Yes I know all about Pinus sabiniana 'Digger Pine'

I don't know anything about Pinus strobus 'Digger'. Tag said narrow upright which seems to fit its growing habit.

R&R Nursery conifer. Of course you couldn't contact them if you wanted to. Wholesale only.

Nothing on Google.

ACS... didn't figure...but I tried. Most incomplete conifer data base ever. Nobody is home.

Looks like its been in this 21 gal. container for years and in need of a transplant.

Anybody...any information.

Porterhowse lists a Pinus strobus 'Diggy' and they are in cahoots with R&R.

'Diggy' it is. 'Digger' it was spelled. Easy to do in the trade with so many hands on it as it grows and is then ready for sale.

No wonder I could not access it.

An expensive conifer in the size you see.

Just how rare is it? Anybody growing it?

Doesn't look like the one in hecksgarden.

According to Little (1979 Checklist of U. S. Trees) reflexa is a synonym of strobiformis. According to Perry (1991 Pines of Mexico) the SW white pine of AZ and NM is strobiformis, though he only maps it in extreme SW AZ(and never mentions reflexa). According to Farjon & Styles (1997 Flora Neotropica) reflexa is a variety of flexilis that occurs in Mexico in 3 spots separated by 6 degrees of latitude. In the US it is "In Arizona, New Mexico, and SW Texas (in the United States it is included in P. strobiformis)"; and strobiformis is widespread in Mexico but also in AZ, NM, and TX. These authors speak variously of hybridization, morphometric clines, and possibly both species growing together. In other words, it looks like a great big fuzzball, and if resin thinks that a clear line can be drawn around strobiformis, none of which is in the US, he should cite an authority somewhere out there. It will have to be good however, because strobiformis is pretty solidly entrenched in the US.

I like the color... It still has the open appearance just like my 2' plant. But it's less noticeable and a little fuller since it's so much larger. It may fill in as the years pass. Where is this going anyhow? You said no wider than 4' in 5-7 years, but you didn't include the height. If that plant is 4' tall now, and it grows 6" a year... it should be close to 8' tall in the next 7 years. I'm not sure I would stick that plant in a 4' space next to a house. If you have room for this Pine, a much better selection and one of my all time favorites would be Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst'. You can't beat the 2-3 month show it puts on with the yellow flush. They both pretty much have the same 10 year size estimate (6' x 3'). The problem you have is that your tree is already large and it may fill your space very quick. If you got something smaller, it would take much longer for it to fill in.

The SNA a two hour drive from my place and It's still on my to do list. Spring is the recommended time to visit there. Guessing the bugs get bad by summer. Let me know if you're in the area. We lose many pine trees from insects, the pine bark beetle for one, this seems to be aggravated by dry seasons we have regularly during the summer season which puts the trees under stress which the beetles like. This is a picture of some Pinus strobus at a city park outside of town. You can see the sickly crown needles at the top, possibly pine bud worm. It doesn't always kill the tree outright but can. Once the tree is dead, it usually rots about half way up first, then snaps off in a wind. These trees are on the way out. From what I know from their history, they are over 100 years old, possibly 150.

There is a difference between where a plant grows in the wild, where it has to outcompete other plants, and where a plant can grow when established by humans. White pines have absolutely no problems growing around me, where the natural soil pH is about 7.2. However, in abandoned farmland, there are very few white pines, but a lot of red cedar.

Don Howse has it available. Grafting pot size is $20, 1 gallon is $40. Looks cool- may buy one!

Dave, your one isn't a 'Diggy' for sure.
The true 'Diggy' is showed at Henk's pic, which is a real dense form.
Unfortunately this time I can't help you with it's cultivar name.
Maybe it's a pretty new one to the trade...

Thanks buddy, I sure wish I could grow Cedrus! I guess Larix 'Blue Rabbit' could be an alternative.

Yours looks like the photo I posted which is incorrect according to Edwin.

Heck's is correct.

Dave, today I spoke with Henk (not Heck ;0) )about his 'Diggy' pic which he took at Buchholz a couple of years ago.
He says that that plant was candle pruned which explains it's compact habbit.
Your plant is the right 'Diggy', enjoy it :0)
