You are getting lots done in your gardens Rita. I was thinking of buying the alfalfa pellets. I was going to try Agway in Wyandanch. How much do you pay for the 50 lb bag? And what type of seaweed did you spray on as fertilizer? Have you noticed a big difference using the alfalfa?

burwoodbelle - At first I thought the same thing as you, but then I re-read what Rita wrote, she left the bags in the car. So i think they are safe from the critters.

The racoons are plentiful here. They come around each night. But they are not interrested in alfalfa pellets.

I use the Neptunes Brand liquid Seaweed Fertilizer. They also have a fish emulsion fertilizer and one that is a blend of the fish and seaweed.

Most of the agways carry the pellets but you should call and ask, they are often out of stock. Cost $18.99 at my local Agway here in Hicksville.

Yes, both the alfalfa and the Seaweed Fertilizer do amazing things.

Yep, the raccoons dig up any area in which I've used alfalfa. Now I have to put it at the bottom of the holes before I put in the plant. They don't seem to be able to smell it then.

I'm not familiar with using alfalfa pellets. Are these the same as the ones you feed to horses? DO they provide a long term benefit to the plants like compost? I try to avoid noxious chemicals, so this is an appealing choice. Do you just scatter them on top of the soil? My puppy, a 6 month old golden retriever, will probably find them irresistable. But he finds almost everything irresistable.

Yes, I just scatter them around the plants. They start to fall apart as soon as they get wet so if no rain is coming, one might want to water. The alfalfa does not take the place of fertilizer, I still use fertilizer.

Yes, they are sold as horse feed. I get them at my local Agway.

I haven't seen any problems with raccoons either and I use the alfalfa pellets (ones for horses has no salt) here. We get ours from Tractor Supply. I started spreading here about 3 weeks ago when the dls were just starting to come up. I also made some alfalfa tea. I like to use the tea when I transplant the seedlings. Someone on one of the forums talked about it so I thought I would give it a try last year. Worked great. Maybe it was you Rita?

Maybe, who knows. I should go out and put out the alfalfa now, we should be getting rain. I haven't had a chance to do it yet. It is still sitting in the car from the other day when I bought it.

I have been busy in the garden planting sedum plants and lily bulbs. Also dug out three roses, transplanted one of them and gave away the others.

It did rain heavily overnight so I should have put out the Alfalfa yesterday but I didn't. So today its just aweful, raw and cold and damp. But its not raining so I made myself go out and spread the alfalfa today. It should rain some more and I wanted to get this done. The two bags did everything I wanted to do so I guess it was enough. I didn't really need any more. Its mostly the roses and daylilies that get the alfalfa and afew handfuls get tossed on other things here and there.

Like I said before, I just toss them around the plants. Works for me.
