When to remove upper part of rootsock

Could you help me with this please. What is the correct time to remove upper part of rootstock abowe the scion. Should i do it now with the graft in the picture?

with all the plants behind.. i cant tell the scion.. from the undrestock .. from the stuff behind ...

but there isnt enough there to worry about cutting it off.. prior to fall.. for sure ..

I think it is do-it-yourself-able without too much trouble. I would watch this video, then order this part, then watch the video again when the parts arrive. Pay close attention to the directional cogs on the upper agitator when you remove the retainer so that you know how to insert the new ones. Make sure you have the 7/16 socket and ratchet. You may need an extension to get down to the retaining bolt. The kit is only 12 bucks, so it is definitely worth it for you to repair it yourself. Or at least give it a shot before calling in the pros from Dover. One thing I like to do when I am pulling unfamiliar equipment apart is to shoot some pics with my cellphone so that I can remember how to put it all back together again.

"How do you/what do you use to "tear them out"? " Ti minimize any damage to the rest of the window a often just drive a sharpened old screwdriver into the side of them, then lever against some wood to protect the rest of the window frame. They sometimes come out in mostly one piece, but more often they simply break up. A cats paw, vise grips, and some wood to protect the rest of the window and you can pull nails one by one without damaging anything else. Clamp the vice grips on the nail, then pad the window and pry against the vice grips to pull the nail. Not damaging anything else is the goal.

Ok. I feel I should clarify somethings, as I posted earlier about my cabinets without doors, and I agree that seldom used items sitting in the cabinets above my fridge, and to a lesser extent the stove, get a little filmy after time - and that is why I replaced the never-used fridge items with 4 early 1950's empty canisters....BUT I hadn't been up there in a year, and even if there were doors, contents would have been filmy. I Don't have much of an issue with other open upper cabinets. -------- I think a lot may have to do with how one cooks. A lot of frying or sauteing? I would NEVER have them open. I also live alone, and eat a lot of soups and salads, microwaved vegetables and so forth. I don't have a whole lot on display, on the open upper shelves - only a few larger not often used pieces, as I'm pretty short, but it's easy to take those few items down to wipe them now and then. I used to have to rinse out seldom used pieces when I HAD doors.

If you can't remove the cabinet from the wall, I would consider cutting the side off just below the shelf. It is a bit tricky but it can be done. I would mark a straight line using a level or square, and then place a piece of painter's tape along the top of the line (the bottom edge of the tape is where I would cut). Next I would slowly, and I mean slowly, cut the line with a jig saw (new blade of course). When you get close to the wall you will have to stop and use a hand saw(a japanese style one would work best due to its small size). If life is treating you kindly, you may be able to just sand the bottom of the cut edge, prime, and paint it. However, if you have a jagged edge, or want a more finished look, you may need to pick-up some trim to cover the edges. According to your DIY skills and tools, you could just cover the shelf with a wider trim and or you could wrap the trim across the front of the shelf, bump it out around the front column, then wrap it on around the side. I played with your pictures to give you an idea of what I mean. The first one just has the right side cut off and a trim piece on the shelf. The second picture has both sides cut off (if you can do one you should be able to do both) and a trim piece on the shelf. BTW, if you can take them it off the wall I would still use the same tools and cutting process. Hope this helps, Nancy

No rush ever. That scion's size indicates after the needles have fully expanded that it will have enough mass to support the roots, but as Sam says, wait. Typically what I do is cut them off in mid-summer, end of June or during July, here.

If there isn't enough mass-proportionally to the roots- wait until you feel there is. For the smaller stuff, you may wait 3 and 4 and 5 years. Plants like Picea abies 'Wichtel'. Many you'll keep the understock on for for the first and second flush of the scion the following year and then lop it off. It's a proportionality-game.

i am no professional on this ... but let me try to explain .. as simple as i can.. so language does not get in the way ... lol.. hopefully ....

your scion has few needles ...

it needs the needles of the understock ... to feed the roots.. to add vigor to the plant ...

conifers hold their needles.. 1 to 3 years ... the understocks needles will provide vigor during that period ..

if your scion flushes out ... and makes its own needles... i would NOT allow the understock to bud out next spring.. perhaps cutting off the buds in fall ..

but i would leave the rest of the understock there.. for the needles on the trunk ...

by next fall ... 2014 .. it will probably be vigorous enough.. that you could make the final cut ...

there is no hurry to get the feeder needles of the understock off the scion ... but dont let it overgrow the scion ...

make any sense??

Thank you, Ken, for good info! I get the picture now. Understock stays for now but no new growth allowed in it.
You see, this is not familiar situation for me for i have usually saved some foliage for the root maintainence below the scion like you see in picture below. This is unpopular among conifer entusiasts becauce plant will not look so good in early stage. But it suits me nicely for it allowes the scion to start its growth higher, abowe all the weeds that populate my garden. In the picture snakespruce, original tree is from Oulainen, Finland.

part of the equation... is how small/tiny the scion is ...

some who do the MINIs .. leave them on for an extended period ...

as i said ... i do NOT do grafting.. but for one time ... so i am sure.. there are other ways.. ideas ....

i am just enabling you... lol
