Beautiful. I have never seen lilacs.

Just curious do you pronounce it li- lacks or li-locks?
or Clem-a-tis or cle-mat-is?

Jealous! ;O) I miss them and so wish I could grow them here. My grandparents when I was growing up had a huge purple one next to their house and I loved to drink in the blossoms.

Plantmaven - I can't believe you've never seen li-locks (I also say cle-mat-is) before. I wish you could smell them. There is nothing else like them. The smell instantly takes me back to my childhood.

Glenda, you have officially given me spring fever! You have so many different colors! An old neighbor of mine had a small bush of pale yellow ones and they were by far the most scented of all the lilacs I have known. Maybe you should look for a yellow one next!

My lilacs are just starting to bud out their leaves. I imagine it will be several more weeks before they bloom. I have a humongous lilac bush back by the alley of my new house in town. I have no idea yet what color they are. There is a small tree growing up in the middle of the bush but I'm going to wait until after they bloom to get in there and cut it out. I plan to move some of the outer sprouts and plant them in other areas of my yard. I think there should be lilacs growing under each window of the house so that just for the brief time they are blooming, one can open the windows and fill the house with their scent :)

How pretty, and lucky you to have several varieties.
My Old-fashioned Lilacs are blooming too. In fact, I just came in from taking pictures of them and the whole front yard. Got several pics of the butterflies and Hummer moths on them. My huge yellow Lady Banks is blooming too.

Still no blooms on my white Lilac. What does it need that it isn't getting I wonder? Lovely little bush, but nary a bloom one! Maybe a good dose of wood ashes would do it.

Yellow Lilacs...now that would be so pretty blooming with the lavender ones.

I did the same thing years ago with my huge Lilac clump in the front yard - dug out some of the outer sprouts (suckers) and transplanted them all over the lower property. This year they are all blooming. It is pure heaven to be walking through the gardens right now with the fragrance in the air. It is a very good year for Lilacs.

How beautiful Lilacs and lupines are just two of the cooler weather plants that wouldn't do well here, but I love them. Take a good deep snif for me.

My lilac is blooming too. Kay, you can grow Miss Kim. It's good for our zone. Lowe's has them. :)

They do reach 10' quickly. So that one could be a Miss Kim. It's a Korean lilac.

Oh Glenda - like Memo, mine are just starting to leaf out!! I know I should have done it in the fall, but I was just outside breaking the old blooms off. I love this time of year - something new almost everyday popping out or up!! When I headed off to work late am today, 3 ladies were stopped at the head of the road, foraging for something. Maybe fiddleheads, but I think it is too early, and, I have never seen them in that spot. Also too early for asparagus here. So, I need to stop tomorrow to see where/what they were shovelling! lol!!

I see another one has come up right at the foundation corner of the building the well-house lilac is. No blooms on it yet.

Lilacs are defintely a key part of spring! Ours are just starting to leaf out and the flowerbuds extending. The ones I'd love to have are the ones I remember from childhood. Our elementary school's playground was hedged with lilacs in an intense dark purple. I've never seen them for commercial sale, although I do see them in older parts of town. I keep hoping to find one at the RBG Lilac Dell so I have a name to look for but I haven't seen them there either. Does anyone have then/know the variety name?

We had to take out our old fashioned lilac several years ago due to a tree growing up in it. Had cut the tree out several times but was unable to remove it.

2 years ago we planted a Beauty of Moscow lilac and it has buds on it this year. Can't wait to see it bloom!

Wow, you have lots of lilacs. Mine are showing buds but the lilacs here are not ready to bloom yet. I do so love when they bloom because the scent is just wonderful.

Here's a shot of my Miss Kim. It's still small, just under 3'. But the fragrance is incredible. I can't wait for the peonies around it to start blooming.

I would like to have been there for lilac time. Nothing smells just like lilacs. Lots of good things to sniff in my garden, but no lilacs would ever bloom there, unless we had a mighty cold winter, even worse than this past February.

PM - the second and fourth are pretty close, with the second being closest... Of course, looking back 45 years or so ago, memory is certainly more than a little unreliable so who knows what their color actually was?!

I believe the second lilac is a Russian lilac called...miklov. and the Fourth one is called 'Sarah Sands'. I haven't looked recently for any because I just don't have enough sun for any more. I planted a new one a few years ago to replace a group of them that I had which were always getting mildew. But I bought a white one that I've never had before. It's called 'Avalanche' and has really large blooms, but it's not as fragrant and I really miss the purple.
