Dawn Redwood Dying
Comments (5)My dawn redwood seems to have also died this spring. It has been in the ground almost 3 years. This spring it put on a healthy quantity of buds and began leafing out on the bottom branches only. Then those leaves died. Bark all looks OK and this tree has had plenty of water from spring rains. Wonder if others are having similar trouble with dawn redwoods this season....See MoreDawn Redwood - Dry or Drown?
Comments (28)I've got a dawn redwood planted in my front yard in South Jersey. It grew 4-5 feet in the first two years. Last year, the ends of the needles started to turn brown. Then every "leaf" on the branch started turning brown and died. I did some research and discovered that it may be causes by something similar to "Sudden Oak Death" syndrome. It's caused by a water mold pathogen. In addition to Oaks, scientists believe it may now be affecting Dawn Redwoods and other trees, as well. You can't overwater Dawn Redwoods. Related to the Bald Cypress, the Dawn Redwood soaks up water like a sponge and loves it. But, this isn't the problem. Dawn Redwoods can get a fungal pathogen that causes the needles to turn brown and eventually the entire branch becomes infected and dies. The fungal spores are spread by water and other affected trees nearby. No chemical on the market seems to kill the pathogen. Scientists suggest cutting the affected branches, removing the tree, etc. that isn't an option for me. I spent a lot of money on my baby and I'm not getting rid of it. I have a feeling the recent wet spring weather we've had here may be the cause. I got a copper based fungicide that I'm going to try. This fungal canker has already killed my two nectarine trees. So there you have it. Sudden Oak Death has destroyed about a million oak trees in California. And, this fungal pathogen I've just described is decimating Redwoods. The disease is called: Botryospheria Dothedia. Or Redwood Canker. As I said, it's a fungal disease. Almost impossible to treat and kill. That's why I'm trying a copper based fungicide spray. Anything is better than watching my dawn redwood slowly croak each day....See MoreDawn Redwood...the chances game once again
Comments (23)dax, I didn't even catch your last comment, lol. The other half was heckling me a few weeks ago about the very same thing. Since posting the tree has put on more growth, not much, but none the less it put some on. Wow, I took this pic from the deck and it looks like a 4' tree. I measured it the other day and its 8' tall. I was mistaken about it being 6'....See MoreIs my dawn redwood dying?
Comments (15)"I should mention it was planted too deep at its previous location so some of the roots seem to be circling the tree" So did you straighten them all out and point them in the proper direction when you moved it? Doesn't look to me like you dug a hole wide enough to do that. If you dug as tiny a hole as possible just to be able to cram in a distressed tree with circling roots and then added fertilizer to that very small volume of soil, then of course it is going to do poorly and probably die. If it was me and I wanted to save it I would 1) dig it out and enlarge the width of the planting hole enough that I could straighten out all of the roots, 2) try and remove some fertilizer infested soil and mix whatever is left really well with that you dig when expanding the hole, 3) replant it making sure it wasn't too deep even after it settles, 4) remove all that grass surrounding it and mulch it properly, 5) build a temporary shade structure out of fence stakes and sheets or whatever else I could rig until it establishes, then 6) hold my breath until next spring which is when you will know whether all this worked or not....See Moreryan_tree
