The registering of names is more of a International Nomenclature thing than and AHS thing. The AHS just happenes to be the entity that handles Daylily registrations. I suspect you are probably not the only one that this has happened to both times. The job of registar is also a voluntary job, so while problems occur we should be more understanding. Another poit is Gretchen has had some major changes in her life, which are probably more important than Daylilys. Yes it sucks, but things could be worse.

Gretchen resigned her position, which is a paid position btw, around two months ago and has been helping AHS out while they find another registrar. Resumes were due in by April 1.

Please DO contact Rebecca Board with your issues over your registrations. She and members of her committee are trying their best to do what they can to resolve as many issues as possible until we can get a new Registrar on board. We all realize there is a void until a new person can be hired.
With your 2010 intros, as long as you list them on websites with "Name pending," then folks who are purchasing them should realize that the names haven't yet been confirmed. If your second name choice should have to be used, no one should be upset as they know you in good faith have started the registration process.

Do contact Rebecca ASAP!! She is the right person to go to with this problem, NOT the membership chair.

So how about this..Say I have some problems in my life and have hundreds of orders to fill for spring shipment...If I have a tragedy hit me say in March and I'm busy with that for 6 maonths, does that mean that I should't at least email or call everyone and tell them there order is going to be delayed 6 months?? I would think that there would be a hundred people carrying torches ready to burn me at the stake...Because the reality of it is people want the service or products they pay for..Plain and simple, without complications...And just so you know, and many may remember that on March 10th 2006 my oldest son was in a near fatla car wreck and had to be flown out by helicopter to Vanderbilt..I was at his side for a week straight and for the following 6 months to a year he was in rehab..He's fine and has a completely normal like now..Really didn't need to bring all that up but sort of needed to to make my point..Even through all of that, we still managed to get all of our orders out in a timely manner, and let people know with emails and phone calls what had happened and there may be a short delay..We have no hired help, just us, that do all the digging and everthing else that goes along with it..The AHS is much bigger and has resources and money at there disposal(OUR MONEY)to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen..But alas, here we are and it's happenening again. LIke I said in my forst post..It may seem like I'm a insensative jerk,BUT,we all still have responsibilities..The AHS sure seems to have plenty of money(OUR MONEY) to go to this event or a lake tahoe retreat, or whatever...And if your in the good ole boys club then everything is more than likely paid because your asked to speak at it ..I wonder how many of you would order plants from us if we treated you this way???..Then it comes down to if I leave the AHS and just call my plants whatever "Daves Plant X)will people still buy them? Or do they buy plants only because it's registered with thw AHS...I would hate to think that the plants merits have nothing to do with it..But again maybe I'm wrong...

Just as an FYI, the AHS President personally sent e-mails to EVERY club President in every region of the country, telling them that the Registrar had resigned and asking them to get the information out to club members. She also sent e-mails to every hybridizer on the hybridizer's list. (this is the list created from all hybridizers who have nominated for the Awards ballot.) I personally saw both of those letters, telling people that the Registrar had resigned and that should any issues with registration arise, that people should contact the Registration chair until a new person could be hired. These letters were sent w/i a couple weeks after the Registrar resigned. So no one was keeping this a secret! We were in fact trying to let people know what to do if problems arise in the interim.

I also have personally seen at least TWO registration issues - both having to do with names on 2010 registrations, get resolved very quickly by Rebecca and committee w/i the past month. If you sincerely want to resolve your issue, you have been given the name of the person who can help you do that.

Also, as an FYI, none of the AHS Directors gets ONE PENNY of expense money from the AHS!! I repeat, not ONE PENNY. A few directors get part (but not all) of their expenses paid by their regions to travel to their two required meetings each year. My region does not reimburse me ONE PENNY of expenses and I pay my own way to the National meeting, the Fall Board meeting and two Regional meetings each year. I also give many, many hours of my own time to the AHS, just as many dedicated volunteers who I have the pleasure of working with, also do.

So I hope that you will choose to do something to resolve your registration problems by contacting the person who can help you. The AHS is VERY aware of the problems which have gone on in the past with registration. I have personally spoken to many, many hybridizers over this issue in the past and I feel their frustration and pain. We hope to have a new person on the job by sometime in June. The process is underway.

David: I think anyone reading this thread feels the fustration you are going through. Sometimes, we all need to vent a bit but Julie is right in who to contact to get things resolved regarding registrations. Send an email and see what develops. I bet it gets resolved faster than you think :-).

The most recent issue of THE JOURNAL did have the financials for the AHS. I wonder if anyone ever reads it or for that matter even knows what is grouped in under alot of those categories. I know I don't and I read the darn thing several times. ;-).
bambi_too: The registrars salary is listed in the financials.

Julie: I do not recall ever seeing any notification regarding the registrar resigning coming from my club. This is not a negative reflection on my regional President or local club President as I think they both do a good job. I learned about the registrar vacancy from an online E-mail newsletter I got from AHS. So maybe the trickle down effect isn't working in all cases and folks are not always in the "loop".
As for the registration database, lets hope that 2010 is the year all the photos and corrections are in place and 2011 starts a new chapter.

Did all the above..Now more waiting I suppose..At least I found someone in the AHS that didn't treat me like an idiot now...

Hmmm - it seems to me that a good computer program set up on-line along with some "shopping cart" function to arrange for payment would simplify and expedite registration. I wonder why that hasn't been done?

Hybridizers can register their cultivar on line already. But ALL names must first be reviewed and approved and meet with the requirements of the ICNCP rules. You cannot instantly register a daylily and get confirmation immediately because of this name review process. However, right now with our old registrar having quit ( we're in the process of reviewing applications of candidates right now) things have backed up. We want to find someone who can hit the ground running and quickly get things up to speed. Since the registar resigned in Jan. there is a backlog until we can get a new person on the job. We all hate that, but we are confident there are a number of candidates who are extremely capable of getting things back on track quickly.

Forgot to mention this, I don't recall hearing a thing about the old registrar "training" someone new. I think she is just helping with the backlog until a new person can come on board.

REALLY.... no kidding. FOR SURE.. the ahs is more like AARP.. all marketing venue and NO quality. YES.. lots of nice people in there... but the BOTTOM line isn't in the best interest of the daylily.

NO standards... any ugly 'weed' can get 'named'. Any phony "intro" pic can be used.

NAMING.... hard to believe some of those "names" fly.. others rejected... PURELY personal bias in this regard.. IMO.

This ahs is mostly all about unloading the $$ from the naive.

You should really look at the glass as half full once in awhile instead of half empty. I'm sorry but I don't think I have ever seen you post anything positive. I believe you may be one of the most negative people on the planet. I have asked you in other threads to show us your stuff, where are your intros?

You as well as anyone else that has been around for awhile know that not all of the Southern plants preform well in the North, and that not all of the Northern plants do well in the South. Sadly it will probably ALWAYS be that way since many of us are working for plants that do well up here, and they are working on plants that do well down there. You need to get over that fact, or do something about it.

On the subject of names the ICNCP has very specific rules and guidelines that must be followed to avoid confusion. They have been established for many reasons.

About photos, I have NEVER seen a Daylily that bloomed 100% consistantly the same every day. Hot and cold, humidity, lack of rain, rain, and even soil can influence how a bloom looks. I have seen VAST differences in my own garden from day to day. Now If I am going to introduce a plant I want a good photo to represent it. I'm not talking about one that has been tampered with but one that really shows off the plant to it's best advantage. Feel free when you do (if ever) introduce anything to use a photo of the worst bloom to represent it. I literally take thousands of photos each year here and in other gardens, and I have to tell you that getting a good true to life photo of some flowers is very diffcult. I took over 60 photos of CATCHER IN THE EYE before I got 2 that represented the plant well.

If you really want to critique others plants, please feel free, but please keep your negative attitude to yourself, it is only your opinion and your opioion is not shared by every one here. I mentioned that Steve Moldovan told me that promising seedlings need to be evaluated for 5 years and that some new plants take 2 to 3 years to settle in and really preform your responce was "I want plants that produce right out of the box" or something to that effect. Well don't we all! You display the same I WANT IT NOW attitude of the average 3 year old. If I have to wait 2 to 3 years to see a bloom and it's nice, I can wait 2 to 3 more years here to see how it develops, and space is a real problem for me.

Unfortunately they really need to settle on and appoint a new registrar, until that happens your names may not be approved. I am really beginning to think they need more than one person and maybe even a committee to handle the job, so this doesn't happen again. I suspect you are not the only one with problems.

Wait till the end of ma and i think we will have a new one. But i think it will be a while for teh new preson to get things caught up. Michael

I just tired of it all..It's a joke and lots of people know it...There is a very strong movement going on right now, that I'm not involved in personally, that is forming another daylily registering intity outside of the ahs and ICNCP..This is a silent majority but It IS coming..There are hundreds of people that are behind this idea and this should be very good for daylilies in general..That's all I'm going to say about it as I was contacted by them to support it..And I do 100%..
Don't be wasting my time asking who and what because if your contacted by them then you will know.

All it will do is cause a lot of confusion. The same names will be used for different plants, people will purchase them and not get the plants they think they are getting. They will not be recognized internationally. BTW I'm not really interested in who is behind the movement, and what has that got to do with your posting here or not? I really feel bad for anyone in your position, but they cannot make her continue to do the job, and they just can't tell someone, ok you do it now. They probably should have moved faster to find a replacement, and had someone take charge of it temperoraily to keep things moving.

dablaw: There was a message posted on the AHS Email Robin today regarding registrations. I think it was a well written post as to what is happening and how things are proceeding.
It is a large task they have ahead of them and for the person who takes over to get things caught up but they are working on it.
Hope you got your problem resolved.
