move it back to the holding bed because I want my white back. I didn't think soil could make such a difference but I have also talked to a daylily grower and she says it happens quite often. Back to my daylily, I believe it may be Siloam Virginia Henson. Hi WG, The pix are visible to me. I'm unfamiliar w/ H. Exotica, never heard of it before, so can't say, but it's a handsome leaf, if I saw some around, I'd buy it myself. The Hoyas 1, 2 & 3 all look to be Carnosa types (yes, some say the blooms smell like Chocolate, mine have never bloomed for me, so can't say for sure). The pot for Hoya 3 is too big, all Hoyas prefer to be potbound & in smallest possible pots (also helps avoid root rot). Also its soil looks very heavy & dense, like maybe it's from the backyard. I'd use some houseplant type soil & add abt 1/3 by volume of perlite (or pumice if you can get it). They'll want bright, indirect light (in nature they climb trees, up into the canopy). That very last pix, is a goner, might as well toss that, it will NOT recover (sorry).

Thank-you Dragonkeep! When you gave me the name I was able to research it and it looks like you are right! I'm glad I came to the Forum as my guesses for both these daylilies were wrong. Thanks again!

I hate to throw sour milk on this, but I don't think the red one is 'Scarlet Orbit'. My SO has a very round eyezone, is a rounder flower and darker red. The other could be 'Sammy Russell', though mine is usually a little darker than yours.

I think you need to know the height of the 2nd one. I have Sammy Russell, & 2 others I bought years ago as Red Magic & Autumn Red. Both Red Magic & Autumn red look so very much alike, & very similar to Sammy Russell, all blooming about the same time. I would not be able to tell the difference from a picture. RM & AU are both much taller than Sammy though, Sammy is 2' or maybe a bit taller, the other 2 are over 3'. There are probably others too, those are just the ones I have :)
Crimson Pirate is deeper dark red than the scarlet of those 3.

Mine is very much the color of Sunny Jay's picture. I agree with ngraham that the height and flower size would be helpful. Mine is about 24-26" and not a big flower by spider standards. I really like it.

The flower in the first picture didn't photograph as dark as it actually is. Ed, you mentioned that yours is a darker red, so is mine, the picture just doesn't show it. In the picture it looks lighter and almost pinkier but in reality it is definitely a darker shade. Also the second one definitely isn't Red Autumn as I have that one as well and it's a darker red for sure. Thanks everyone for trying to figure this out for me! I appreciate it! P.S. When both of them are fully grown this summer and flower I will get out there with the measuring tape and get the height and flower size and maybe that will help. We've had a crappy spring here so far and right now they are both still very small. Our weather hasn't been great......it even snowed here last night a little. Last week it snowed a lot and actually stayed on the ground. Two nights ago we had freezing rain. I am trying to be patient but a little sun and warmth would be nice!
