Seeds I'm thinking for overplanting the lily garden.

For this year I was thinking about what to plant over the lily bulbs for fill as well as for hiding some of the foliage. There will be two different packets and I'm thinking of getting two of each... don't know if I'll need them though as it states there are 10,000 seeds in each packet and I only have about 300 sq ft to plant.

I'd like some advice on the plants included in these packets as they'll be planted in front of my house that gets full morning sun (until about 11am - noon) so I'm hoping that they'll get enough sunlight being a full sun mixture.

Here's the contents of the first packet:

Nasturtium, red, orange

Dame's Rocket, lilac

Chinese Forget-me-Not, blue

Morning Glory, blue

Cosmos, pink, white, red

Purple Coneflower, pink

Crimson Clover, red

Wild Lupine, blue

Red Poppy, red, pink, white

Rose Mallow, pink

Baby Snapdragon, multicolored

Baby's Breath, (Gyp. elegans) white

Lemon Mint, pink

Scarlet Sage, red

Black-Eyed Susan, gold/brown

None-so-Pretty, pink

Here's the contents of the second packet:

Includes both pink and orange cosmos, multicolored cornflower, larkspur, dwarf sunflower, forget-me-not, white stock, blue lupine, calendula, coreopsis, blue flax, red drummond phlox, African daisy, baby snapdragon, clasping coneflower and black-eyed susan.

Those both like sun but they also offer a shade mixture which I might get instead. It includes:

Chinese Forget-Me-Not, blue

Baby's Breath (Gyp. elegans), white

Multicolored cornflower, blue, pink, wht

Siberian Wallflower, orange

Dame's Rocket, lilac

Rose Mallow, pink/white

Four O'Clock, red, white, yellow

Gloriosa Daisy, gold/dark red

Evening Primrose, yellow

Chinese Houses, purple/white

Lanceleaf Coreopsis, yellow

Sweet William, multicolored

Foxglove, purple

Purple Echinacea, pink

California Poppy, gold

Baby Snapdragon, multicolored

Scarlet Flax, red

Baby Blue Eyes, light blue

Red Poppy, red, pink, white

None-so-Pretty, magenta

So what do y'all suggest? Go with one each of the first two and risk them not thriving due to not enough sunlight? Or go for the shade mixture listed last and get two of those?

That first packet listed lemon mint. I had to dig out a huge clump of it and it is tenacious, so I don't know about that.

The perennials won't bloom the first or maybe even the second year,so you'll be waiting on those. You're direct seeding? Are the seeds to individual plants labeled or all mixed together. That's alot of seed and like kitten mentioned there looks to be some plants that will spread once established. And the morning glory vine? What kind of morning glory? I hope it's not Grandpa Ott (!).

Terrene, got bad news for you, you're a gonner. Those seeds are going to germinate and you sure don't want them to start now. You will start to see your sprouts,probably in the beginning of April. that's assuming they aren't under a couple of feet of snow. First you will see only one or 2 containers with sprouts, then a few more at a time, and then, oops, they are germinating, in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening every day. If you have any doubts about those seeds turning into seedlings and plants, just remember my plant swaps and all those containers in the back yard, all the seedlings potted up to give away. Everyone of them where from wintersowing. And guess what? All those containers are piling up out back again. So just bring along all your extra "off spring" to the swap this year. I don't count the plants, but I can tell you the size of the blocks I plant. For 6 people, I find that two or three 3'x8' blocks of bush beans -- each a different variety -- planted at a 4-6" spacing will provide 1-2 meals per week for the 4-6 week harvest period with enough for raw snacking by the handful and, perhaps, a little left over at the height of harvest for freezing. About 20 feet of State Half-Runners planted in a wide row on each side of a 2ft fence (5-6 total rows with beans spaced at 4 inches and rows at 6 inches), provided about two cooked meals per week and plenty of raw snacking with a bit left over to freeze again through its harvest period. I don't know how long that would have continued because it was cut short by frost. I'm not too familiar with regular pole beans, but 10 feet of yardlong beans last year gave us a month of meals 1-2 times/week and 2 gallon freezer bags. Yields will vary depending on variety and conditions and number of meals will vary based on how much you like beans and how many vanish after picking as raw snacks.

Well, a rainy day and time to get back to the forum. Thanks for the encouragement, all. Hi Mabel. West Paris is a pretty friendly place, judging from all the folk who stop by to talk gardening or strangers who see me in the General Store and comment on the garden. (I do spend a lot of time out there and the garden is right on the road so the "new guy with the garden that moved in over at Mrs. L's house" has become a topic of conversation around town, I'm told.) Thought I'd take a couple of minutes and post some pictures that I posted earlier on another forum I participate in. The garden is progressing pretty well and I'm generally happy with what got done this first year thought there is a whole lot of room for improvement and better planning. (I do tend to be overly critical of my own work, although too forgiving of other's. A bad trait for an engineering manager, I suppose, but that's me, I guess.) I did manage to get most of the weeds in check these past couple of weeks, so that's something to crow about. I centered the garden between two Red Maples and around the enormous lilac that falls dead center between them. Here's some views taken a few weeks ago: The west side: Finished the fence and only a little of that soil is still unplanted. Fall crops like kale and late snap peas will go there. One of the broccoli beds: (harvesting every day now!) And the east side: Following is a picture of the lilac that is at the core of the garden, taken earlier in the season. As I worked on the east side of the garden, the first half I focused on, the breeze from the west made the scent a constant fixture. I'd like to eventually cut it back to about 2/3rds its current size to make it a little less overwhelming and a little less shade-casting. This is where the main gate on the road-side will be. I still haven't gotten around to building a proper garden gate, but that is on top of my (ever-growing) wish-list. Wayne

Are you buying wildflower mixes? Most places that off them have an annual wildflower mix that blooms the first year. Take a look at the Speciality mixes here.

I'm greatful that y'all are letting me know what might be invasive or not as that is VERY important to me. I was going to purchase those through the American Meadows website and after reading up on various plants I was leaning very much towards the shade mixture I posted last. I might even go with an annual mix which would probably serve my needs a little better than one that has perennials that I have to wait for.
