This is Picea pungens 'Blue Pearl' The card with it noted that it was found as a sport on 'Fat Albert' I did notice the graft after I depotted it. I've learned a lot reading this forum, by the way. :)

This is the Picea abies 'Dans Dwarf'. This one had a very small rootball. Could it have been grown from seed?

Hmmm -- I guess when they're that small, its sometimes difficult to see much difference: your P.p. 'Blue Pearl' resembles my little Picea sitchensis 'Papoose'

Dan, thanks so much for checking out my pics and the nice compliments. I'm fortunate to have a good pile of rocks out back to choose from. Ok, my DH doesn't think it's all that fortunate, but he's usually game for anything. Creating this rock garden was the hardest thing we've ever attempted, but we're both pleased with what we created. Having someone give such nice compliments really means a lot. I hope to learn as much as I can from everyone here, so that these little guys WILL look like a million bucks in a few years!

I don't have a good close-up of my Papoose, but I did take a few pictures of the rock garden extension I did late last month, and the little graft is just visible at the very top-middle of the first photo.....

I don't know if you can make it out, but there are three dwarf mugo pines planted between the rocks (the ones with the metal tags), and at the near end is a little Abies procera 'Blaue Hexe' graft.

It doesn't look like much right now, but I figure that in about 10 to 15 years, it should be quite nice.
The sempervivums I planted around the rocks should add to the appearance even sooner (that is unless the squirrels manage to pull all of them out first !)

Thanks for the great pics Jaro!!! What a wonderful garden you have! And I adore your dwarf mugo pines. Yes I can see them between the rocks just fine. They are so sweet, aren't they? I don't believe I can grow the mugo pines here in zone 4, or 5 with the new zoning, can I? All of your plantings are beautiful. Oh, I have two semps in my garden also, along with the hens and chick ones. I love anything tiny. OH...wanted to say also that you have the most awsome rocks!!!! I really do love rocks as much as plants. YOurs I am so envious of! My rock garden is so small compared to what yours must be. Only about 9 feet by 7 feet. And surrounded by the rocks, not like yours. I do like yours better actually. We just bought our house last September, so have a lot to do in our yards. Anyhow, thanks again for sharing your garden pics. I really enjoyed looking at them.

Ken, thanks for the lesson. I'm too pooped to try it tonight, so will try tomorrow after the yard work. I added red cedar mulch to the rock garden and the other beds today. Need more mulch! Also lugged a hugh rock to my shade bed. I think I'm getting too old for this kind of work. *~*

Dear Liz,

Unless you hire help, you need TOOLS to move rocks & other heavy things.
I discovered that a wheelbarrow isn't much help, because anything that needs to be put in it has to be lifted first.
So I got myself a nice big hand truck -- the yellow thing in the photos.
But even that doesn't work for when you need to load things in a car.
So I rented that blue gizmo, which is a manually-operated hydraulic lift.
Works greal, and cost me only $20 to rent for a day :O)

Hi Jaro..thanks for the great advice on saving your back. :O) I should have used it today. I used the wheelbarrow instead. Too funny, I laid it on it's side, rolled the rock to it's edge and tipped it in. Well I was bent over with my head right there and when the rock tipped in, the other side of the wheelbarrow bopped me in the head! Not really hard, but enough so that I thought of your hydralic lift thingy while rubbing my noggin.

Anyhow, thanks for posting the pic of your little Papoose. It's adorable! It does resemble mine. Mine still has those little paperish coverings on the tips of it's branches. I'm assuming those are from the new growth? And are supposed to fall off? Some have already. Resisting the urge to take them off myself though. :O)

Thanks Dax! Power tools? Who needs em!? When you have a head as hard as mine, that is! :O) Actually, DH and I have always done things the hard way. Dug whole veggie and flower beds with a butcher knife...several times. With a shovel too of course. But we have moved around a lot! Anyhow, I don't plan on moving ever again...hopfully not anyhow...so the beds we make here are for us, not for half of New York State! The worst part of all those beds left behind are to see them go neglected by new tenents or owners...sigh. But that's ok, I did my best to beautify this town anyhow. LOL!

Well, got everything mulched the last couple days now too! And DH FINALLY built my bridge that's been in a box for two or three years! YAHOO!!! Ya know, that thing had nearly two hundred screws!!! And my DH without a power driver...Uh huh, I hear you guys growning now...heehee.
