Just received my first order

I just received my first ever daylily order, but no instructions on planting.

The fans are hugh and bonus plants too. Much bigger than any of the ones I'm growing or have bought locally.

I believe I remember reading somewhere to put them in water for a period of time before planting.

Should I put mulch in the hole when planting?

Isn't it exciting? I always soak mine overnight, and then plant them. Using potting soil to fill in at least part of the hole seems to get them off to a good start. Congratulations.

Yeah, don't put mulch in the hole. After planting, mulch should go on top of the soil around the plant but not right up against it. Its job is to keep the soil from drying out or changing temperature too quickly.

I used some good potting soil when I planted mine, and they went straight in the ground (no pre-soak) but with plenty of watering.

Another tip that I read in a daylily book but I don't see much in planting instructions: Make sure that the soil around the plant is mounded up higher than the surrounding area, because it will probably settle some over time, and you don't want your plant to be sitting in a pit.

I'm sure there are lots of other good tips out there. From what I've read, various people have different ideas about planting and fertilizing new daylilies, but as long as you don't do anything crazy, they should do fine.

Don't discount the advice of Heirloom out of hand. They've been around a long time and know what they are doing. I've gotten quite a few roses from them over the years, and have followed their advice, with excellent results. Having had horses myself for over 30 years, I have had access to plenty of horse manure so that is what I've used. My mother also gave the same advice when planting. Dig a really big hole, and at the bottom put a generous helping of aged manure (now sometimes the horse manure hasn't been all that aged *g*), then put a layer of potting soil between the manure and the roots as a buffer for baby rose roots. By the time the roots of the plant grow enough to reach the manure, it will be plenty aged and won't be able to burn them. My horses have been alfalfa-fed, so that hasn't been a bad thing for the roses either. Especially as some of the manure I've collected gets mixed in with leftover hay, wood shavings from the stalls, etc. Into the rose holes all of that goes, and my roses have just loved it! My roses from Heirloom, and elsewhere, given this treatment, generally get much bigger than expected, even for my area. I have a Felicitie Parmentier, an alba (which as a class aren't supposed to do well in my zone) from Heirloom (purchased around 1994/1995), and every year she pumps out incredibly fragrant flowers without fail for over a month. I could find her in my garden with my eyes closed her perfume wafts so! I have an enormous damask York and Lancaster which also is a terrific wafter and belts out the flowers. Queen of Denmark is also huge and VERY healthy. All given the manure *at the bottom* of the hole treatment. I'm now at the point where I don't want everything to grow quite so enthusiastically, so in those cases those roses may not get the manure at the bottom of the hole.;) See if there are some stables in your area. They might have lots of extra manure that they'd be more than happy to let you have. Often stables have to *pay* to have it hauled away. Storing/starting seeds

I have had tomato seeds last for 10 years by storing them in the original paper packet. They will easily keep for 2 or 3 years no problem. Some things you just shouldn't save...like Parsnip seed. It just doesn't age well like other seeds. The trick is, unless you have some sort of desiccant in with your seeds, then don't store them in jars or plastic pouches (zip locks). If you are storing them in the fridge or freezer, be forerwarned it is one of the most humid places in your house, and you must take extra care in the storage (though, im not saying cold storage is bad, as it is the BEST for longevity). In my opinion the best way to save seed long term is to plant it. Even if you just plant 1 tomato plant for seed, you will get probably thousands of seeds out of it, and the seed will be fresh for next year (not to mention, now you have extra seed that you can trade off for new varieties!). You also have the added benefit of the genetic manipulation of the plant to be better suited for your particular growing environment! It's a win-win! Best of luck to you! Robert

Butterfly World's selection on site is much more extensive then their online catalog and the plants on site are even bigger and less expensive. You should see their gardens. It's just gorgeous. I was last there in late Feb and would have bought plants and shipped them ahead but temps at home were well below freezing and I was afraid to mail them, even with heat packs. BTW the Passiflora Society International holds meetings there.

Most of us soak them overnight unless we can't get to planting, then they stay in the bucket longer. Put the roots in water but don't put the water over the crowns (where the green starts).

You can replant using plain garden soil or compost or even bagged potting soil. Then mulch them after they are planted. Remember not to plant them too deeply. In fact shallow is better than deep as they don't bloom if planted too deeply.

Dan Hansen posted some of his mother's old daylily information and she said you should not soak them. She said you can put them in damp sand to rehydrate them. I had a few rot out over the winter and I had soaked them all before planting, from here on I will use her method. It's easy to lose track of time and they might soak a little too long, that's probably what happened to mine.

I have them planted out now, but I did put the roots in water until I planted them. Hope they are okay.
Now I just have to be patient. That's going to be hard to do because I really want to see them blooming.
Thanks for all your help. I did mean to say compost instead of mulch, but I just used potting soil around them.

I always soak mine in water overnight, but only the roots. Haven't lost any from crown rot from doing that. Yours should be fine.
